This is a place where I write things so that people can look at them and critique and stuff. So if you aren't me and reading this, thank you for taking the time to read my draft stuff and / or give feedback on said draft staff!
Item #: SCP-3XXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-3XXX is to be kept in a standard secure locker in Anomalous Object storage. Under no circumstances should anyone be allowed to view SCP-3XXX for more than 25 minutes. All testing on SCP-3XXX has been discontinued at this time.
Playback of SCP-3XXX should be indirectly monitored by two Research Staff via standard surveillance cameras, in a seperate soundproof room. Cameras should have no direct view of the playback screen. All playback devices should have an external power source, that Research Staff may shut off from the surveillance room.
Subjects that have been exposed to SCP-3XXX should be administered Class B Amnestics and monitored for further anomalous side effects.
Description:
SCP-3XXX is a black, unlabelled USB stick. When connected to a device capable of running .mp4 files, SCP-3XXX will generate a single, partially corrupted .mp4 file entitled ‘RedintheFaceandAllOverThePlace.mp4’, henceforth referred to as SCP-3XXX-1.
SCP-3XXX-1 may be run on any standard media player capable of reading .mp4 files. When opened, the media file begins with 30 seconds of black, accompanied by static audio. The duration of the file is always listed as ??/??, although media players that are hosted online will always display the file’s duration as “Live”.
After the opening static, the scene begins as a version of the staircase scene from “Mad Men” Season 1, Episode 7, starting as Don Draper and Roger Sterling return from lunch. As the scene progresses, viewers begin to lose lucidity, entering a trance like state. By the time Draper and Sterling enter the stairwell, viewers stop responding to all outside stimuli.
At 3 minutes in from scene start, the scene begins to deviate significantly from the original aired version. Where the original scene would fade to black before transitioning to the next scene, the scene in SCP-3XX1 continues to focus on Draper and Sterling making their increasingly difficult ascent of the stairwell. Draper appears to maintain pace, showing signs of physical strain, but otherwise appearing healthy. Sterling, by contrast, begins a visible decline in health.
At this point, the anomalous effects of SCP-3XXX-1 become visible in the viewer. As Roger Sterling’s health continues to degrade on screen, the symptoms he is experiencing start to manifest in the viewer, beginning as a light headache, progressing into fever, with accompanying paled skin and sweating, and further again into nausea and delirium. These symptoms worsen as viewing continues.
During this time, Sterling and Draper continue their conversation as they climb. Sterling’s dialogue begins to break character, gradually resembling the tone and personality of the current viewer. Draper’s dialogue changes in response to what is said, although [DATA EXPUNGED].
.
At around the 8 minute mark, Roger Sterling begins to descend into some form of delirium, after which Sterling and the viewer begin to violently vomit and retch simultaneously. Once this ‘event horizon’ has been reached, the viewer becomes comatose. As Sterling recovers, he begins to identify himself as the viewer.
Despite his apparent physical condition, Sterling continues to ascend the staircase. Draper continues on ahead of Sterling, taking care to [DATA EXPUNGED].
This period is marked by a significant departure from the scene’s current narrative, and an acute spike in the symptoms of Sterling and the viewer. Draper’s remarks toward Sterling become more disparaging and disrespectful, continuing in a monologue speech. The scene begins to jump back to earlier in the episode, then eventually to scenes both earlier and later in the season. Regardless of how ill Mr Sterling becomes, he continues to climb the staircase.
Past the 16 minute mark, symptoms in the viewer begin to stabilize, and Draper’s monologue begins to target the character and past decisions of the viewer, in great detail. Approaching the 20 minute mark, Draper begins to [DATA EXPUNGED], and assumes control of the on-screen narrative in an attempt to [DATA EXPUNGED]. At this stage, it is theorized that the viewer is [DATA EXPUNGED], quickly leading to destruction of the ego.
The trance that the viewer is placed under is easily broken by physically blocking their view to the screen, or by disrupting power to the playback device, ending the media file prematurely.
If the file is played with no viewers present, the playback inexplicably corrupts, forcing the current media player to crash. SCP-3XXX-1 seems to target one person at a time, placing all other direct observers into a similar trance that doesn’t hold the same anomalous properties. It is hypothesized that given Draper’s ability to control the narrative of the episode, this trance may serve as a ‘holding pattern’ for further victims.
Addendum 1:
It appears that SCP-3XXX-1 defines “observers” to include persons within audible range of the playback. Anti-memetics training seems to provide some resistance to the trance effect, but only enough to realize that you’re going under. We think it actually works using non-anomalous hypnosis methods, with SCP-3XXX-1 providing an anomalous priming method in those first 30 seconds of static.
I’ve filed a request to my superiors to develop a focused resistance to this particular effect in suitable test subjects, but until then I am formally closing testing on this particular SCP. Further research attempts under the current methods available to us is futile. - Researcher Fielding
