Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to remain in secure storage at Foundation Site-19.
No personnel are admitted access to SCP-XXXX other than for the express purpose of further research and study. All Researchers requiring access to SCP-XXXX must submit in writing a subject access request to Head Researcher Dr. D. Wylde.
Personnel are required to have the assistance of at least 2 (two) other researchers whilst conducting their study and all experimentation is to be conducted in a secure room within the testing area of Site-19.
This room must contain accommodations so personnel under the influence of SCP-XXXX are comfortable whilst undergoing testing and personnel are not to be subjected to more than 36 (thirty-six) continuous hours under the influence of SCP-XXXX in a 7 (seven) day period. Personnel who have worn SCP-XXXX are to be administered Class C amnestics and allowed to recover under supervision of a senior researcher.
Withholding amnestics will be approved on a subject-by-subject basis and personnel must pass a psychological evaluation to continue being used in experimentation.
Under no circumstances will a researcher be allowed access to SCP-XXXX unless all conditions are met.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a plain, black headset resembling a flight helmet that covers the top portion of the wearer's head, eyes and ears. It bears no identifying marks and is of unknown manufacture. When worn, SCP-XXXX renders the user immobile, ceasing all gross and fine motor skills. Involuntary bodily actions continue, with some notable alterations:
- Heart-rate is reduced to ~14(fourteen) beats per minute - far below that required for peak metabolic function.
- Breathing is reduced to ~1.8 (one point eight) breaths per minute - far below that required for peak metabolic function.
- Internal waste systems - both digestive and metabolic - continue to function but produce no external by-product.
- Brain activity is increased to levels exceeding normal function in the Occipital Lobe, Temporal Lobe, and areas of the Parietal Lobe. Activity in other parts of the brain diminishes significantly.
SCP-XXXX was first discovered May 1984 in the storage room of █████████, a video & board-game store located in ██████, VT. Mr. ████████, the owner of the store, came upon SCP-XXXX whilst checking old and defunct stock. Having never seen SCP-XXXX before and not knowing how it came to be in the stock room, Mr. ████████ took SCP-XXXX home with him after closing to investigate the mystery item.
The exact circumstances leading up to Mr. ████████'s death are not fully known, but from Foundation investigations conducted since securing SCP-XXXX in July 1984, the likely sequence of events can be predicted accurately.
Foundation agents were made aware of SCP-XXXX upon learning of the death of a lone male aged ██, who hadn't been seen for 6 (six) days. He had failed to open his store or contact any of his employees. Subsequently, the local police department were despatched to perform a welfare check.
An embedded Foundation agent within the police department notified their superiors to a possible anomalous object.
Mr. ████████ was found emaciated and in the early stages of decay on the floor of his home in the town of ██████, VT. Mr. ████████ was fully dressed and wearing a device that resembles a small flight helmet. Foundation agents took possession of SCP-XXXX and the body of Mr. ████████ and administered Class B amnesiacs as necessary.
An autopsy was performed - the notes of which can be found in document XXXX-A-01
When placed on the wearer's head, SCP-XXXX immediately turns from inert to functional through an unknown power-source. It is surmised that this energy is drawn from the wearer's own electrical activity inside the brain. The wearer enters a catatonic state after 30 (thirty) seconds, where-upon the wearer's brain function spikes in the Occipital1 & Temporal2 Lobes, even though the wearer's eyes and ears are covered. Inside 5 (five) minutes, electrical activity increases exponentially in parts of the Parietal Lobe3, most notably the Sensory Cortex4.
Without intervention, the wearer will remain in a comatose state until their body can no longer function due to lack of sustenance, usually within 4 (four) days. The longest a wearer has remained in this state is 12 (twelve) days. Upon all brain function ceasing, SCP-XXXX loses power and returns to its inert state.
