Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid1
Special Containment Procedures: Conventional containment procedures cannot be used on SCP-XXXX instances at present. The reverse engineering of SCP-XXXX-04 will continue to this end, any results to be used towards Project Greta.2
No subject under the scrutiny of an SCP-XXXX instance is to be informed that they are such until the instance has selected another target of study. Until suitable containment procedures for SCP-XXXX have been developed, no subject of an SCP-XXXX study is to ever be informed of or allowed to discover that they were the subject of SCP-XXXX, nor of the existence of SCP-XXXX itself. In the event of accidental discovery of SCP-XXXX by any of its current or former subjects, the appropriate amnestics are to be employed immediately. The option of termination is still under review. Information on SCP-XXXX is limited to Level 3 Researchers and above, conditional that they were never part of an SCP-XXXX study. Appropriate disciplinary action will be brought against any staff who violate these directive, intentionally or by accident.
Currently, the only working procedures the Foundation has in regards to containing SCP-XXXX instances are to keep them from disappearing. SCP-XXXX instances have displayed no will or ability to cause harm or interfere with Foundation affairs, therefor the anomalies are classified as Euclid despite the Foundation's inability to contain them.
Description: SCP-XXXX consists of a number of hidden artificial constructs that typically hover around 25 meters above their subjects. Each is identical in design, consisting of a central shaft 15.75 meters in length. The lower and of the shaft consists of a cone three meters in length. This array was initially mistakenly called an "emitter," but examination of SCP-XXXX-04 has revealed this to be a combination navigational/targeting array that assists SCP-XXXX in keeping track of its subjects and remaining in alignment. Located on the upper end of the shaft of each instance is a large ellipsoid housing SCP-XXXX's core systems and what is believed to be the main section of its anti-gravity drive. Connected to the upper end of the main housing are six elongated heptagonal panels, 6.5m in length and 3.25m in width at their widest point, near where they connects to SCP-XXXX core housing. Analysis has revealed these panels to be an advanced form of neutrino telescope. The panels will open or close as SCP-XXXX orients itself to remain locked onto its subject.A thin cylinder extends beyond this array. Two rings rotate about the cylinder with no visible connection. Eight small, pentagon shaped reflective panels are fitted onto each of these rings. The rings rotate around the cylinder at a constant rate (two rotations per second) around the cylinder, the lower clockwise, the upper counter-clockwise. Above the "emitter" a series of eleven translucent globes, each of slightly increasing size, connect the emitter to the shaft. Five concentric rings, each flat and 0.35m in width, rotate around the main shaft. Each ring is marked with a thin black stripe along its width (SCP-XXXX's only known aesthetic), and rotates in an alternating clockwise/counterclockwise manner. The rings will also reposition themselves in various positions along the shaft without warning. Both behaviors occur at random.
Every seventeen days exactly each instance of SCP-XXXX will undergo a "Realignment Event." The rings will converge at a point on the shaft directly between the largest globe and the main housing. The rings will rotate until the markings on each connect. After two minutes or alternating rotation cycles, the rings will separate and resume their normal behavior. The significance of this is currently unknown.
SCP-XXXX will occasionally also undergo "Discharge Event." The smallest globe will slowly light up until it reaches 570 lumens. Each globe will then follow successively follow suit. When all globes are at 570 lumens, they will begin to rapidly pulsate along with various lights located throughout SCP-XXXX's frame. These lights cannot be observed outside of an event. The pulsing will last from 3-9 minutes until the device flashes and goes dark, then the cycle repeats. The timing between these events is irregular, with eleven days to fifteen weeks being the normal range. No radiation beyond a burst of visible spectrum light (which also remains shrouded along with the instance) has been detected from these events and their significance is also unknown. Speculation has been offered that this may be a form of degaussing.
Currently there are six active instances. To date a total of nine have been discovered, designated SCP-XXXX-00 through 08. Two instances, XXXX-00 and XXXX-07 vanished upon discovery by their subjects and have not reappeared. SCP-XXXX-04 ceased functioning and was collected for study. No appearance of SCP-XXXX has been observed, all currently known instances have been discovered whilst carrying out their activities.
The devices are undetectable except by radio telescope modified to detect [REDACTED] or SCP-████. They are also unaffected by normal matter (avians and debris carried by high winds have been observed passing through them regularly, with no response from any XXXX instance recorded to date) leading to the belief that SCP-5911 instances are slightly out of phase with normal space. Each instance continually directs its attention towards a selected member Foundation personnel. SCP-XXX select their subjects based on the following criteria:
- The subject is a level 1 researcher, regardless of whatever anomaly or project said researcher is assigned to.
- XXXX instances will continue to observe their targets only for as long as they are level 1 researchers.
- If subject is removed from reality, the subject reappears before the anomaly undergoes a Realignment Event.
SCP-XXXX instances will continue to track their subjects and move to follow them if they move beyond a two hundred meter radius from the anomaly. When this happens, the instance will move to follow
until it is again hovering around 25m above their subject, while remaining locked onto the subject at all times.. SCP-XXXX does not appear to be able to exceed speeds beyond 42kph. The instances will follow their subjects regardless of distance, even if the subject is engaged in cross continental or intercontinental travel. When a subject ceases to be in the level 1 pay grade, whether by promotion/demotion, cessation of employment, death, or removal from reality. The instance will select another level 1 researcher at random, either from the same site or the instance will move to a different site altogether. Once selected, SCP-XXXX will resume its studies.
SCP-XXXX instances possess the ability to determine when a subject has died or undergone
teleportation to another location on Earth. When the latter occurs, the instance will rotate in a scanning motion until its subject had been required, then close the distance as needed. If the subject undergoes inter-dimensional transition, SCP-XXXX instances will continue to scan until the subject has reappeared. If the subject remains missing when the anomaly undergoes a Realignment Event, the instance will select a new subject when the event concludes. Discharge Events do not seem to be affected by this parameter.
Subjects selected by SCP-XXXX tend to have shorter tenures on average than most Level 1 researchers. Roughly two out of three subjects of SCP-XXXX instances end their tour of duty on the Level 1 paygrade 20-35% sooner than their colleagues. This higher turnover has raised the possibility that SCP-XXXX may, through either paranormal or otherwise anomalous means, or through some complex calculation and/or understanding of probable outcomes, be able to determine in advance which junior researchers will have the shortest Level 1 tenures. While no concrete evidence currently exists to support this hypothesis, the suggestion has been made to keep a selected subject of SCP-XXXX in the Level 1 paygrade for as long as possible. The proposal for pursuing this line of action is currently suspended until more data on SCP-XXXX has been collected, such as how they select their individual subjects.3 No subject selected by SCP-XXXX has held their Level-1 tenure for more than four years.
| Notable Transfers of SCP-XXXX Subjects |
| SCP-XXXX instance | Subject(s) | Reason for transfer | Additional notes |
| SCP-XXXX-01 | Assistant Researcher █████ ███ | Casualty of SCP-682 containment breach. | N/A |
| SCP XXXX-03 | Junior Researcher ████████ | Drawn into SCP-106's pocket dimension. | Instance underwent realignment event 15 minutes later snd directed its attention to Assistant Researcher ████, who was also assigned to SCP-106. Junior Researcher ████████ was released from SCP-106's custody eighteen hours later. ████████ suffered mortal injuries from corrosion and was declared deceased ninety minutes after release. SCP-XXXX-03 did not resume interest in Junior Researcher ████████. Subject was also involved on research into SCP-106. This is the only recorded event where an SCP-XXXX instance has directed its attention to two subjects assigned to the same anomaly. |
| SCP XXXX-03 | Assistant Researcher ████ | Subject succumbed to pancreatic cancer. | See previous entry. |
| SCP-XXXX-05 | Assistant Researcher ████████ | Subject promoted. | SCP-XXXX-05 immediately underwent a discharge event, then cycled through to another discharge event roughly five minutes later. This is the shortest interval between discharge events recorded and is thought to be a glitch. |
| SCP-XXXX-06 | Junior Researcher █████ | Subject's identity underwent rapid degradation after exposure to a latent cognito hazard from [REDACTED] and was administered Class F Amnestics. | Instance selected next subject after two days of scanning. These circumstances are believed to be unprecedented in SCP-XXXX-06's experience and the anomaly was forced process and adapt accordingly. |
| SCP-XXXX-08 | Junior Researcher ████-█████ | Subject entered a fugue state lasting eighteen months. Subject believed she was an intern for the San Diego City Council. | The suppression of Junior Researcher ████-█████'s real identity as a result of the fugue state was sufficient to remove her from SCP-XXXX criteria. Instance immediately moved onto new subject. |
Discovery: The first instance of SCP-XXXX was discovered on ██/██/1967 by accident during a field testing of SCP-████ at Site [REDACTED]. It was soon determined to be following the movements of Junior Researcher █████. When Junior Researcher █████ was made aware that he was under observation of the instance, said instance vanished. No other anomalies were detected during this event.
It was first postulated, from the SCP-XXXX-00's disappearance, that an SCP-XXXX instance will withdraw if any subject under its study becomes aware of it. This is believed to be a security feature included in SCP-XXXX's basic programming.
On ██/██/1995 the security for Site 26's computer archives had been disabled due to a recent software update and Junior Researcher ████ ██ █████ accessed his own file, whereupon he learned he learned he was the subject of study by SCP-XXXX-07. SCP-XXXX-07 promptly vanished as a result and, to date, has not reappeared. This event has been taken as confirmation of the withdrawal theory formed from SCP-XXXX-00's departure. Current locations of either instance are as yet unknown.
Dr. ████ has raised the question as to whether or not an instance of SCP-XXXX will vanish if one of its former subjects is made aware that they had once been a subject of its information gathering. Requests for testing this hypothesis have been denied.
The question has been raised as to why SCP-XXXX focus solely upon the lowest tier of Foundation research personnel. One theory is that SCP-XXXX, despite its artificial nature, may be vulnerable to memetic or cognito hazards under study by the Foundation, or vulnerable to certain anomalies the Foundation currently contains. This has led to the further theory that if the instances themselves are not vulnerable to memetic/cognito hazards, that its creators may very well be and that said hazards maty be passed onto them through a review of SCP-XXXX data collection. It has also been speculated that SCP-XXXX may be part of a hierarchy of data gathering devices, and that other models may be trained on other pay grades within the Foundation, though this remain speculation at this point. In response, Project Greta has been proposed. The project will involve neutrino readers like those employed by SCP-XXXX, once the ability to create and develop that technology becomes available to the Foundation, in combination with SCP-████ and [REDACTED]. The primary focus of Project Greta will be the ongoing analyses of active SCP-XXXX instances, as well as locating and studying (if any) other devices discovered by SCP-XXXX's creators. In addition to Foundation sites, the O5 council believes that a sweep of the Earth should be carried out to determine if SCP-XXXX instances are involved in surveillance of other agencies, groups of interest, or governments. To this end research into SCP-████ is to be prioritized, in the hopes of expanding its capabilities.
On ██/██/2015, the O5 council voted unanimously to push forward with Project Greta.
