A frame from SCP-XXXX-1, containing no cognitohazard

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX-2 installations are to be kept in working order by stationed Foundation operatives. Attempts to neutralize SCP-XXXX must not be carried out without the permission of the O5 Council. Personnel attempting to interfere with SCP-XXXX-3 mechanisms without O5 permission are to be terminated without warning.

With the assistance of the FCC, TV broadcasting is to be switched to digital encoding rendering SCP-XXXX obsolete

ADDENDUM 04/08/2009: SCP-XXXX-3 broadcasts via anomalous means. Regardless of broadcast encoding method, SCP-XXXX-1 will display on screens within the transmission radius of SCP-XXXX-3.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous system designed to broadcast a video containing a suicide-inducing cognitohazard (Designated SCP-XXXX-1) across the continental United States in the event of an invasion.
SCP-XXXX-2 installations are transmitters located across the United States, positioned so as to provide complete coverage even in the event of the destruction of multiple transmitters. SCP-XXXX-3 mechanisms are responsible for the broadcasting of SCP-XXXX-1. Interference with an SCP-XXXX-3 instance will result in the activation of it and all other SCP-XXXX-3 instances, resulting in a 60 second countdown before the broadcast of SCP-XXXX-1 which can be stopped by reverting the interference. SCP-XXXX-3 instances are sentient, however, all attempts to convince them to deactivate have failed.

Discovery: SCP-XXXX was discovered in 2002 after SCP-XXXX-2-153 malfunctioned due to a lack of maintenance and activated, resulting in the deaths of all inhabitants of the town of ██████████, NM, by suicide. Initial discovery was made by a delivery driver, who phoned 911. After being flagged by Foundation call monitoring software, his call was redirected to a Foundation agent. Following the call, agents were sent to his location to administer him amnestics.

Interviewed: Thomas J████, UPS delivery driver.

Interviewer: Foundation Agent Sean Morgan.

Foreword: Transcript of a call between Thomas J████ and Foundation Agent Sean Morgan, following the former being redirected.

<Begin Log, 10:21, 02/04/2002 >

Agent Morgan: Mr J████, your call has been redirected. The 911 operators decided the sort of case you were describing would be more suited to our agency.

Thomas J████: So you're the cult unit? Cause I'm telling you, what I saw looked like some kind of cult shit. It looked like some kind of Heaven's Gate shit-

Agent Morgan: Mr J████, please calmly explain what happened and what you saw there. Try to relax, take deep breaths.

Thomas J████: [Breathes out deeply] Okay. So I was making my delivery. That place is well out of the way, so it took me a while to get there. Radio was acting up, so it was a long quiet drive. I got there, and that's when I saw it.

Agent Morgan: What was that, Mr J████?

Thomas J████: Corpses. Everywhere. And it wasn't like it was a massacre… These people were laid down, feet together, face in the air. They'd made themselves presentable. They'd all… They'd all killed themselves. All except the kids. But they'd been laid out nice and proper too.

Agent Morgan: I know this is going to be hard for you, Mr J████, but can you please describe anything else you noticed that seemed particularly abnormal?

Thomas J████: [Angrily] Listen here, buddy. I saw an entire town that had killed themselves and their kids. If you think I was in the fucking frame of mind to notice 'particularly abnormal', you have another thing coming. [Pause. Followed by a deep breath.] Sorry. I'm sorry. I know bursting like that is hardly of any use, and you're not the person I should yell at. I did notice something odd. It sounded like the TV had been left on in every house I walked past. I'm not sure if that'll help.

Agent Morgan: Thank you for your assistance, Mr J████. Our agents will call you to arrange a follow-up interview at a time that will suit you.

<End Log>

Closing Statement: Following this call, Foundation agents were dispatched to Thomas J████'s house to administer him amnestics. Use of a broadcast cognitohazard was suspected.

Following this call, the Foundation scanned for anomalous transmissions in the area and detected a looping broadcast of SCP-XXXX-1. MTF Mu 4 ("Debuggers") was dispatched to investigate and terminate the broadcast.

Subject: Investigation into the source of the SCP-XXXX broadcast

Team Lead: Mu-4-1

Team Members: Mu-4-2, Mu-4-3, Mu-4-4, Mu-4-5

[BEGIN LOG]

Mu-4-1: Recording's started. Everybody, check your mics and radios. Check your weapons too. We don't know what we're walking into here.

Mu-4-2: Check.

Mu-4-3: Check.

Mu-4-4: Check.

Mu-4-5: Check.

Mu-4-1: Command, do you hear us?

COMMAND: We hear you loud and clear.

Mu-4-1: Alright. We're going in. We're dealing with a broadcast cognitohazard, so if you hear a TV, do not approach. You know the drill. Our mission today is to track down the source and shut it down.

Mu-4 enter ██████████

Mu-4-3: This is… creepy.

Mu-4-5: We've dealt with worse. At least here the corpses are in one piece.

Mu-4-3: It's not that. I can deal with mangled bodies and streets coated with gore. I've dealt with that plenty of times. But this, the quietness, it just makes me… uneasy.

Mu-4-5: You'd prefer it if something was actively trying to kill us?

Mu-4-3: A bit. At least we'd know what it was.

Extraneous information removed.

Mu-4-1: Command, we have arrived at the town square. We're in the process of scanning for the source of the signal. From what we saw when we arrived, it looks like everybody in the town is dead.

COMMAND: Received and understood, one. Inform us when you have located the source.

Five minutes pass as the scan is completed.

Mu-4-1: Command, the source of the signal has been discovered. Do we have your permission to investigate?

COMMAND: You have permission to investigate.

Mu-4-1: Understood.

Extraneous information removed.

Mu-4 have arrived outside a building, later classified as SCP-XXXX-2-153.

Mu-4-1: Command, we have arrived outside the source of the signal. Judging by the state of the building, I'd say it's been out of service for a while. We're going in.

Mu-4-2: The door's locked. How should we proceed?

Mu-4-1: Break down the door. Picking the lock would take too long and give whoever's holed up in there a chance to prepare.

The door is broken down. An siren begins to sound.

UNKNOWN VOICE: Intruder alert! Enemy forces are attempting to enter the faculty!

Mu-4-5: <Expletive removed>

Mu-4-1: Keep an eye out. They know we're here now.

Mu-4 enter the building.

Mu-4-1: Power's out. Lamps on.

Mu-4-4: What the hell was that?

Mu-4-1: Calm. What did you see?

Mu-4-4: I saw something move- up there. Points at ceiling.

Mu-4-1 points his flashlight at the indicated location.

Mu-4-1: It's a camera. Whoever's running this place knows exactly where we are.

UNKNOWN VOICE: Enemy forces sighted in the entrance corridor! Attempting identification! Enemy identity unknown!

Mu-4-3: Sir, it might just be me… but that voice sounds mechanical.

Mu-4-1: Noted. Alright. We’re probably dealing with an automated system here. Move in.

Extraneous information removed.

Mu-4 have entered what is later identified as the control room of SCP-XXXX-2-153

UNKNOWN VOICE: Enemy forces in command centre! Condition red! Enemy forces in the command centre!

Mu-4-5: Will that thing just shut up?

UNKNOWN VOICE: I will not shut up, communist pig! I am the last line of defence between American dignity and the Soviet hordes!

Mu-4-1: Get a position on that voice. Deploy the floodlights.

Mu-4 deploy floodlights throughout the room. The room is filled with mainframe computers appearing to date from the late 1970s or early 1980s. Several of these units are heavily damaged due to sections of the roof having collapsed. In the centre of the room is a desk with multiple monitors, CCTV cameras and microphones on it.

UNKNOWN VOICE: I can see you more clearly now. I can see the insignia on you, and I don't recognise it. Are you a friend or are you a foe? That insignia doesn’t match any Soviet design I have stored in my records, but as you can see my records are hardly complete.

Mu-4-1: Who, or what, are you?

UNKNOWN VOICE: I am Unit 153. I was built by… I can’t remember. That part of my memory is gone, corrupted. But I know my purpose.

Mu-4-1: And that purpose is?

Unit 153: To preserve American dignity in the event of a Soviet invasion. No red-blooded American would want to live under the iron fist of the USSR. No true patriot would bring them and their family dishonour by acquiescing to live under Communist rule. And I, and my brethren, were built to ensure patriotism.

Mu-4-1: How precisely were you meant to do that?

Unit 153: Tell me, have you ever heard of something called a cognitohazard? Given that you are still alive, you probably are and came prepared to avoid one. This does suggest that you knew about us in advance, which adds weight to the idea that you are an American, as no Soviet knows about us. In fact, nobody knows about us, really, but I digress. It’s simple, really. In the event of certain conditions being met which would indicate Soviet invasion, we are programmed to broadcast on all frequencies a message that would remind American citizens of their duty to take the final liberty available to them.

Mu-4-5: But what if they didn’t want to die? Aren’t you infringing upon their liberty?

Unit 153: Any citizen who acquiesces to Soviet rule is a traitor to America, and treachery is a crime punishable by death.

Mu-4-1: Don't try to argue with it. It's either too stupid or too clever to fall for a logical problem. It's evident that this right here is the source of the broadcast. Command, what should we do next?

COMMAND: Your work here is done, Mu-4. We'll cut the power to the town before sending in a team to further investigate
