SCP-004-1
Item #: SCP-004
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-004-2 through -13 are not permitted to be moved off-site unless accompanied by two authorized security personnel. Should any of the objects contained within SCP-004-1 breach containment, or the facility be breached, the keys must be brought inside and the door closed prior to activation of Site 62’s on-site warhead. Unauthorized removal of keys from the testing area is grounds for termination of Foundation employment and reintegration into the civilian populace.
Description: SCP-004 consists of an old wooden barn door (SCP-004-1) and a set of twelve rusted steel keys (SCP-004-2 through SCP-004-13). The door itself is the entrance to an abandoned factory in Elko, Nevada.
Chronological History
07/02/1949: A group of three juveniles trespassing on federal property near Elko find the door. According to their testimony, they found a set of rusted keys in an iron lockbox and determined what door the keys unlock. The juveniles are taken into custody after a missing persons report is filed for one of their friends (hereafter SCP-004-CAS01).
07/03/1949: Local authorities find the severed right hand of SCP-004-CAS01 eight kilometers from SCP-004-1. Other parts of SCP-004-CAS01's body are found scattered as far as 32 km from the factory. Under interrogation, the apprehended juveniles tell authorities that upon opening the door with one of the keys, SCP-004-CAS01 was torn into several pieces, each of which disappeared. Agents embedded within the Elko Police Department take note of the case and the SCP Foundation takes over the investigation.
07/04/1949: Agent Wright obtains the keys from the local authorities to begin testing. It is determined that SCP-004-2 through SCP-004-13 all fit into a single lock on the large barred door. Twelve Class D personnel are assigned to test the effects of the door. Of the twelve test subjects each trying a different key to enter the room, only two survive. Opening the door with any key except SCP-004-7 or SCP-004-12 caused the test subjects to be torn apart in multiple directions; however, no dismembered parts were found until later. At the time of writing, only two parts of each subject have been recovered (with the exception of the subject using SCP-004-8, whose pieces were scattered in close proximity). The others have, for all intents and purposes, vanished from existence.
Of the two surviving subjects, only one (having used SCP-004-7) returned unharmed. The other came back in a near-catatonic state, able only to remove himself from the room and then collapse on the floor. Further useful information could not be ascertained. The subject using SCP-004-7 asserted that he had entered a large room, impossibly large for the size of the attached building. After his exit, SCP-004-1 was propped open and an armed squad of Level 3 personnel entered. The size of the room is infinitely large; to clarify, although walls and a ceiling can be seen in a distance, they seem impossible to reach and move farther away when approached. In addition the door frame and the individuals in the room are the only part of the room that can be touched or illuminated.
07/16/1949: The juvenile suspects, as well as personnel involved in the origin investigation, are given amnestics and reintegrated into the civilian population.
08/02/1949: The are surrounding the factory is declared a hazardous area due to unexploded ordnance and fences are erected in order to prevent civilian ingress. Tests to determine safety of exposure to environment behind SCP-004-1 begin.
12/01/1950: Space-time anomalies resulting from exposure to SCP-004 are confirmed. Testing is suspended until further notice.
07/02/1979: The unaccounted-for remains of SCP-004-CAS01 appear unexpectedly outside SCP-004-1. Despite being killed decades before, the remains of SCP-004-CAS01 are not decomposed in any manner and are still warm to the touch. Blood remained uncoagulated until after the incident. The remains are remanded for testing.
07/04/1979: The unaccounted-for remains of one of the twelve original test subjects appear in similar manner to those of SCP-004-CAS01. The remains have been designated SCP-004-CAS02. This incident suggests that both SCP-004-CAS01 and CAS02 used SCP-004-11.
03/21/1999: Due to increased tension with Groups of Interest, many of them have begun to stockpile reality-affecting weapons. It has thus become important to have a Foundation Site disconnected from reality in such a way that it could potentially survive a ZK-Class Reality Failure event. SCP-004 is selected as a candidate, since the area accessible via SCP-004-7 is both habitable and infinite in size. Construction begins on a facility capable of holding at least 30,000 person-days worth of supplies.
04/21/1999: Director Karlitz has ordered the site inside SCP-004 to be expanded to include emergency storage for all mobile SCP-3201 specimens and a 75-petabyte database for the storage of all SCiPNet information. The facility is now referred to as Site-62.
09/25/2000: Site-62 is operational. Labs and containment units are complete and can contain the most dangerous specimens. Backup of SCiPNet has begun.
01/25/2001: Due to time anomalies, all personnel working at Site-62 are now required to reside on-site permanently. Families of personnel are to be informed that loved ones perished in an industrial accident. All funerals have been ordered to be closed casket.
08/14/2003: Massive power outage across Northeast United States and through Canada. Due to the initial failure of multiple SCP generators, Site-62 was without power for fifty-three minutes. During those fifty-three minutes, those on site were completely without any source of light. They reported sensing creatures and people, although no abnormal entities could be seen or felt. Selected facility personnel said the creatures sensed were very tall humanoids that appeared to be observing them from a distance.
02/04/2021: Site-62 has been abandoned. MTF Juliett-4 ("Between the Lines") is responsible for moving remaining anomalies from Site-62 to the nearby Site-22. Personnel are assumed to be lost unless proven otherwise.
Additional Notes
Testing on SCP-004 reveals that ten of the keys open SCP-004-1 on a dimension where the laws of physics and topology are significantly different than those of our home dimension. Test subjects meeting these hostile conditions are torn apart, their body parts deposited in various locations, only three of which have been verified to be on Earth. Material deposited at two of these points appears immediately; material deposited at the third appears exactly 30 years into the future. The other seven locations are currently unknown.
Of the two keys that do not instantly terminate the subject, only one is not sparsely documented. Subjects return from the reality accessed via SCP-004-12 in a state of mania that almost always ends in a fatal brain aneurysm or an extended comatose state. In addition, this reality is inaccessible to automated drones.
In contrast, the reality accessed via SCP-004-7 appears to be an infinitely large space with similar conditions to that of Earth. Gravity, atmosphere, and even magnetic fields are nearly identical to the outside. However, the interior of SCP-004 experiences a temporal anomaly, where time within SCP-004 passes faster than outside at an inconsistent rate. Due to the dangers associated with temporal offset, personnel assigned to Site-62 are not allowed to leave Site-62.
Appendix A: Site-62 Psychological Evaluation
Written by Amelia Westwill, PhD, as part of a measure to increase mental health across the Foundation. Written on 2011/02/28.
In regards to Site-62, I can't say it was easy to get in, even on Ethics Committee orders. Apparently, the "no one goes in or out" edict was written a long time ago, and it's hard to override procedures that old.
As for the actual psychological condition of Site-62: it's horrid, even by Foundation site standards. It's as if the entire site is staffed by robots. Everyone is either conducting research on anomalies, stiffly walking around the halls, eating or sleeping. There's leisure quarters, but as far as I can tell they haven't been used in years.
Talking to the personnel is even worse. When they sit down, you can almost see their eyes glassed over. Any questions I asked were answered in one or two sentences, at best.

Current testing focuses on two avenues of research. The first is finding ways to survive SCP-004’s hostile topologies. The second, proposed by Director Karlitz, suggests that SCP-004-2 through -13 may open doors other than SCP-004-1. Attempts to use SCP-004's keys on non-anomalous doors have failed, and cross-testing is awaiting approval from all involved parties.
Appendix A: Mental Health Effects of SCP-004-12
All Class D personnel using SCP-004-12 return in a catatonic state, unable to speak. Some may have enough energy left to try to claw out their eyes. Of the 16 subjects, only 4 have survived. Only one, D-4438, has regained speech, following long-term psychotherapy.
He described that SCP-004-1 led to a room containing several tables and factory equipment. This room was smaller than the factory's outside would suggest. Although the equipment could be touched, it was unable to be moved or activated. D-4438 described this not as the machinery being stuck, but as if the object itself was frozen in place.
D-4438 then looked out the window, revealing a plane of dying grass that extended for as far as he could see. It was at this point that D-4438 began to experience a burning sensation in his eyes. He turned towards the door, only to find that the wall was not there; it had been replaced with a hole into a black space, containing several extremely tall, thin humanoid figures made of what D-4438 described as "angry light".
It was at this point that D-4438 recalled fainting. When he had woken up, the burning sensation in his eyes had magnified to the point where he tried to gouge them out. It is of note that this account does not match what actually happened: while D-4438 describes spending several minutes in SCP-004 before fainting, he spent only four seconds in SCP-004 before climbing out and then collapsing. It is unknown if this is an additional mental effect or another symptom of SCP-004's spaciotemporal anomaly.
Appendix B: Additional Information
The origin of SCP-004 is unclear. The former owners of the factory denied being aware of SCP-004 and interrogation of the juveniles insisted that they had recovered SCP-004-2 through -13 in an iron lockbox found outside of SCP-004-1. In addition, several surveys of the factory commenced from its abandonment in the 1890's to SCP-004's discovery in 1949. None of these surveys mention an iron lockbox.
In addition, the actual mechanism of SCP-004's function is unclear. It does not appear to be an alternate reality or localized pocket dimension, as traditional methods of transuniversal travel do not function properly for SCP-004. Attempts to build a transdimensional tunnel from Site-01 to Site-62 as a contingency have failed for this reason.
