Exisal Concept Bin: The Predatory Bug

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX-1 through -12 are to be kept in a standard airtight-sealed cell modified with two flamethrower nozzles on the walls. Once per day, the body of one deceased D-class (Corpse transferred from other SCP's) is to be set into the cell. Under no circumstances should any person with security clearances attempt this procedure. Every three days, directly after a feeding, one D-class is to clean the cell of any remaining corpse material in a full-body covering heavy radiation suit.

In the case of the D-class becoming an SCP-XXXX-A instance, the two flamethrowers on the walls are to be activated for a minimum of ten seconds. Any and all SCP-XXXX-A instances that are not as a part of testing are to be terminated immediately.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an intelligent (See Addendum-XXXX-A) insect with the size and shape of a devil's coach horse beetle in its base form, having large, filmy wings and thick elytra, in a hive of 12. It is characterized by its many eyes, scattered all across its body. When threatened, its risen tail end peels open and releases a long hooked tail, measured to be at most two meters. The compacting method for this tail is undergoing research. On the end of this tail is a large barbed hook filled with an, as of yet, unidentified neurotoxic fluid. When this tail connects with the victim's brain stem, SCP-XXXX can gain full control of the victim, now designated SCP-XXXX-A. Disconnecting this tail will not cause further anomalous effects, but immediate medical attention will typically be needed. (As of current tests, the tail will only need to connect to the spine of an animal, or body of an invertebrate.)

SCP-XXXX is capable of limited anomalous transformation abilities; capable of shifting into shapes outside of its common form, which it utilizes when threatened, or hunting prey. Due to this ability, SCP-XXXX can be easily lost in a natural environment, thanks to understanding its own abilities and camouflage. Furthermore, SCP-XXXX instances have been found to understand more complex hunting strategies, such as hunting in groups and ambushing prey.

While SCP-XXXX has been found to be capable of living without food for extended periods of time, the longer an SCP-XXXX instance goes unfed, the higher the cutting power of the tail. At one week without feeding, SCP-XXXX has been found to be capable of cutting through even steel. Nourishment appears to weaken the tail.

When SCP-XXXX manages to control a specimen and kill it, they will burrow into the corpse's ribcage (Or stomach area in lack of a ribcage,) and eat the corpse from the inside, and breed within the ribcage bones. Resulting bugs from this breeding process have been found to be non-anomalous and are cleared to be killed or set into the wild after any requested testing by SCP-XXXX's designated researchers.

Addendum XXXX-A: SCP-XXXX-1 through -12 were discovered after reports of a new 'long-tailed beetle' that had stabbed a trail runner and caused him to attempt to kill himself before being intercepted by police. Alerted by a Foundation member living in the area, amnestics were distributed and MTF-Trapper-9 "The Beatles" was dispatched to capture the hive. During the capture of SCP-XXXX -1 through -12, MTF-Trapper-9 member, Cassandra Song, was impaled and controlled by an SCP-XXXX instance. The following was recorded from MTF-Trapper-9's team leader, Wilbur Cavort.

T-9 Fletcher: You know, what the hell are the chances we run across some specific beetles?

T-9 Gavin: You know, what the hell are the chances we live in a universe these anomalies exist?

T-9 Wilbur: Both are as likely, so I'd say the chances are low.

T-9 Cassandra: I still can't believe they basically made pesticide M16's for us.

T-9 Gavin: Don't forget the package deal with burst and automatic fire, fresh from M, C & D.

T-9 Wilbur: Hey, as stupid as it sounds, we owe those guys in R&D our lives a hundred times over.

T-9 Fletcher: They probably owe us their lives a thousand times over. Site-22 has suffered more than one breach, y'know.

T-9 Cassandra: Yeah, and what did we do during those breaches? Help set a perimeter. I'm not saying that it's not important, but I think they more owe their lives to the frontline guys.

T-9 Fletcher: Let me have my moment at least.

T-9 Wilbur: My thermal's starting to pick something up, pretty small. Anyone else?

T-9 Gavin: Picking up a few dots, yeah. Kind of odd, might be our thing.

T-9 Cassandra lifts her goggle set upward, looking down.

T-9 Cassandra: That's our bug, I think. Devil's coach horse, right?

T-9 Gavin: "Zed, we've got a bug."

T-9 Wilbur: You all have your containers?

The team reach to their sides and take small boxes, with the exception of Cassandra.

T-9 Fletcher: Cassandra, you want to help out or should we do it?

At the edge of the camera view, a long tail can be seen, plunged into Cassandra's neck. Wilbur does not notice.

T-9 Cassandra: Boxes bad.

T-9 Wilbur: Cassandra, are you okay?

Cassandra ticks the safety on the modified M16. Wilbur reaches for his sidearm.

T-9 Gavin: She has some kind of tail in her neck. Permission to shoot it in half?

T-9 Wilbur: No. We don't know what might happen. We need to get her back to '22, and fast. Cassandra, drop the rifle.

Fletcher takes his radio, clicking it on.

T-9 Fletcher: -22 Command, can you hear us?

T-9 Gavin: Tail's leading down to a beetle, sir. Two others with it.

T-9 Wilbur: Both of you, watch your backs, and the beetles.

Site Command: Loud and clear. What's going on?

T-9 Fletcher:

Workers after experiencing SCP-XXXX-A report seeing nothing but black during the phenomena, losing control of their bodies, and hearing a buzzing in their ears alongside feeling their skin crawl afterward. D-class exposed to SCP-XXXX-A and later to another SCP have sometimes died spontaneously. Autopsies revealed hatchlings of SCP-XXXX going throughout the muscle and flesh, eating it away. This anomaly was later burned. Exposure to SCP-XXXX-12 reveals a ditzier, naive personality in comparison to SCP-XXXX-1 through -11. When interviewed, the latter SCP demanded control and more feed, while the former instead requested small sweets. When one D-class offered to SCP-XXXX-12 what it requested, it metamorphosed into a rose-colored, small beetle with a shining underbelly. The amounts of eyes appeared to double, and the responsible D-class reported seeing the beetle's barbed stinger drip with honey-like substance. Contact with this fluid caused hallucinogenic visions and an unknown voice coming from SCP-XXXX-12, telling of an event the D-class could only describe as, "Being told when and where to die and by whom's hands, somehow calm and understanding," while in reality, SCP-XXXX-12 had stung the D-class's palm in an attempt to gather more of the offered sweets.

This is the only case in which SCP-XXXX has not harmed someone outright with the venomous sting. Theories have begun that due to where SCP-XXXX-12 emerged from the ribs faulted in its development.

(reference — the bugs secret a poisonous sting that causes bubbling pain and splitting flesh. they grow in reaction to being captured as an attempt to free themselves. do not catch the bugs. they are very small, about the size of a finger joint. the stingers instead are hooked scythes. in most scientists' cases, there had to be amputation due to an infection or full euthanasia due to the venom being too close to the brain stem, but not precisely on it, and causing a violent, rabid state of mind. however, even when alive, those in this state still seem mostly dead.
— the bug is a creature that appears to come from serrated corpses in the town of ___, __. the specimens held here are from the body of a man named [REDACTED]. the venom in the bugs acts as a temporary transference of consciousness, allowing communication, but only if precisely on the brain stem.
— the bugs destroy genetic information and feed on all parts of human corpses. they stay within bones and hollow out ribcages to nest. they reproduce when absorbing new genetic code, causing new bugs to rise within the hour. they do not eat clothing. without the host ribs in which they've arrived at the foundation with, they'll tear through even steel.
— the insects also have a pack bond or an infantry group sort of reaction to one another, keeping them together and in the ribs is ideal. keeping them in the ribs and separated is not as ideal, as they'll try to break the separation, and separating from each other and the ribs is dastardly.
— insect 11 or 12 is more psychogenic, having come from Adam's rib and being curious about glucose.
— giving 11/12 sweets changes it to a pinkish lightning bug, still retaining the hooked stinger. it tells prophecies from time to time in this sugar-induced state. testing the others with sugar causes hostility.)
