Squidification Hat
rating: 0+x

Item Designation: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a standard anomalous item storage locker outside testing. When in testing a large supply of water is to be provided as rapid dehydration is common among test subjects.

All instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are to be kept in amphibious life form containment chambers filled with seawater kept at 15°C and fed standard D-Class rations twice daily. If a subject refuses 4 consecutive meals their diet is to be changed to 1.5 kg of raw fish fed daily. At time of recording SCP-XXXX-1A, 1F, and 1H are fed in this method.

SCP-XXXX

Description: SCP-XXXX is a lime green polyester novelty hat loosely resembling a squid. With two large cotton stuffed eyes sewn on the front and 6 strips of fabric made to resemble tentacles.

SCP-XXXX's anomalous effects manifest when work by any living human being. Upon being worn the subject will instantly experience a physiological mutation that gives them a trait shared with a species in the order Cephalopoda. These traits are permanent and seemingly selected at random, there appears to be a limited number of different traits that can be manifested as the same mutations have appeared on multiple subjects during testing. These transformations never seem to cause discomfort to the subjects except in cases where the inherited trait makes the subject unable to survive in their current environment. After █ hours of uninterrupted contact with SCP-XXXX a new mutation will manifest. No limit to how many simultaneous mutations has been found as of yet. The current highest amount of simultaneous mutations is estimated to be the ██ distinct mutations of SCP-XXXX-1A, who at time of retrieval was estimated to be ██ hours into its transformation. In testing the same mutation has yet to manifest twice on the same individual which infers a theoretical limit to how many mutations a single individual can have, but that maximum amount has yet to be reached by SCP-XXXX-1A or any other test subject.

For an incomplete list of mutations caused by SCP-XXXX see Addendum-XXXX-A.

SCP-XXXX-1A being examined by foundation staff

SCP-XXXX-1 is a classification given to any human being affected by SCP-XXXX. subjects have a variety of mutations varying in number and severity. All mutations however match traits of the species Architeuthis dux1. All subjects maintain pre-mutation intelligence and are all capable of speech except in cases where the mutation manifested changes the physiology of their respiratory system. It is worth noting that the range in number of mutations is always consistent to the amount of time exposed to SCP-XXXX's anomalous effect.

SCP-XXXX-1A is the instance of SCP-XXXX-1 retrieved alongside SCP-XXXX, It is almost totally identical to the species Architeuthis dux, however the creature has blonde and gray human hair on its mantle, human teeth, and lungs in place of gills, as well as ██ other distinct physiologically human features.

DNA testing shows a match to a marine biologist named Dr. ████ ███████, a researcher for █████ ██████ University specializing in the biology of cephalopods.

SCP-XXXX-1A has proven to still maintain human level intelligence but has lost the vocal chords to speak and no longer possesses the manual dexterity to write, it has been able to, through a series of gestures, demonstrate a desire to reacquire SCP-XXXX (Denied) and is believed to be the creator of SCP-XXXX. On top of the difficulty in willing communication SCP-XXXX-1A is largely uncooperative with foundation personnel. often refusing to communicate with researchers and concealing itself in clouds of ink in order to interfere with observation. Thus all testing done on SCP-XXXX-1A is to be done after sedating the subject.

SCP-XXXX-1B through 1█ are all D-class personnel exposed to SCP-XXXX for testing.

Retrieval: SCP-XXXX was recovered alongside SCP-XXXX-1A which at the time was wearing SCP-XXXX. Foundation researchers presumed the object to be non-anomalous and confiscated it, giving SCP-XXXX-1 the designation SCP-XXXX.

After █ days in containment SCP-XXXX-1A showed signs of severe distress and attempted to communicate to Foundation staff a desire to re obtain the object. The object was taken from storage and was quickly discovered to be the source of SCP-XXXX-1A's anomalous features. It was then that the object was given SCP status as SCP-XXXX and the subject previously designated as SCP-XXXX was reclassified as SCP-XXXX-1A.

The distress on SCP-XXXX-1 after separation from SCP-XXXX led to testing to see if SCP-XXXX was capable of altering the minds of wearers, however after thorough testing of SCP-XXXX as well as interviews with SCP-XXXX-1 the foundation had come to the conclusion that SCP-XXXX is incapable of affecting the minds of individuals in any capacity. The distress on SCP-XXXX-1 is due to the fact that it is the creator of SCP-XXXX and created it for the explicit purpose of transforming itself into a member of the suborder Decapodiformes2, presumably Architeuthis dux. Further interviews about the creation of SCP-XXXX are difficult as SCP-XXXX-1 is no longer capable of speech due the severity of its mutations. This as well as the uncooperative nature of the subject have made details about the nature of SCP-XXXX unclear. Investigation into the former life of SCP-XXXX-1 is ongoing but the foundation has yet to find any documentation on SCP-XXXX's creation.
