Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Due to Incident XXXX-A (see Incident Report XXXX-A for details), all SCP-XXXX-1 specimens are to be contained in a secured enclosure on Bio-Research Area-12, and enclosed within a circular area of approximately ten kilometers in diameter with reinforced barricade (see Incident Report SCP-XXXX-A for details). Any SCP-XXXX-1 instance that is found outside the enclosure must be relocated promptly and with caution via land drones. No vertebrate organisms are permitted within SCP-XXXX-1's enclosure. Mounted cameras and at least two Field Agents are to be stationed around the site to survey SCP-XXXX-1 instances.
Any vertebrate organism exposed to an instance of SCP-XXXX is to be promptly terminated. Subjects that come into direct contact with an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 are to be placed under level 4 quarantine for a minimum of seven weeks.
Description: SCP-XXXX refers to the collection of Centruroides sculpturatus (Arizona bark scorpions) and the affected vertebrate organisms1. SCP-XXXX-1 instances are superficially identical to members of the species Centruroides sculpturatus and display similar behaviors. SCP-XXXX-1 instances live in colonies in order to overwhelm larger animals. These instances have an unidentifiable wax-like coating on their exoskeleton to enable them to survive up to 500 degrees Celsius.
The anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX-1 manifest upon direct contact with any vertebrate organism. Upon exposure, vitamins and minerals present within the subject's body begin to undergo a transition into an anomalous form of glucose, designated SCP-XXXX-Rx. After transmutation, the affected vertebrate organism (now referred to as SCP-XXXX-2) begins to exhibit mental and behavioral symptoms, deterioration of mental conscience, as well as develop visual anomalous mutations. The effects of SCP-XXXX-1 fail to manifest in invertebrate species.
The following progression of SCP-XXXX-1's effect has been compiled from the results of individual studies:
- One day after initial exposure: No changes noted.
- Three days after initial exposure: Blood sugar rises in increments, and heart rate slightly increases. Production of insulin, however, declines rapidly.
- One week after initial exposure: Blood sugar spikes dramatically, causing Type 2 Diabetes in the affected animal.
- Two weeks after initial exposure: The organism collapses from cardiac arrest several times throughout the week. The animal does not terminate due to the effects of SCP-XXXX-Rx.
- Three weeks after initial exposure: Myoclonic seizures take place. The affected organism foams at the mouth in unnatural hues, ranging from multiple shades of pink, blue, green, purple, and green.
- Four weeks after initial exposure: The affected organism, now designated as SCP-XXXX-2, resumes normal behavior, with the exception of its abnormally-high level of SCP-XXXX-Rx. The body is no longer able to produce insulin.
- Five weeks after initial exposure: SCP-XXXX-2 develops the need to consume foods with a high level of carbohydrates. All important vitamins and minerals in the body are reconstructed into SCP-XXXX-Rx. The pancreas, instead of producing insulin, now produces the anomalous substance. Visual anomalies manifest, such as multicolored bodily fluids, pigmentation loss, "glistening" in bone matter, and loss of irises. This has been determined that SCP-XXXX-Rx is the cause.
- Six days after initial exposure: SCP-XXXX-2 exhibits mental and behavioral problems. All brain cells have converted into tissue composed of SCP-XXXX-Rx, sending neurons at an accellerated rate. At this stage, direct contact with SCP-XXXX-2 has the same anomalous effect as any SCP-XXXX-1 instance. SCP-XXXX-2 becomes hyperactive, unable to stop moving and unwilling to follow verbal or physical instruction. SCP-XXXX-2 instances persist seemingly indefinitely at this stage, despite the mutations sustained being traditionally incompatible with life.
Discovery: A colony of SCP-XXXX-1 instances was discovered near ██████████, Arizona in the summer of 1983, dwelling inside a felled tree that struck a local resident's home. Residents were in a state of widespread panic due to an apparent outbreak of an unusual strain of rabies. Foundation operatives identified a colony of scorpions as the source of the outbreak and took the organisms into custody.
Addendum: Incident Log XXXX-A
August 12th, 1987:
Fifteen instances of SCP-XXXX-1 were brought in to the Foundation to be analyzed. After placing down the 5 centimeter-thick glass container of SCP-XXXX-1 specimens, Dr. ████████ saw that they had managed to escape by breaking through the thick glass, fleeing at an abnormal speed. They managed to infect three Class-B officers and several Class-D personnel. They were taken into the medical center for treatment and examination. All affected individuals were then relocated to solidary confinement, and all SCP-XXXX-1 specimens were transported back to their place of origin via drone and rover. Thick, reinforced barricade is constructed around the SCP-XXXX-1 enclosure.
