The Wendigo Cult Codex

Special Containment Procedures: To be contained in a shatter-resistant, glass lock-box that is 91.44 cm long by 45.72 cm wide. The key of which is to be passed between Level 5 class staff every month on the full moon. Blue moon months require two changes of hands between staff. Special occasions such as Spring Equinox, Lunar Eclipses, or unusual high tides require constant observation of the key holder. Test subjects are not to come in contact with the key unless about to directly come in contact with the codex. Four (4) security flash-image cameras are to be set in each corner of the room, and to record live footage. Every code entry to enter the chamber is to be recorded in real time.

Description:

The Wendigo Cult Codex is a book that is blood red in color, 30.48 cm long by 15.24 cm wide, with over four-hundred (400) pages made of thick, hand-made paper. The cover has no significant markings, and is overall plain, but the first page reads "Wendigo Cult Codex Volumes 1-5". The ink used on the pages has been found to contain biological components and trace elements of iron. The first chapter exclusively focuses on the legend of the Wendigo, a Native American Cryptid formed by a human becoming a beast due to the consumption of human flesh. Illustrations are hand-inked and extremely detailed, including measurements of adolescent, female, and male Wendigos. Further chapters discuss the quality of human meat required to become a full Wendigo with full control, moderate control, or no control. Further chapters provide recipes and hunting tips, as well as maps of livable Wendigo Temples and Camps (none have ever been discovered, despite many attempts. Most Temples are located in the ███████ Area of ███████████, with camps ranging internationally, but closely surrounding temples) Important areas of the text seem to be in an ancient mixture of languages that we have been unable to translate. Each chapter is signed by a writer, often accompanied by a humanoid-paw print or tooth symbol. It is assumed that each Volume was written by a different Wendigo Prophet, who adds a personal testimony of events to the end of all volumes. There has also been found a record of members, sacrifices, and leaders. The maximum count of Wendigo Cultists was 1,579 members, including children and adolescents. This object is considered safe.

Conducted tests have found that this object is no longer considered safe. While reading and transcribing the texts, Level █ Linguist ███████ became increasingly hungry during their shift. By the end of transcribing ten chapters, they effectively ran to the break room on level ██, ate all meat (raw and cooked). Apparently unable to drive off the hunger, they waited in the room until Level █ Doctor, ████████ entered. Linguist ███████ attacked and consumed Doctor ████████ heart, legs, and began to feast on their arms when the Security team arrived. Additional tests found that the further the Codex is read, the greater the hunger for human flesh becomes. One test subject made it as far as volume 5 before eating their own arm (died from blood-loss). This specific test subject had been sentenced to death for ██████ their victims, so the level of resistance was not unexpected. The quickest decline of sanity was recorded by test subject ██-████, who made it only halfway through chapter 2 before screaming for meat and clawing at their own skin.

Being read aloud the Codex does not effect the listeners unless they have seen the pages with their own eyes. Even reading the title page seems to remove any protection from the lust for human flesh when hearing the texts. While being read aloud the texts has a slower effect, it is still just as powerful once it fully 'infects' the listeners.

Despite no outside sources listing Wendigos being involved with Lunar Cycles, it has been found that full moons lead to less resistance to the effects of the Codex. During the Moon cycles, it has been found that even the Key Holder has felt compelled to look at the Codex unless the key has changed hands. Thus, every Full Moon, the key holder must transfer the key to another personnel who has not had the key during the last 3 months.

As of █/██/████, the recent key-holders that had level ██ access will no longer be allowed to hold and care for the key leading to the Codex case, due to the fatal incident involving Scientist ██████ and Nutritionist ███████. The level of clearance allowed for key possession has now been officially changed to ██ and above.

Special Permissions

Doctor ████████ has submitted a form for human and animal testing. They requested further resources to be able to fully explore the formation and transformation of a human to an acclaimed "Wendigo" and has prepared a presentation for Level ███ Approval. They have requested the use of SCP-604 for a source of human flesh for testing. The form can be accessed upon request, and will be processed fully by █/██/████.
