Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX and all instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are to remain contained at Site-11 in a secure storage locker. Research staff access for experimental purposes requires minimum Clearance 3 and express written permission from a research staff member of minimum Clearance 4. Research staff of Clearance 2 may also be granted access if supervised by another authorised staff member of minimum Clearance 3.

Neither SCP-XXXX nor any instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are to leave the room they are contained in, and no written work or writable booklet is to to brought into the room SCP-XXXX is contained in without express written permission from research staff of minimum Clearance 4. A 'written work or writable booklet' is defined as multiple attached pages of writable material, usually paper, with or without written content contained in the pages. The work or booklet is to be thoroughly inspected by the Clearance 4 staff considering its use before authorising experimentation. Furthermore, researchers testing SCP-XXXX or an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 may bring with them one (1) electronic tablet for the purposes of recording anomalous behaviour.

Researchers conducting experiments on SCP-XXXX or an instance(s) of SCP-XXXX-1 must also be searched by a minimum Clearance 3 member of security staff prior to experimentation, to ensure the above restrictions are adhered to. After testing, a specific report of all anomalous behaviours exhibited by the test subject(s) must be submitted within 48 hours.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a first edition copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, published 21 September 1937. Inspection of its front and back covers is thoroughly consistent with a normal copy of the book, as is the number and physical material of the pages. Anomalous properties are only exhibited when the book is read, and only to one (1) reader at a time.

SCP-XXXX's text content is largely similar to the original work, but its narration is significantly altered so as to directly communicate with the specific individual reading it. As such, the narration is unique to the reader and to the reading session.

The narrator appears to know a great deal of information about the original work and the reader, including information not directly supplied by those sources, and sometimes information not known by those sources. The narrator is responsive to words spoken by the reader while reading, though it can only 'hear' the reader viewing its anomalous behaviour. After being read, a page of SCP-XXXX will not change for the duration of the reading session (until the book is closed), so the pages must be turned to continue 'discussion'. The narrator always prioritises telling the story, and appears to grow agitated if the reader skips pages or isn't attempting to follow the plot. The knowledge of the narrator, or its willingness to discuss its knowledge, appears to increase over time spent reading.

On SCP-XXXX coming into physical contact with a written work, defined as multiple attached pages of writable material containing written content, the written work will become an instance of SCP-XXXX-1. An instance of SCP-XXXX-1 exhibits all prior mentioned properties of SCP-XXXX, but is not itself capable of producing a new instance of SCP-XXXX-1. The narration of an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 is consistent with the tone and content of the original work. An instance of SCP-XXXX-1 can be questioned on the subject matter and the reader, including sometimes on information unknown to the reader and/or the author(s) of the original work.

Addendum-A: It has been demonstrated that at least some instances of SCP-XXXX-1, and potentially SCP-XXXX, are capable of providing sensitive information, including some unknown to the foundation (see Experiment-XXXX-04). As such, any experiment with SCP-XXXX or an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 must be approved by a minimum Clearance 4 researcher (previously 3). A minimum Clearance 3 researcher may still be the one to accompany a Clearance 2 researcher conducting such an experiment.

Addendum-B: After the success of Experiment-XXXX-05 and Experiment-XXXX-06, it has been suggested that instances SCP-XXXX-1 be produced from reports on various SCP specimens in order to learn more about those specimens. Review is underway.

SCP-XXXX begins reading as a normal copy of the original work, and it follows the original story from beginning to end. Around half-way through the book, however, small differences can be found. These become more apparent and more frequent further through the book, usually closing with a significant amount of new content after the original ending (a paragraph at least). These deviations are unique to the reader, and further readers will see different content. Furthermore, these deviations are only visible to one (1) reader at a time, and any onlooker will observe the expected content.

The deviations in the content of SCP-XXXX begin very benign and do not progress much further than that, but as the story progresses the deviations will become more forward attempts to interact with the reader directly. SCP-XXXX is capable of understanding the speech of the reader, and will often respond to comments made through deviations on further pages. In later pages, SCP-XXXX appears to gain knowledge of the reader and knowledge surrounding the reader that it is not directly told of. This occurs in a majority of cases but is still usually benign. The motivations of SCP-XXXX, if any, are unknown, but appear to be mostly consistent with the tone of the original story and the character of the narrator.

On coming into physical contact with a written work, defined as multiple attached pages of writable material containing written content, SCP-XXXX will change the written work into an instance of SCP-XXXX-1. An instance of SCP-XXXX-1 exhibits all prior mentioned properties of SCP-XXXX, but is not itself capable of producing a new instance of SCP-XXXX-1. Deviations in instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are consistent with the tone of the original work and its narrator. If the narrator is a real human, the narrator will fully believe itself to be that person, and its knowledge will be consistent with that claim. It has been determined that such narrators are simply imitations.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 can be questioned, but only appear to possess knowledge surrounding the original work and the reader. Furthermore, the instance of SCP-XXXX-1 is unlikely to address such questions until later pages, when the deviations have escalated to a suitable point. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are very open to discussion on matters which concern both the original material's subject matter and the reader.
