Item #: SCP-5978
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP 5978-1, SCP 5978-2, and SCP-5978-3 is contained at Site-19 within a 6.5 m x 6.5 m cell. All SCP-5978 components must be set atop the concrete block they "came with" including a steel staircase leading up to the surface. The entrance to the chamber should be a door with a lock, however, the material the door is made of doesn't matter. Personnel with level two clearance or higher are permitted use of SCP-5978. SCP-5978-1 through 3 must be in a specific formation at all times, SCP-5978-3 must stay at the center of the room while SCP-5978-1 must stay behind and facing SCP-5978-3. Finally, SCP-5978-2 must stay to the right and also facing SCP-5978-3.
Description: SCP-5978 is a set of furniture; two bulky couches, and a rug. One of the couches referred to as SCP-5978-1 is made of a lighter tone of smooth leather with two cushions for bedding, two back-cushions, as well as two arms. SCP-5978-1 measures at approximately 1.5 m in length and 0.6 m in width and 0.9 m in height.
SCP-5978-2, unlike its counterpart, is made of cotton and thread instead with a plaid design consisting of blue, white, and green. While SCP-5978-2 has the same dimensions as SCP-5978-1, it is significantly longer clocking in at 2.1 m.
SCP-5978-3 is a thick, plush rug mainly coated with dirty-green and orange stripes. SCP-5978-3 has a length of 2.7 m and a width of 2.1 m.
During tests with Class-D personnel, it is noted that once the subject makes physical contact with SCP-5978-1 or SCP-5978-2 they are immediately put into a deep sleep lasting 9-12 hours. It is reported that once said subject wakes up, they feel more energized and healthier than usual. It is unknown what causes the sleeping effect, it is also important to note that any head-aches or sicknesses subjects had before-hand have ceased or weakened. Subjects have also reported having pleasant or no dreams at all. Dreams subjects had during sleep included peaceful activities such as playing a game of chess with a lost love one or at the beach on a sunny day with ocean waves, or cuddling with an animal such as a cat or dog. SCP-5978-1 and 2 seem to have the same effect on people despite their physical differences. Anyone using SCP-5978 is highly advised to use the restroom or not consume before coming in contact with SCP-5978-1 and 2 as it is recorded that subjects tend to defecate or urinate during sleep. According to researchers, SCP-5978-3 is required for SCP-5978-1 and SCP-5978-2's effects to take place on any human being. Once the formation between SCP-5978-1,2 and 3 break, the effects no longer take place. During dissection of SCP-5978-1, staff performing the procedure had to wear rubber gloves in order to avoid a collision with the object, inside SCP-5978-1 are the standard materials used to build a typical couch including wood and cotton for the cushions, when the insides are touched by any human-being the same effect takes place if you were to touch the outer-layer. SCP-5978 is typically used for sleep-deprived staff or anyone suffering from insomnia, sleepwalking, or night terrors. Both SCP-5978-1 and 2 have a cooldown of 48 hours for individual people but will gladly let anyone sleep who hasn't yet or after cooldown. Once staff removed a subject from SCP-5978-2, the effect did not wear off.
When animals were placed on SCP-5978-1 and SCP-5978-2 no effects took place. When an already sleeping person was placed on SCP-5978-1 and SCP-5978-2 hours ranging from 1-12 are added onto the person depending on how long they have sleeping totaling up to 9-12 hours.
The foundation acquired SCP-5978 from █████████, Ohio on December 8th, 2007 when a civilian was given a tour by a realtor of a home in ██████ on ████ , ████████ Road and was reported by the realtor, Mr. Jared, that Judith Sunheart (the civilian) went to the basement to test out the couches the previous owner left behind and fell asleep. The foundation took a week to secure SCP-5978 because of breaking the formation of SCP-5978, they finally came to the decision to make a laser incision underneath, essentially digging it up, hence the concrete block SCP-5978 is placed upon.
