Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The original instance of SCP-XXXX is to be placed in an entirely opaque sealed metal sleeve, and kept inside locked cognitohazardous item vault No. █ at Site-██. No copies of SCP-XXXX are permitted to be made outside of testing. Directly after testing, or if found uncontained, any copies of SCP-XXXX are to be destroyed as soon as is reasonably possible. If visual contact with an instance of SCP-XXXX is required to insure proper disposal or recontainment, it is only to be viewed by an already contaminated subject, or a D-class subject if no contaminated individuals are available at the time. No individuals, excepting D-class, who are not currently contaminated by the cognitohazardous effects of the object are permitted to view SCP-XXXX, in any circumstance. The effect of viewing an instance of SCP-XXXX is considered to be its own punishment. It is due to that, as well as the nature of SCP-XXXX, that individuals who have violated that rule and have viewed an instance of the cognitohazard are not to receive any form of disciplinary action.

Individuals affected by SCP-XXXX are given the collective designation of SCP-XXXX-1. They are to be housed individually within standard humanoid containment cells at Site ███ and fed 3 meals a day (though alternative meal plans can be implemented if it is deemed medically necessary). They are to be given at least 2 hours of supervised socialization and recreational time with other instances of SCP-XXXX-1. Regular or semi-regular psychiatric appointments with an on-site mental health professional are to be maintained for all instances of SCP-XXXX. Any requests for furnishings, decoration, or entertainment within reason are to be granted at the discretion of Dr. █████, after being screened for anything which could either be used violently, or which could trigger the effects of SCP-XXXX in afflicted individuals. In conversation with SCP-XXXX-1 instances, they are to be referred to only by their chosen name and/or nicknames, due to several SCP-XXXX-1 instances viewing being referred to by an assigned number to be denigratory, therefore triggering the effects of SCP-XXXX. Any type of what could be considered insulting to an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 is to be avoided.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a piece of 21.59 centimeter by 27.94 centimeter white cardstock paper with a series of previously unknown symbols written on one side of its surface with what appears to be ink from a Sharpie(R) marker, a copy of which is depicted in figure 1.1. SCP-XXXX is a series of symbols, first found on a piece of 21.59 centimeter by 27.94 centimeter white cardstock paper. The original paper containing SCP-XXXX was found in the possession of one █████ ████████, a student of ███████ High School after an unusually sharp increase in self-harming, suicidal, and homicidal behaviors in the sub-adult population was recorded by local law enforcement.

— Viewing SCP-XXXX or any photos of SCP-XXXX— Viewing the symbols which compose SCP-XXXX will cause the viewer to become highly sensitized to any and all forms perceived insults, regardless of insult severity or the viewers previous sensitivity to negative comments. While this effect occurs immediately upon viewing the original copy of SCP-XXXX, the effect is somewhat delayed when viewing copies of the original text. The delay increases exponentially for each degree of separation from the original text. A direct copy will take 10 days to cause any effects in its viewers, while a copy of a direct copy will take 100 days, and a copy of a copy of a direct copy will take 10,000 days. However, the severity of the effect of SCP-XXXX remains the same once it has started to affect the viewer. Individuals contaminated by SCP-XXXX are collectively deemed SCP-XXXX-1.

SCP-XXXX appears to cause a complete change in the viewers personality, as viewers who were later treated with amnestics continued to have strong negative reactions to perceived insults. As such, there is no cure for the effects of SCP-XXXX. However, subjects who have been exposed to SCP-XXXX are still to be amnesticized in order to prevent them from creating a copy and contaminating other individuals. While perceived insults will always create strong emotional reactions in contaminated subjects, the effects of SCP-XXXX can be managed by a combination of psychotherapy with a focus on developing and maintaining distress tolerance and stress management skills.

While increased sensitivity to perceived insults is universal, subjects reactions to said sensitivity vary. These reactions appear to be determined by the temperament of the subject before exposure. Reactions can include but are not limited to: Complete emotional shutdown (temporary or permanent), depressive episodes, self-harming behaviors, self-injurious behaviors, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and violent behavior towards the source of the perceived insult, up to and including attempted murder.
