Item#: SCP-???

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-??? is to be contained under the purview of Site ██, located north of ████████, Iceland. A perimeter is to be maintained approximately 100 meters around SCP-??? using chainlink fence and security cameras. Animal deterrents for all local wildlife have been installed along the fence. Personnel are to redirect civilian hikers from the area, and Class-A amnestics are authorized for use on civilians who achieve visual confirmation of SCP-???'s existence. Additional surveillance cameras are to be hidden around surrounding trees to detect movement.

Along the perimeter of the containment area, an outpost will be maintained under the guise of a forest ranger outpost. No less than five MTF operatives disguised as rangers will staff said outpost at any given time.

Due to containment breach on 2-12-████ by insurgents from The Serpent's Hand, Site ██ must be able to dispatch an appropriate response at any given time.

Description: SCP-??? is a large tree, believed to be of the species Taxus baccata. Despite its location in northern Iceland, normally inhospitable to the growth of trees excepting birch and aspen, SCP-??? has grown to a considerable height, measuring approximately 30 meters tall with a diameter of 5 meters.

SCP-??? displays no visible evidence of anomalous attributes other than its exceptional size. However, testing has demonstrated that SCP-??? is completely incorporeal. Attempts to collect the leaves or branches of SCP-??? have shown that researchers are unable to interact with SCP-??? in any physical manner. Experiments show that external light also simply pass through the tree. How the entity can remain visible is still unknown.

SCP-???'s secondary anomalous characteristic will manifest when an object is completely enclosed within (i.e. can not be seen). Once this happens, the object will be instantly transported into a forest populated with identical copies of SCP-???. No other living entities have yet been encountered, although artifacts highly suggestive of other visitors have been found. It is currently believed that this forest, subsequently referred to as SCP-???a, serves as an interdimentional hub between other realities, with the trees acting as portals. Each specimen of SCP-??? within SCP-???a is linked to its own alternate reality. Walking back through the SCP-??? associated with our own dimension will return the subject to the hill, but walking through another specimen of SCP-??? will transport the subject to an alternate reality.

Exploration of alternate realities within SCP-???a has been authorized, with personnel operating out of Site ██.

Addendum ???-01: Due to SCP-???'s location in what is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, increased levels of personnel, in addition to a rotating surveillance team, have been assigned to SCP-??? to prevent its accidental discovery by lost tourists.

Addendum ???-02: Following an attempt by the Serpent's Hand to access SCP-??? on ██-██-██, the construction of hidden watchtowers has been authorized along the established perimeter.

Addendum ???-03: Upon closer inspection, runes resembling a dialect of Elder Futhark have been identified. Attempts at translation are currently ongoing.

Interviewed: Dr. Eric Pichai

Interviewer: █████

Foreword: [Small passage describing the interview]

<Begin Log>
Interviewer: For the record, please state your name.

Pichai: Dr. Eric Pichai. Researcher Rank IV. That’s pretty high, by the way, I dunno what your version is. Have you guys secured the tree yet?

Interviewer: Yes, doctor. Now please explain yourself.

Pichai: Oh, good. Well, like I said, I’m a high ranking researcher from an alternate reality. Once you guys start exploring the tree, you’ll notice that it leads to alternate dimensions. One of—

Interviewer: Sorry, could you please elaborate on what you mean by alternate realities?

Pichai: Well, you walk into the tree. When you walk out, you’re gonna be in a forest of other trees. Walk into another and walk out again—you’re in an alternate reality. Walk back into the same tree and back out, you’re in the same reality you started in.

(clears throat)

That’s a real tongue twister of logic. You following so far?

Interviewer: Indeed. Now please continue.

Pichai: Right. One of those trees will link back to the reality I come from. And like I said, I am, was a high ranking researcher of the Foundation there. I had a very instrumental role in securing multiple SCPs, very dangerous ones. Do you guys know of—

(The next 74 seconds of audio have been retroactively redacted. An unedited audio log can be accessed with level 3 security clearance and site administrator approval.)

Interviewer: Why were you forced to escape?

Pichai: They… disagreed with my efforts. Said I took too many too big risks. I didn’t, by the way. The bureaucrats just wanted to feel important. But they idiotically decided that I would leak foundation secrets somehow? I dunno, they’re stupid—that Foundation—I’m sure you guys are much better. I only contacted external resources in a safe way. I never told anyone without security clearance why I needed the information. But then I, uh, got wind of personnel coming to amnesticize me. Obviously I couldn’t let that happen. So I copied as much work as I could onto my flash drive and left for, well, here.

Interviewer: Can we see the flash drive? It would greatly support your case.

Pichai: Ah. Yeah, so this is a bit embarrassing, but I dropped it in another alternate universe. I was pretty ████ing scared for my life, after all. Don’t really remember which tree, since they all look the same… probably one nearby.

Interviewer: I see. Can you provide a more detailed description of this dimension?

Pichai: See, I remember this one because it’s a big pile of nope. It’s also a universe with some version of a Foundation. They even built a whole site around the tree and everything. But all the SCPs there are loose. I took one step, saw ███ and turned right around. I didn’t have what I needed to deal with it. The flash drive should be right next to the tree though.

Interviewer: Thank you.

Pichai: Please do find it, it will help me help you greatly. Speaking of which, when can I start?

Interviewer: Start?

Pichai: …start researching again?

Interviewer: We’ll let you know. There are…many dangers, as I’m sure you are well are of.

Pichai: Well…. I guess that’s true.

Interviewer: Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

Pichai: No, I think that’s everything important.

Interviewer: Well, thank you Doctor. I will make sure that the Site Director is informed about your… appeal.

Pichai: Thank you. This is Site ██, right? Tell Emerson I said hi.

<End Log>

Closing Statement:

Dr. Pichai appears to come from a universe remarkably similar to our own. Though I have never met his counterpart in this universe, his ability to correctly identify current foundation personnel indicates a high degree of compatibility and familiarity with our protocol/procedure.

His appeal has been relayed to the O5 Council for further consideration.

If I may also submit my own views, I believe that there is much to be gained in his potential employment. There is no established procedure for processing those in his current situation, and where we go from here can set a precedent for the future. One that may provide useful information to the Foundation on, as of yet, undiscovered SCPs.

Signed,

Site Director Emerson

Retrieve the flash drive and confirm his story first. Then we’ll see about employment. - O5 ██

Exploration Log ???-01
Opening Statement: Exploratory Mission ???-01 was authorized on 21-10-██ by Site Director Emerson to begin on 10-23-██. A team of four personnel, led by Captain Saxton, entered SCP-??? with the objective of retrieving a hard drive belonging to Dr. Pichai (temporary ID 715493).

Due to clearance level, only Captain Saxton and Field Medic Mertens are aware of this objective. MTF Operative Ressler and Field Researcher Howes have been informed that they are participating in a purely exploratory mission of SCP-??? for foundation use.

Identifying as Captain Saxton, currently leading the expedition into SCP-???. With me are Mertens, Howes, and Ressler. (dryly) I have just been informed that we are apparently walking into a tree.

(whispered)

So, one of my buddies back at Site ██ told me that the Foundation doesn’t really bother checking the mission logs unless something happens. Hopefully, nothing does. I like my continued existence, thank you very much—and I don’t know about that hazard pay.

Does the Foundation even provide hazard pay?
(indistinguishable chatter can be overheard)

Ressler, put that thing down!

(a sigh)

Fine, fine. I see that we're taking things seriously then.

Pre-missions checkup. All equipment and personnel are accounted for. We are about to enter the tree.

<End Log, 08:15>

Mission Log, Audio Transcript from Captain Saxton: 23-10-██

<Begin Log, 08:23>

We have reached the other side of SCP-???. Nothing major to report. No signs of danger or life, hostile or otherwise.

(dry) We are also surrounded by trees.

Howes is setting up a beacon so we can find our way back to the home tree. It looks exactly the same as the rest of them, so here's to hoping that we get back to the right one after all is said and done.

<End Log, 08:25>

Mission Log, Written Statement from Field Researcher Howes: 23-10-██

<Begin Log>

So many identical versions of the tree. I wonder how that's even possible? By the no cloning theorem alone, this forest shouldn't exist, but I guess SCPs are, by definition anomalous. They don't really jive well with the laws of reality.

Foundation in a nutshell, I guess.

Wish I remembered to bring my own set of research equipment. The standard ones are kind of icky, You can never tell what other people have done with them.

Mission Log, Audio Transcript from MTF Operative Ressler: 23-10-██

<Begin Log, 08:15>

No sign of anything interesting yet. Just trees.

(shuffling can be heard)

Hey, Mertens. If we find a tropical paradise, what do you think the chances are of the Foundation using it as a new vacation resort?

(inaudible reply)

Guess not.

No injuries to report.

Alright, Howes is done setting up the tracker. Just going to pick a tree at random and walk into it now. According to Howes and his damned confusing polar coordinates, this one is (1.67 rad, 4.15 m) from home tree.
(several seconds later, a brief burst of static occurs)
Shit, shit— Howes, put down the damn thermometer and get out of there!

I don’t care about the readings; there’s nothing here. We need to leave now.

(another burst of static accompanies the team’s presumed exit)
