Threat Level: Orange

Special Containment Procedures: Due to SCP-XXXX's nature, containment is yet to be achieved. Assigned task force STF Chi-18 ("Idai-na-Aniki"1) is to monitor its designated area for sudden, short-lived spikes of Hume levels2, Akiva radiation3 and Landa particles4. Upon confirmation of SCP-XXXX's manifestation, assigned personnel are to be sent to carry out clean-up duties, as well as collecting recorded evidence, under the pretext of a police investigation. The cover story of a serial killer are to be disseminated through the public. (for further information, consult Documentation_XXXX_A.pdf) and survivors are to be interrogated then amnesticized.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an Incorporeal Humanoid Entity colloquially known as "Kuchisake-onna" (口裂け女, "Slit-Mouthed Woman"), that manifests around the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan Area. SCP-XXXX appears as a tall, pale woman with long, black hair dressed in a uniform characteristic of office women, with little variation throughout each case. It wears a surgical mask over its mouth, and is regularly seen carrying a red umbrella, regardless of the weather.

SCP-XXXX manifests during the night, following a set pattern of actions:

  1. SCP-XXXX will manifest near a subject and walk toward them so its encounter will occur in an area with no direct witnesses. If SCP-XXXX is carrying an umbrella, it will always be carrying it on its right hand.
  2. SCP-XXXX will ask the subject "Am I pretty?". If the subject replies in the negative or reacts negatively to its presence, SCP-XXXX's left hand will grow into sharp claws, eviscerating the subject before demanifesting within the next 5 to 10 seconds. The attack always results in the subject's death, and the demanifestation causes sharp fluctuations in local Hume levels, the release of Akiva radiation, as well as Landa particles.
  3. If the subject replies in the affirmative, SCP-XXXX will use its left hand to remove its surgical mask, revealing injuries to the corners of its mouth that reach up to its ears. SCP-XXXX will then ask "Am I still pretty?". If the subject replies in the negative or reacts negatively, they will be killed in the same way as described in step 2, with SCP-XXXX demanifesting shortly afterwards.
  4. If the subject replies affirmatively a second time instead, SCP-XXXX will instead smile, thanking the subject before using its claws to cut the subject's cheeks, giving them similar injuries to its own. It will then demanifest as usual.

No change has ever been documented from this set of actions, except in step 4; when thanking a subject, different phrases have been documented.

The common patterns observed in its appearances are:

  • It always attacks at night, no earlier than 2 AM and no later than 5 AM.
  • It always attacks people in areas where no direct witnesses5 will be able to either see the attack or intervene.
  • It attacks people from a wide range of ages, the youngest being 17 and the oldest 66. Does not discriminate otherwise.
  • In 88% of cases, SCP-XXXX will be carrying a red umbrella. Only 11% of cases have occurred while it's raining.

Discovery: The first recorded attack attributed to SCP-XXXX occurred in 1979. However, information compiled by the Imperial Japanese Anomalous Matters Examination Agency (IJAMEA) describes a similar entity manifesting as far back as the 17th century. The description of its appearance indicates changes in clothing to reflect the era, and that its manifestations seemed to only frighten people before demanifesting. Whether this is because this entity is different from SCP-XXXX or if its behavior changed at some point in time is currently unknown.

Originally, it was believed that the emergence of the entity was directly tied to a woman who died in a car accident on 1979/07/23, who bore similar characteristics to SCP-XXXX, including injuries to her mouth she covered with a surgical mask. However, the death was non-anomalous in nature, and a seance conducted by GoI-921 ("Shūshū-In")6 confirmed SCP-XXXX to be a separate entity from this woman. SCP-XXXX's manifestations coupled with the report created a popular urban legend by the end of April, 1981.

The urban legend was suppressed through an amnestization and disinformation campaign while the Foundation attempted capture of SCP-XXXX. The disinformation campaigns were successful but, due to SCP-XXXX manifesting at short, random intervals over a large area, the Foundation's attempts at containment were not.

In 1987, after several unsuccessful containment attempts , Project Kakurenbo was proposed.

Project Kakurenbo/SCP-XXXX

Project Kakurenbo is comprised of several groups of experts in incorporeal entities and phenomena from across the globe, tasked with research and containment of SCP-XXXX. Throughout the years, several attemps were made at contacting the entity. None managed to contain it, although they helped ascertain qualities regarding SCP-XXXX's intangibility. A list of notable attempts can be accessed below:

List of containment attempts.

Containment attempt SCP-XXXX/1

Manifestation date: 1988/04/12

Method: A team of 4 MTF Rho-12 ("Yūrei Watch")7 agents were sent to incercept an SCP-XXXX attack.

Result: Team was unable to reach the entity in time.

Containment attempt SCP-XXXX/5

Manifestation date: 1991/01/25

Method: A team of 4 MTF Rho-12 agents were sent to intercept an SCP-XXXX attack. Team was equipped with Type-96 entity scrambling goggles.

Result: Team was able to reach the entity in time, but upon seeing the agents, it began demanifesting. Team was ordered to engage the entity through the use of incapacitating gas and tranquilizing ammunition. Entity was unaffected by these, all objects passing through its body. Entity demanifested after 4 seconds.

Containment attempt SCP-XXXX/14

Manifestation date: 1995/11/19

Method: A team of 6 MTF Rho-12 agents were sent to intercept an SCP-XXXX attack. Team was equipped with Type-96 entity scrambling goggles and Type-199 rifles equipped with reality dispersing ammunition.8

Result: Team was able to reach the entity in time, and as before, SCP-XXXX began demanifesting upon visual contact. Team fired at the entity. While the bullets passed through the entity, these shots were deviated by a few degrees, signaling some sort of resistance. Entity demanifested after 7 seconds, taking longer than previous encounters.

Following these attempts, it was decided that some sort of reality anchoring technology would be able to keep SCP-XXXX in place to allow for containment. At the time, no such technology was available to the Foundation. It wasn't until 2003 that Scranton Reality Stabilizers would be available to use for the project. However, this technology required assembly at the site of SCP-XXXX occurrences, which rendered this plan ineffective.

After years of development, a plan involving the use of SCP-████'s precognitive abilities to determine the date and location of SCP-XXXX's next attack was submitted to the Project Kakurenbo Administrative Committee on 2008/09/21, to then be submitted to the Ethics Committee for evaluation the following trimester. On 2010/03/14, after two revisions, the Ethics Committee approved the plan, which was quickly put into work under the name 'Protocol Iutoori'.

PROTOCOL IUTOORI

Resources allocated

  • SCP-████
  • Dr. Coco Mamiya, Department of Anthropology, in the role of 'Commissioner'
  • Graham McIntyre, MTF Rho-12 ("Yūrei Watch") agent, in the role of 'Kaishakunin'
  • Katana-style sword given to Graham McIntyre, in the role of 'Sword'
  • D-56199 dressed in traditional white garbs, in the role of 'Samurai'
  • Tantō-style knife given to D-56199, in the role of 'Dagger'
  • Wooden board with a sake flask and two cups, in the role of 'Offering'
  • 20 additional Class-D personnel dressed in traditional white garbs, in the role of 'Vassals'

Result

Ritual was performed successfully, requiring only 12 'sacrifices'. The date given for the next manifestation of SCP-XXXX was due in 71 days.

71 days were deemed enough for Project Kakurenbo's containment team to outline the following proposal:

PROBLEM
SCP-XXXX is set to appear in 3-chōme-25 Sakura, Setagaya, Tokyo (35°38'26.9"N 139°38'22.5"E) on the 25th of June at 3:38 AM, 68 days from now. While ample time, it's still rather short for the correct planning and implementation of any engineering project the team of Project Kakurenbo could carry out. While an extension could be requested, it would require another use of Protocol Iutoori, a decision both our team and the Administrative Committee would find undesirable.
As such, this definite plan would have to be devised taking into account only what the engineering team already has at their disposal.

SOLUTION
While the introductory section might lead one to believe there is not enough resources at our disposal, the truth is that the engineering team has been preparing for this occasion for several years, having at our disposal a total of 3 Scranton Reality Stabilizers (SRS), and a Mark 2 Scranton Reality Anchor (SRA). While these pieces of equipment must remain immobile, and have only been tested in closed environments, data from other sites lead us to believe these will be helpful in stabilizing local reality around the area where SCP-XXXX will manifest, thus rendering the entity tangible.
Using these machines as a base, the following plan was conceived for the containment of the entity:

  • A total of 3 SRS and 1 SRA will be positioned around the perimeter, operated by technicians. Once SCP-XXXX manifests, the 3 SRS machines will be powered. If this isn't enough to keep the entity tangible, the SRA will also be powered up9.
  • A Class-D equipped with a PPI10 stimulating collar who will act as the subject to activate and distract SCP-XXXX.
  • An MTF squad, preferably from Rho-12 due to their understanding of the entity, who will be equipped with Type-96 entity scrambling goggles and three types of ammunition: Tranquilizing darts, reality dispersing rounds, and purifying shotshells. The first two will be used to sedate and immobilize SCP-XXXX as required, while the last will only be used if the need to injure or terminate the entity arises.

It is believed that this plan has extremely high chances of succeeding, and if it were to fail, the losses would be minimal.

KNOWN ISSUES
While not all SCP-XXXX instances have resulted in death, most have, and is thus believed that the D-class would run considerable danger in the position they'd be in. To minimize this, D-class should either be instructed to reply in the positive to only receive injuries, or attempt to find another way to distract the entity. The urban legend tells that the 'Kuchisake-onna' can be distracted by either not answering or answering anything outside of 'yes' or 'no'. This decision is to be left to the operator coordinating the plan.

Letisya Çağlayan, Head of Engineering, Project Kakurenbo

Addendum SCP-XXXX.1: The plan described on the previous proposal was confirmed to be able to be carried out, and went into effect on the day of the manifestation, at 3:00 AM. A log of the operation through D-41210's feed can be accessed below:

Through other cameras available, D-41210 was confirmed to have been impacted by the round, the round going through them, similar to the shots taken at the entity. D-41210 vanishes in similar fashion to SCP-XXXX, although notably faster, despite the 4 reality stabilizers operating in the area.

The operation was considered a failure, and D-41210 was assumed MIA until two hours later when the feed returned, showing D-41210 having manifested 3 km south from their previous location. When recovered, their uniform had received damage around the abdominal area, consistent with the bite of a large beast, and their PPI collar was missing. They were taken to Site-50's infirmary where it was confirmed they were uninjured. During post-mission investigation, it was noticed that D-41210's camera had recorded all two hours and twenty three minutes they had been missing due to a redundant system installed into it. Notable fragments from this feed have been transcribed below:

No new information was gathered from D-41210's post-mission interview. The D-class was reprimanded for approaching SCP-XXXX, breaking away from the plan. Further punishment was deemed unnecessary.

Addendum SCP-XXXX.2: 18 hours after the operation, the entity identified as an 'oni' by SCP-XXXX manifested in front of Kaminoge Station, attacking people nearby. MTF Rho-12 was quickly deployed, terminating the entity after 23 minutes, the entity collapsing into soot upon death. The sudden attack resulted in 12 casualties, with 3 MTF agents being injured. An amnestization and disinformation campaign was carried out afterwards, and all evidence of the incident was collected.

After this last event, and considering the previous addendum, it was decided that SCP-XXXX was only part of a bigger anomaly, and a reclassification was required. A proposal was submitted to the Classification Committee, and a new revision of the document was produced.
