SCP-5920's expansion bay.
Item #: SCP-5920
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5920 is to be kept in Safe-Class Containment Locker C at Site-37, along with all instances of SCP-5920-2. Access to SCP-5920 is not permitted without clearance from Level 3 personnel on duty. Testing of SCP-5920 is limited exclusively to material stored within the Site-37 Media Library, and permission must be obtained for each individual item used. Under no circumstances should researchers use any personal possessions to test SCP-5920 unless donated to the Foundation prior.
Description: SCP-5920 is a copy of Sonic & Knuckles, a video game for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive console. The cartridge is slightly warped, and the label partially torn, indicating heavy use from the previous owner. The code "██-████" is printed in small type on the backside. Despite being present upon recovery of the object, the code printed is consistent with internal [REDACTED].
Sonic & Knuckles is known for its “Lock-On Technology” feature, which allows the user to connect it to other Genesis games via an expansion bay at the top of the cartridge. This feature is where SCP-5920's anomalous properties manifest.
Upon physical contact with SCP-5920’s expansion bay, any DVD, CD, or other form of digital media will transform into an instance of SCP-5920-2. SCP-5920-2 are altered versions of the exposed media in which Knuckles the Echidna, a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, becomes prominently featured, usually taking on the role of the protagonist.
Transformation is not readily apparent; instances of SCP-5920-2 display no superficial differences from non-anomalous copies of the original media. Anomalous effects only become apparent upon using the media in its intended device. Repeated exposure to SCP-5920 has no further effect on instances of SCP-5920-2.
Experiment Log 5920-A:
Media: Non-anomalous Sonic & Knuckles cartridge
Medium: Game cartridge
Device: SEGA Genesis MK-1631
Results: Game title changes to Knuckles the Echidna in: Sonic & Knuckles. Knuckles is the only playable character and Sonic is absent from title screen. No other discernible differences from the original game.
Media: Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Medium: Game cartridge
Device: SEGA Genesis MK-1631
Results: Completely identical to when a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cartridge is connected to a non-anomalous copy of Sonic & Knuckles and played. Game title changes to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and the campaigns of both games are combined.
Media: Sonic the Hedgehog
Medium: Game cartridge
Device: SEGA Genesis MK-1631
Results: Game title changes to Knuckles the Echidna in: Sonic the Hedgehog. Knuckles replaces Sonic as the protagonist of the game and plays identically to how he does in future entries in the series. It is worth nothing that, under normal circumstances, it is impossible to play as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog. When a Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge is connected to a non-anomalous copy of Sonic & Knuckles and played, the user is taken to a lockout screen.
Media: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Medium: Game cartridge
Device: SEGA Genesis MK-1631
Results: Game title changes to Knuckles the Echidna in: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. Knuckles replaces Michael Jackson, and gameplay is largely the same other than Knuckles performing punches instead of high kicks. The "Michael" soundbite heard when children are rescued is changed to say "Knuckles." Despite this, all other voice samples are unchanged. Most researchers had difficulty keeping their composure while testing this game, and burst into laughter once Knuckles performed the "moonwalk" dance move for which the game is named.
Media: Half-Life
Medium: CD-ROM
Device: Dell Dimension 4300 with Windows 2000 Professional
Results: Game title changes to Knuckles the Echidna in: Half-Life. Instead of the series' popular protagonist, Gordon Freeman, Knuckles the Echidna assumes said role. While the shooter gameplay of the original is intact, the player is now able to use climbing and gliding abilities to gain vantage on enemies, and to take apparently new pathways through the levels. All levels tested seem to switch at the same points they would in non-anomalous copies of the game. Plot-wise, all references to Gordon are now references to Knuckles, but no other changes have been observed. Researchers seemed to be particularly attracted to this one, and when asked about this, their response is always along the lines of it being "the new Half-Life content they deserve."
Note: Dr. ██████ initially postulated that SCP-5920's effects could manifest in other forms of media besides video games. He then grabbed the first DVD, CD and book he found in the library and brought them back to the room for testing.
Media: Click
Medium: DVD
Device: Pioneer DV-434
Results: Film title changes as expected. Knuckles becomes the protagonist of the film instead of Michael Newman (Adam Sandler). Notably, Knuckles remains silent throughout the film and retains his "classic" appearance. Knuckles' insertion appears to be by way of CGI animation integrated into the environment. Instead of an architectural job like the film's intended protagonist, Knuckles' job is to protect a large jewel referred to by the character Donna as "the Master Emerald." This is consistent with his portrayal in most Sonic The Hedgehog media. Dialogue is altered accordingly and none of the other characters, nor their actors, behave as if anything is out of the ordinary. There is a recurring joke of Knuckles having trouble pushing buttons on the time-controlling remote properly due to his gloves lacking individual fingers.
Media: American Idiot
Medium: CD
Device: Audiophase CD-315
Results: All tracks on the album have their lyrics changed to be about Knuckles, or be from his point of view. Researchers compared these altered versions of the songs to the works of parodist "Weird" Al Yankovic. The following is an excerpt from the lyrics of the song "Jesus In Suburbia," provided in both their original form for reference and the alteration produced by SCP-5920.
Original:
I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus of Suburbia
The bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of
Soda Pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my
Sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones that I got away with
Altered:
Guarding this here emerald
I tell you man, it's getting old
But it must be done, even if it's not fun
The power it holds is too great
For that Egghead to control
He thinks that I have a thick skull
But he's wrong
I am very strong
Much more than Sonic anyway
Media: Of Mice and Men
Medium: Book
Results: The entirety of the novel's text throughout the 107 pages has been changed to read "No Way! No Way! No Way! No Way?" with the exception of pages containing copyright information. Among the normal copyright information, in small print, is the text "This book does not have blast processing." Request to test a CD audio-book of this title is pending.
