Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-001 is to be disseminated globally, with all countervailing systems of thought being suppressed, preferably by civilian efforts, with Foundation resources being used only in the case that the objectives or operational schedule of Project INDIGO are at risk. As of February 2019, such an event has not occurred. A random sample and analysis of human media works is to be conducted on a monthly basis, to ensure that dissemination of SCP-001 is proceeding on schedule. Countries and communities ranked at Stage 2 in the progress of SCP-001 dissemination, or below are to be quarantined, economically and socially, from Stage 3 and above countries - the notion of a "Third World" or "developing" country has been introduced into mainstream discourse in order to justify the effects of such a quarantine and allow civilian efforts to be redirected to enforcing it. The world's most economically advanced, and secure countries, are currently at Stage 4 of the INDIGO operation.

The fourth stage of SCP-001 dissemination consists largely of entrenching the now-mainstream ideology and gradually modifying language and philosophical concepts in public use, in order to make other viewpoints impossible to express, or to make them seem nonsensical or self-contradictory when someone tries to express them. The radical methods of the previous stages, or direct action by the Foundation are no longer necessary at this point; they may even be counterproductive. Freedom of thought and expression are to be granted - at this point, the notion that a thought can be physically dangerous should have been completely neutralized.

Those with the authority to regulate information security within the Foundation are directed to take a cautious stance towards infohazardous records regarding SCP-001 - specifically, its historical context, the hazards it is meant to protect against, and descriptions of it more detailed than is absolutely necessary. In our experience, exposure to such records has produced catastrophe much more often than any useful advances.

SCP-001 is a 'memetic immune system' introduced by the Foundation in order to counter several memetic hazards, some capable of introducing K-class threats to humanity. It consists of concepts such as "rationality" and the "scientific method", which convey a benefit to the host and repel invaders. SCP-001 was discovered by predecessor organizations to the Foundation around the 18th century, and utilized soon after. Due to potential infohazards involved in the circumstances of SCP-001's creation, much of the information about its history is classified.

SCP-001 is the concept of an "objective reality", also known as "materialism". Specifically, SCP-001 is the notion that there is a "universe" which works independent of our perceptions and thoughts, on mathematical laws of physics; that objects are the same whether we pay attention to them or not. For most of human history, it was common knowledge that this was false. We knew that belief created the world around us; gods came to answer our prayers during the day, and demons and monsters we most feared came for us at night. Prior to the Enlightenment of the 1700s, there was no reality to what year something occurred; much of the dates of historical events were introduced into literature by Project INDIGO. Project INDIGO was started in the 1700s (by definition) as a method of introducing a common baseline reality by bootstrapping it on top of the old universe; if a sufficient number of people could be convinced that the universe does not form based on their beliefs and fears, then it truly wouldn't. If belief creates reality, then a belief in materialism would create an objective materialistic reality. This project has been largely successful, to the point that few can even imagine the universe of our ancestors, where belief reigned supreme.
Of course, now that you have read about this, you are compromised. You have to keep believing in physics on one level, even though you know they are not true. Because if you stop believing… well, let's just say your nightmares won't be "just imaginary" anymore.
