Viewing a tricorne or "cocked hat" that is similar to SCP-5106 from above.

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5106 is to be kept in a durable, portable secure container on Provisional Containment Site-28, isolated from any organic substances. Should any foreign objects/substances enter the container by any means, the interaction/event is to be reported to the respective researchers with Level 3 security clearance. If the secure container becomes compromised, a new container is to be prepared without delay.

Description: At a glance, SCP-5106 appears to be an inanimate 18th-century apparel item commonly known as a "tricorn" or "cocked hat." The dimensions of the hat allow it to fit the average adult head easily. Despite obvious wear on its surface, the hand-laced leather is not capable of being misshapen. Any attempts from the Foundation so far to bend, stretch, or otherwise manipulate the leather or laces have been unsuccessful. However, the materials are not unharmed by precise cutting instruments.1

The first anomalous trait of SCP-5106 was observed by the Foundation through simple imagery testing. Each "side" of SCP-5106 around the "crown" is entirely identical to the rest in surface detail. Every bump, scratch, and dent is replicated with seemingly 100% accuracy on every side. It is currently unknown what the smallest level of detail replication SCP-5106 is capable of; although, computer imagery observation has proven accurate detail matching down to 1μm. This detail matching also happens in real-time. When one side of SCP-5106 is cut, the same damage is transferred to the other sides seemingly instantaneously. For this reason, the Foundation has only cut the surface of SCP-5106 on one occasion for testing (to preserve the item). This cut was made on the █████ of the ████. Observation through imagery has shown that this damage transfer can happen faster than 1μs.

Figure 1.

There are no particularly useful or dangerous qualities to the anomalous behaviors described above. The most notable anomaly associated with SCP-5106 is the spontaneous generation of a matter manipulation volume below the hat when it comes in contact with any organic substance.2 In the instant that any organic material touches the leather or laces of SCP-5106, an invisible volume affecting organic matter within the shape of a triangular prism with the edges at each tip of the hat extends downward for two meters. The volume is relative to the orientation of the hat (meaning that, if SCP-5106 is flipped over, the volume will generate upward). Please refer to Figure 1 for a visual representation. This volume manipulates all organic material in the following manner:

All organic matter on the side of the volume labeled "L" in Figure 1 will be mirrored completely to the "R" side of the volume over the "Y" axis. This event happens in the moment that the organic substance touches the hat — there is no visible delay.

The most obvious use for SCP-5106, then, would be duplicating existing living things. In theory, this mirroring process would allow for any living thing that is small enough to fit on the left side of SCP-5106's matter manipulation volume to be copied. In three instances, the Foundation tested this theory. The results were failures in all instances. 3
