SCP-XXXX-1 during recovery
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a locked box. The box is to be kept horizontal and out of view, and at least 100 feet away from any room in which humans regularly sleep.
Signs warning against trespassing are to be posted around the perimeter of SCP-XXXX-1
All instances of SCP-XXXX-2 are to be kept in a livestock pen and fed regular rations of grass, grain, and protein meal.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a painting of seven cattle (Bos Taurus) standing in a field. Six of the cows are looking out at the viewer, while the face of the seventh is out of the frame of the image on the left. On the back of the canvas is a signature that appears to read "C. Troyer."
The anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX manifest when a human falls asleep in a room with SCP-XXXX hanging on the wall. While asleep, the subject will experience a dream that in some way features cows—not necessarily as the main focus of the dream, but present in some capacity.
If a subject sleeps in a room with SCP-XXXX for a second night, the dreams experienced become more consistent. Subjects will dream about drinking milk with another person. Subjects all report being unable to remember a description of the figure, though they are universally described as a reassuring presence. In all cases the dream involves drinking different glasses of milk in some kind of taste test. For a more detailed description of the dream, see Interview SCP-XXXX-B below.
SCP-XXXX-1 refers to a large field in █████, PA, the former site of a farm owned by Caleb Troyer. During the second night that a subject sleeps in a room with SCP-XXXX, an anomalous cow, designated SCP-XXXX-2, will manifest somewhere in SCP-XXXX-1. Due to the overgrown nature of SCP-XXXX-1, as well as potential anomalous obfuscation, the moment of manifestation has never been observed. At approximately sunrise in the morning, the instance of SCP-XXXX-2 will leave SCP-XXXX-1, and if unimpeded, make its way to the location of the subject. SCP-XXXX-3 instances seem to have an innate knowledge of the subject's location at all times and a single-minded determination to reach them. Once an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 reaches the subject, it will present itself and behave affectionately toward the subject, consistent with normal behavior for a Bos Taurus showing affection for a human. SCP-XXXX-2 instances will follow the subject anywhere they go. Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 never voluntarily stray more than roughly 600 meters away from their subject, but can easily be restrained and transported further, as they possess no anomalous strength or speed.
While instances of SCP-XXXX-2 look and behave like normal cows, the milk they produce is anomalous. When an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 is milked, the milk is not only immediately ready to consume without pasteurization, but also uniquely suited to the subject who activated their manifestation. Subjects who drink the milk report greatly enjoying the taste, and display increased health and vigor when drinking it regularly.
Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 have been known to produce milk with various percentages of milk fat, as well as milk with flavors such as chocolate or strawberry. While the milk most often resembles a variety of cow's milk, testing has shown the milk of SCP-XXXX-2 to in some cases be soy milk, almond milk, and other lactose substitutes when produced for a subject with lactose intolerance.
SCP-XXXX was discovered by the Foundation after an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 capable of producing chocolate milk was on display at a county fair in █████, OH, advertised as "Charlie the Chocolate Cow." After questioning the owner of "Charlie," Foundation agents administered amnesties and took the instance of SCP-XXXX-2 into Foundation custody. Agents eventually traced the effects to SCP-XXXX, which at the time was hanging on the wall of a bed and breakfast in ██████, PA, and located SCP-XXXX-1.
Investigation into the identity of C. Troyer led Foundation agents to Caleb Troyer, a dairy farmer and resident of █████, PA who passed away in 1993. His daughter, Melissa Troyer, was taken in for questioning.
Interviewed: Melissa Troyer
Interviewer: Agent Geller
Foreword: Troyer was led to believe she was in police custody.
<Begin Log, 3:02 pm>
Agent Geller: Please, state your name.
Troyer: Melissa Troyer. Listen, I'm not in trouble, am I? Am I under arrest?
Agent Geller: No, Miss Troyer. We just wanted to ask you a few questions.
Troyer: Uh. Ok. About what?
Agent Geller: Your father. Caleb Troyer.
Troyer: Really? Why?
Agent Geller: Your father was an artist, correct?
Troyer: Sort of. I mean, he was a farmer. But he liked to paint sometimes, yeah.
Agent Geller: What sort of things did he paint?
Troyer: Mostly just landscapes. He'd sit on the porch, or drive out into the field, and just paint what he saw.
Agent Geller: Including animals?
Troyer: Yeah. Sometimes when he was out in the field, the cows would wander over and watch him work. He'd paint them into the scenes if they stood still. Dad loved those cows, and I think they knew it. He could sit out there with them for hours. Cows are a lot friendlier than people realize, you know? Sometimes they're a lot like big dogs.
Agent Geller: What did he do with these paintings once completed?
Troyer: Well some of them he hung up in the house. The rest he'd take down to the market and sell them right alongside the milk and cheese. Didn't charge much. He said he had so much fun making them, anything else he got out of it was all gravy.
Agent Geller: I see. Did any of the cows on your farm ever exhibit unusual qualities?
Troyer: Uh…I don't think so. They were just cows, you know?
Agent Geller: Of course. Tell me Ms. Troyer, do you enjoy milk?
Troyer: Yeah, most of the time. Does the body good, that's what Dad said. But I don't know, maybe this is just rose colored glasses, but it never tastes as good as it used to.
Agent Geller: Could you elaborate on that?
Troyer: It's nothing. Just, when I think back to being a kid and drinking milk in the farmhouse, I remember being just about the best thing I ever had. I guess it was just a lot fresher than the stuff I get in the grocery store now.
Agent Geller: I see.
Troyer: Hey, um, if I'm allowed to ask, what is this about? My dad…he's been dead a while now. What kind of crime are you trying to ask me about?
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Melissa Troyer was was administered amnestics and returned to her home. Following this interview, attempts were made to track down the rest of Caleb Troyer's paintings. Thus far, eight paintings in addition to SCP-XXXX have been recovered, but none exhibit anomalous properties. The total number of works he produced is unknown.
Interviewed: D-4175
Interviewer: Researcher Brigham
Foreword: Interview was conducted after D-4175's second night sleeping in a room with SCP-XXXX-1.
<Begin Log, 1:40 pm>
Researcher Brigham: How are you feeling?
D-4175: Fine, I guess.
Researcher Brigham: Good. Can you tell me about the dream you had last night?
D-4175: Sure. I was in a field, somewhere. Lots of tall grass. And in front of me was a table, covered in, uh, glasses of milk. And there was a guy there with me.
Researcher Brigham: Can you describe this guy?
D-4175: Uh…not really. I don't remember, sorry. You know how dreams are.
Researcher Brigham: Of course. Please continue.
D-4175: The guy, he…I can't remember what he said exactly, but he told my to try the milk, so I did. I drank every glass. And after each one, he asked me how I liked it.
Researcher Brigham: I see. Can you describe the milk you were drinking?
D-4175: It was milk. Most of it was pretty good. There was even some chocolate milk, and other flavorsI remember strawberry and coffee for sure. Some of them tasted off, though. Like it was spoiled or somethinggone sour. And then others were almost too sweet. Or kinda nutty. Some of the flavors are hard to describe. But when it was over, I told him which one I'd liked best. And I don't know if I'd be able to do that in real life. I mean, I drank a couple dozen cups at least, I wouldn't be able to keep them all straight in my head. But in the dream I just knew. And then he took that glass and walked off into the field.
Researcher Brigham: And that was the end of it?
D-4175: That's all I remember before I woke up.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Foundation personnel tracked the manifestation and movement of the SCP-XXXX-2 instance created by D-4175's experience. When it neared Site-██, D-4175 was led outside under guard and allowed to interact with it. D-4175 was encouraged to try the cow's milk. Though he was initially uncomfortable drinking from an udder, after personnel provided him a glass he milked the cow and drank. He reported that it was delicious and refreshing. D-4175 was then returned to his cell, while the instance of SCP-XXXX-2 was placed in containment.
Addendum XXXX-A: Requests by several members of Site-██ to undergo exposure to SCP-XXXX have been denied. Seemingly harmless items always pose a risk of developing further anomalous properties. The milk of SCP-XXXX-2 should under no circumstances be ingested recreationally.
