"You should really consider what you've done over the past two years, Daniel," said the man in the purple tie. "It's truly something of a resume."

Dr. Daniel Victor's stomach sank. The room he sat in did not feel like an office. The desk was moved to the center of the room. The wallpaper was painted black and was barren of any decoration. The sole light source was a lamp O5-9's desk; there wasn't even a fixture installed on the ceiling. It made the room feel like it was coated in a suffocating haze. Victor had trouble breathing.

O5-9's glare cut through the silence; it made his sins feel heavy on his shoulder. He moved with the vigor of a young man, but carried the harshness of something much older.

Once he realized he did not elicit a response, O5-9 continued. "You've gone beyond the realm of war crimes. This is genocide. You can call it whatever you want, but it doesn't change that you've vanquished millions of creatures for largely ideological reasons."

"You and I both know my justification was reasonable," retorted Victor. He was choosing his words carefully. "We've spent decades building up the Veil, and I'm not about to let it all go to waste."
