The Hunt

I took a deep breath, the freezing air stinging my lungs as it refreshed my mind.
We'd spent the last ten hours wading through chest high water, rummaging through collapsing buildings, and watching as the daylight gave way to night, ceaselessly searching. It was now ten pm and we were positioned on a roof, waiting for extraction, our target finally secured in a briefcase.
"Well they're taking their sweet fuck'n time ain't they?" Said our Squad Lead, pulling me from my musings, "Not like we're sitting ducks up here…"
She cracked her neck, something she often did when she was starting to get annoyed.
One of my other four squad mates, Bravo, decided to voice his displeasure as well, "Yeah they are, last I checked we were supposed to be gone ten minutes ago. What the hell are they doing?"
Squad Lead shook her head, adjusting her gasmask, "Don't know, but I'm about to call i-"
Static from her radio interrupted her, the all too familiar sound of Command crackling through, "Come in Squad Lead."
"This is Squad Lead, what's the situation?" She responded, perfectly hiding her irritation.
"Communications from the copter sent to-"
A glint pulled me from the conversation, it nearly blinding me as it crossed my sight. Eyes widening in realization, time stopped as the sound of my heart thudded loudly in my ears.
Leaping into action, I tackled both Bravo and Charlie to the ground, them being nearest to me. Before I could shout to Squad Lead a deafening crack resonated across the night air.
She hit the ground with a thud, a quarter-inch hole in the side of her head, blood pooling.
"What the hell was that?! Squad Lead?!"
I crawled over to the fresh corpse, pulling the radio off her vest, "Squad Lead just got sniped, where the fuck is our extraction?!"
"Not coming, the chopper sent to your retrieve you was in all likelihood shot down, as communications have ceased and now this has happened. We'd send another but it's too dangerous given the circumstances. You'll have to get to a safer location before we can pull you out."
I sighed heavily, "Understood Command, will try and get to a safer position. We'll keep you updated, Alpha out."
With Squad Lead dead and me being the second highest ranking member, that meant I was in charge now.
"Bravo, pop smoke, we're getting outta here." I instructed quietly.
He nodded, taking a canister from his vest and puling the pin, gently rolling it across the roof.
Plumes of white smoke began to fill the space with a hiss.
"On my mark," I said, looking at both of them, "we run for the stairs, I'll take point."
As more smoke began to fill the roof, I could hear shouting from below, company was coming.
Hands on my pistol's safety, I gave the command, "Now."
The three of us swiftly, and quietly, moved to the flight of stairs across the roof, staying low till we reached them.
Upon entering the building, the sound of footsteps rang out, and there was a lot of them. Training my weapon at the bottom of the first flight, I disengaged the safety, ready to fire.
Two targets came around the corner and with four shots they hit the floor.
"What the fuck?!" A voice shouted. "
