Article/Theorem debating how you define sentience in ai

Background - this all started when I and prof. xxx were having a debate over lunch…

so and so believed that sentience only required comps to comunicate with us, but thats wrong due to err messages and etc + dfrnt philosphy on copying pasting data

what is sentience:
- I believe sentience is just a form of complex copy and pasting
-it is often stated that everything we create is just reimagined stuff weve already seen before
-the same is true for machine learning algorithms.
-emoji face algorithm, show copy and pasted parts
-bring up said copy and paste dilemma
-sentience != copy and pasting, right?
-for example, if I asked you to add a horn to this face you could, but the program couldn't b/c it doesn't know what a horn is
-however, and I don't speak jpns so I could be wrong, but could you imagine [JAPANESE WORD FOR TOPHAT] on this face? no, you can't b/c you don't know what [WORD] means. This = same error from comp., however what if I told you [WORD] = tophat, you can now easily imagine the face with a tophat. Similarly, if I asked the algorithm to add a tophat to said face it wouldn't be able to because it wouldn't know what a top hat is. However, if I were to show it a tophat it could then add a tophat to said face

-however, this still isn't sentience. A sentient being needs to have this copy paste ability, the ability to store past data for future use (EXPLAIN AS BY PRODUCT)
- The ability to know that there is missing knowledge, such as by outputting an error
- The ability to seek out this knoweledge when given appropiate tools
-it then needs to modify stored data as needed for this new data. For example, if you start wearing glasses an algorithm would have to be able to create that attribute for you and assign it an arbitrary meaning. This meaning could be anything, just so long as it was made soleley by the algorithm.

-The issue with determining sentience is that comp algorithms are also just copy and pasted bins of our knoweledge

- a test, therefore, could be to present an AI with a series of unique problems it wasn't designed to do as well as a sample of useful and noneuseful data and see what it can do.

- The AI Doesnt need to be correct, but it needs to show that it is using pieces of data to create new data in order to show this first requirement

- This also facilates the need to dynamically create new functions/actions to use this data, akin to imagining a person walking then flying

- This would mean sentient non-anomls algorithms already exist, however and it would be. HOWEVER, said algorithms lack imagination. They use the same algorithm to define what data is or is not relevant to a specific problem. In order to be truly sentient it would have to have the ability to change this as it sees fit.

-For example, escape a room…. at first you might do xyz, but you could also do abc [absurd ideas that require leaps of logic]

- thus far our test provides a means of testing that first xyz portion, but not that abc portion.

-In order to prove abc portions xyz tests would have to repeated to reveal a trend, sowing blah blah blah

- In summary computer intelligence requires the copying and pasting data just as human brains require the copy and pasting of ideas. A comp alg just has to prove that it can apply this tactic in a variety of unintential ways akin to us.
