Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Due to the inability to move SCP-XXXX and its unique location, site-XXXX has been established to ensure its security. All footpaths, trails, and roads leading towards or past site-XXXX's location have been walled off or otherwise rendered unusable for public access and viewing. All areas within a 1 km radius are to be continuously monitored and secured covertly; citizens outside of the 0.5 km hard boundary are to remain undisturbed unless presenting a reasonable threat to the security of the site. A no-fly zone around site-XXXX that is currently 10 km in radius has been established against all non-military aircraft. Military flights are to be diverted around the zone when possible, while unplanned flights over the area are to be tracked for the deletion of records in the zone and the administration of amnestics to pilots as needed.
SCP-XXXX is to be monitored at all times with an array of ultrasonic sensors. Personnel are not to approach the anomaly unless instructed and/or approved by level 3 or higher on-site personnel. Requested upgrade to level 4 clearance pending.
All information regarding SCP-XXXX is to be kept on site at all times, stored in multiple copies and separated by access level as needed to negate SCP-XXXX's antimemetic effects. Sensor readings are automatically stored in multiple locations and made accessible as needed; readings of interest are stored permanently, while all other data is to be stored for 1 month at minimum. New instances are to be logged, and relevant information updated, as soon as confirmed.
Description: SCP-XXXX is the collective designation for what is currently seventeen (17) metallic spheres of an unknown material resembling an aluminium alloy. Each object measures exactly 33.33 cm in diameter and is suspended above the ground such that the center of the object is exactly 2 m from the surface directly below it. The objects are arranged in a square grid such that the center of each object is exactly 1 m on the horizontal from the centers of its adjacent objects. SCP-XXXX instances cannot be moved by any means, nor can ground directly beneath any point on the instance.
SCP-XXXX is located on an unpaved electrical maintenance road near a suburban residential area approximately ██ km north-northeast of Seattle, Washington. The number of instances has grown by two (2) from the original number of fifteen (15) instances at the time of initial containment.
At seemingly random intervals, SCP-XXXX instances will switch between "visible" and "invisible." While visible, SCP-XXXX instances can be seen on all spectrums. Despite appearing to viewers and recording tools as an appropriate temperature for their surroundings, when a visible instance is touched by a sapient being, the being will develop injuries consistent with those that would be received by touching an object of roughly 600 °C. Similarly, visible instances radiate a faint heat that does not register on thermal scanners of any kind. "Invisible" instances are not visible by any means but can be detected with ultrasonic sensors. Once an instance has become invisible, all information regarding the specific object is immediately removed from the memory of any sentient beings that were aware of its existence. An invisible instance can not be physically interacted with by any means unless approached by a subject that has been made aware of its nature and has been told to envision the object as if it were in its "visible" state. Once the subject "makes contact" with the object, they are transported to SCP-XXXX-b.
SCP-XXXX-b denotes a recursive pocket dimension of nonstandard space that cannot be accessed by any other means. Upon entry to SCP-XXXX-b, subjects experience exactly what they would had they been outside SCP-XXXX-b in real time, with the exception of SCP-XXXX, which is not detectable inside the dimension. External viewers can not see, hear, touch, or otherwise interact with subjects inside SCP-XXXX-b. Radio communication systems are inoperable within SCP-XXXX-b, but all recording devices function as expected.
Exploration logs: SCP-XXXX
Exploration XXXX-01
Subject: D-4842. Subject possessed advanced knowledge of outdoor survival and had a record of multiple counts of illicit hunting practices. Subject was equipped with standard cold weather outfit, appropriate emergency survival equipment, food and water for two (2) days, audio-video recorder, and radio system.
Log: D-4842 was informed of SCP-XXXX and ordered to approach and make contact with an invisible instance. Subject did so and vanished from sight. Despite multiple attempts, no communication could be achieved with D-4842. Approximately seven (7) days later, a new instance of SCP-XXXX, designated SCP-XXXX-16, appeared on ultrasonic monitors, remaining invisible for two (2) hours before entering typical fluctuation.
Exploration XXXX-02
One (1) day after the appearance of SCP-XXXX-16, a recovery was attempted.
Subjects: Assembled recovery team "Outlander" consisting of four (4) members by callsigns Badger, Bobcat, Coyote, and Raven. All members equipped with emergency survival equipment, food and water for three (3) days, audio-video recorder, radio system, and P-90 personal defense weapon. Science specialist Bobcat equipped with additional basic recording systems. ART Outlander's mission was the recovery, if possible, of D-4842 and their equipment as well as additional exploration of SCP-XXXX-b.
Log: Members of ART Outlander were informed of SCP-XXXX and ordered to approach and make contact with SCP-XXXX-16. All members did so and vanished from sight. Audio-video logs from within SCP-XXXX-b transcribed as follows.
[Begin recording]
Raven: Roll call.
Badger: Two by two.
Bobcat: Three by three.
Coyote: Four by four.
Raven: One by one. All members accounted for. The target is unarmed and has been cooperative up to this point, but is in unknown condition. Let's head up this hill for a better view of the area.
OUTLANDER summits a hill on the path.
Bobcat: [Expletive]
On the other side of the hill, a valley identical to that of the entrance zone is visible. Site-XXXX is visible behind the team but not ahead.
Badger: This wasn't in the description.
Bobcat: Considering we're going to be the first ones to exit this place I'm not surprised.
Coyote: Whoosh.
Raven: Cut it. We have a man to find. Any ideas?
Badger: If I were seeing something like this for the first time, I'd just keep going forward.
Raven: That's what we'll do, then. We'll keep track of each iteration that we pass. Entrance zone is valley 0.
[EXTRANEOUS DATA EXPUNGED]
OUTLANDER continues ahead on the trail for approximately thirty-six (36) hours before discovering the body of D-4842 in valley 324. BOBCAT, COYOTE, and RAVEN approach and begin examination and recovery procedures. BADGER summits the hill to scout ahead.
Bobcat: It's just a body. Nothing anomalous except for the lack of decay; I can't tell how long he's been dead
Raven: Anything else worth noting?
Bobcat: Nothing. Damn, wait. His camera looks broken. I can't tell if anything can be taken from it but the thermometer is freaking the hell out. It's cold to the touch despite reading well over 500 °C.
Raven: Put it in a secure container and pack up the body so the eggheads can get a look at it.
Coyote: Shouldn't Badger be back by now?
Raven: He left about twenty minutes ago, so yeah. Roll call.
Bobcat: Three by three.
Coyote: Four by four.
Raven: One by one.
OUTLANDER pauses, waiting for a response.
Raven: We have barely enough rations to go a little further and make it back on a full stomach. Secure the body and we'll see if we can find Badger up ahead.
OUTLANDER proceeds through thirty (30) iterations with no success. RAVEN declares BADGER missing in action and gives the order to return to the entrance zone.
[EXTRANEOUS DATA EXPUNGED]
After approximately twenty-four (24) hours, a short period of radio static is noted by all remaining members of OUTLANDER.
Coyote: Oh lord, I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier.
Raven: Elaborate.
Coyote: Remember the D-class's camera? Suppose our radios are screwed, too. Bobcat, can you take a look at our equipment?
Bobcat: Everything looks normal to me, but the scip has exhibited anomalous electromagnetic properties. Go to the top of the hill, and I'll try to contact you. Stay in sight.
COYOTE summits the hill in front of the team.
BOBCAT hails COYOTE on the radio, receiving no response. COYOTE returns to the team.
Bobcat: That confirms it, then.
Raven: From this point forward, no separating. Everyone needs to maintain visual contact with the rest of the team.
Coyote: I think we can all agree to that. How are we getting out of here, again?
Raven: No clue. Heaven knows what they were thinking sending us in.
Approximately thirteen (13) hours later, OUTLANDER reaches the entrance zone. What appears to be a "visible" specimen of SCP-XXXX is seen where the center of the anomaly would be in the outside world. After discussion, the decision is made to touch the instance and OUTLANDER successfully exits SCP-XXXX-b.
Upon exit from SCP-XXXX-b, Outlander was debriefed, questioned, examined, and returned to normal duty. Twelve (12) days later, a new instance of SCP-XXXX, designated SCP-XXXX-17, appeared on ultrasonic monitors, remaining invisible for approximately twelve (12) hours before entering typical fluctuation.
The body recovered by Outlander was examined along with D-4842's equipment and positively identified as D-4842. Autopsy confirmed time of death to be around the same time as the appearance of SCP-XXXX-16. Cause of death appears to be a combination of starvation, dehydration, exhaustion, overexertion, and trauma. D-4842 had a several injuries, indicating multiple falls and collisions. Data from the recording devices was successfully recovered and examined. See documents XXXX.12 and XXXX.13 for details.
