Item #: SCP-5684
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5684 is contained in a 5m square cell lined on all sides with soundproof material. Any defects in or damage to the soundproofing are to be reported to maintenance immediately. The only persons allowed to enter the cell are those in charge of 5684’s containment and the heads of the Site ██. Any other personnel who enter the cell are to be removed and given Class A amnestics.
Any radio communications or intercom systems are to be kept at least 50 meters away from 5684’s cell and are not to be brought inside at any time. Biometric locks have been added to the doors after the incident with Dr. V██████.[Paragraphs explaining the procedures]
Description: SCP-5684 consists of two parts.
SCP-5684-A appears to be a man of Hispanic descent in its mid-twenties. It is 1.68m tall and weighs 77.1kg. It keeps its hair cropped closely to its head, similar to the styles common in military forces.
5684-A is in good physical health and despite a nicotine addiction, its lungs show no signs of damage. It also possesses great charisma, though this seems to be a consequence of 5684-B and is not reported in subjects that communicate with 5684-A indirectly, such as via keyboard or written letter.
Should 5684-A speak through any system able to broadcast audio, anyone near where the system would output becomes affected by 5684-B. This had been documented to function on intercoms, microphones, telephones and megaphones.
SCP-5684-B takes the form of anomalous music that 5684-A seems to be able to generate via unknown means. This music does not produce any measurable waves, and can affect those who could not hear sound. It seems to be broadcast directly into the minds of those within 2m of 5684-A, though it cannot penetrate soundproofing material.
The strength of the effects of 5684-B depends on the relative ranks of the affected individuals. D-Class and security personnel manifest the most powerful effects and those in charge of 5684's containment are seemingly immune to its anomalous effects. After the incident with Dr. V██████, it appears that if the individual's rank changes, then the anomalous effects of 5684 can activate if the subject has been exposed and not given amnestics.
Consistent Effects:
- Any subject interviewed after exposure to SCP-5684-B reports hearing a song they have great nostalgia for. This does not seem to have any consistent pattern between language, genre or time of creation. SCP-5684-A also seems unaware of what those exposed to SCP-5684-B exactly hear.
- The salivary glands of affected subjects begin to produce copious amounts of a thin black fluid. This fluid is composed primarily of the subject’s blood, as well as trace amounts of the Banisteriopsis caapi and Indigofera suffruticosa plants and the Haematoxylum campechianum tree. It seems to be odorless and tasteless and produces no ill effects when consumed.
- Some personnel, particularly Class D, are calmed in the presence of SCP-5684-A, likely due to SCP-5684-B. Once they leave the 2m radius however, they have a psychotic episode, either attempting suicide or assaulting everyone in their path as they seek out a particular target.
- In the case of D-████35, this involved causing a containment breach to track down the guard in charge of her cell block.
- In the case of Dr. V██████, this involved murdering Dr. Ortega with a pen.
Documented effects on Class D Personnel D-████35:
- Able to rip open the metal door to SCP-5684’s cell and used it as a weapon to cause a containment breach.
- Able to detect people through walls and was able to dodge gunfire within 1m.
- Required ███ rounds of ammunition to terminate and was seemingly immune to chemical weapons and sedatives.
Documented effects on Dr. V██████:
- Epidermis converted to chromatophores, including the presence of an anomalous organ to control them.
- Presence of Tapetum lucidum in both eyes.
Addendum 5684-1: D-████35 was placed into 5684's containment cell and instructed to report the effects of 5684-B. D-████35 spoke to 5684-A for ten minutes, with the two having a cordial conversation and no aggression shown on either side. When 5684-A was forced to the far side of the room to extract D-████35, the D Class became highly aggressive, tearing off the cell door and causing a containment breach. The exact effects have been noted above.
Addendum 5684-2: Dr. V██████ has been removed as the head of 5684's containment after the incident with D-████35. His notes on containment have been discarded and replaced with those recommended by Dr. Ortega.
Addendum 5684-3: Since his demotion within the project, Dr. V██████ has begun to display heightened aggravation and attempted to enter 5684's new containment cell multiple times.
Addendum 5684-4: Dr. V██████ has killed Dr. Ortega after undergoing anomalous mutations. He was reported to say "I can finally go home" before being terminated by security personnel.
Interviewed: SCP-5684-A
Interviewer: Dr. Ortega
Foreword: SCP-5684-A was placed inside of a soundproof box, and given a keyboard to communicate with Dr. Ortega, who had a microphone. It took several minutes for it to recover from sedation, after which it looked through the soundproof glass at Dr. Ortega and did not blink for the duration of the interview. Dr. Ortega was instructed to ascertain the nature and origin of SCP-5684-A’s anomalous effects.
<Begin Log, 6/18/20██>
Dr. Ortega: What do you remember about the events at [REDACTED]?
SCP-5684-A: Where’s the Doc I’ve been talking to? Seemed like a cold guy, but one I got along with.
Dr. Ortega: Dr. V██████ has been transferred off your containment.
SCP-5684-A: Kinda unfair to me. Also, why do I get a keyboard while you get to relay your dulcet tones over a microphone? This feels so impersonal.
Dr. Ortega: I am taking precautions that should have been taken in the first place.
SCP-5684-A: Are you guys still mad about what [D-████35] did? I didn’t even leave my cell.
Dr. Ortega: The Foundation is taking more rigorous precautions.
SCP-5684-A: What’s the matter? Such a fan of your bosses that you never want to leave?
Dr. Ortega: That’s besides the point. Now, what do you remember about the events at [REDACTED]?
SCP-5684-A: Food was shit. I knew [REDACTED] was ratfucking all the rations and selling the good stuff. Rifled through his things a few times. Oh, and the sand! It was terrible.
Dr. Ortega: So what happened the morning of ██████?
SCP-5684-A: Ah! So direct, Doc. I was doing my job, y’know. A little bit of this and that. Then Captain [REDACTED] brings me some intel I need to decipher.
Dr. Ortega: What was it?
SCP-5684-A: You know I can’t say that, Doc. It’s classified.
Dr. Ortega: What happened, then?
SCP-5684-A: I had to look at it to see what it was, y’know? Had to know it was the right intel. It was [COGNITOHAZARD EXPUNGED]. Beautiful.
Dr. Ortega: I see.
SCP-5684-A: You don’t. I can see that. Crack open the door, Doc. I can show you faster than I can explain.
Dr. Ortega: Just answer my questions, 5684-A.
SCP-5684-A: C’mon, now. You know my name is [REDACTED]. It’d be nice if you could use it.
Dr. Ortega: When did the music begin?
SCP-5684-A: I don’t know. Once I heard it, it felt like it had always been there. Like joining the [REDACTED] helped me not hear it. But then it was back. A glimpse of the intel made me hear the living tones in the world again.
Dr. Ortega: What do you mean by “living tones”?
SCP-5684-A: Just felt at home in my head to call it that. No cadences, just blood and bone and sweat. People playing until their fingers bled. It called to me. Called me home. I showed the others in my unit. Some understood, some didn’t. The weaker among us didn’t make it out of their bunks.
Dr. Ortega: What happened to them?
SCP-5684-A: I gotta spell it out for you?
Dr. Ortega: If you would for the record.
SCP-5684-A: Let’s just say a few people slipped on skull fragments on the way out. But anyway, the rest of us took the comms. I had to broadcast it. Show it to everyone. So we did. And then, well… Let me show you.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: SCP-5684-A broke one of its leg shackles and smashed the soundproof glass with its foot. Dr. Ortega fled the room and it was flooded with sedative gas to pacify 5684-A. Dr. Ortega reported feeling a sense of overwhelming nostalgia and frustration as well as hearing a song his mother liked before demanding Class-A amnestics.
