Photograph of SCP-XXXX taken during recovery

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a standard storage locker in site-17 along with a flash drive containing video logs concerning SCP-XXXX's creation. Usage of SCP-XXXX is strictly forbidden unless it is approved and supervised by someone with Level 4 security clearance or higher.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a Virtual Reality (VR) Headset of crude make and model. An inscription reading, "For I, E, and C" along with a heart can be found on the right side of the device. It has a single USB port connection, but requires no external device to operate.

When SCP-XXXX is worn and powered, the user is met with a blank screen. When the name of a sentient animal or human being is spoken aloud by the user, they convulse violently for a few seconds before abruptly stopping. The selection of acceptable responses is vast, including the deceased and characters of fiction. The user will then awaken in a trance, under the belief that the virtual reality is real. This includes the belief that they are the avatar they chose. This trance will continue until the user is removed via external means, or expires due to dehydration or starvation. The program consists of multiple different environments tailored to the choice of character the user made.

When SCP-XXXX is forcibly removed from the user's head, the effects do not cease. The user will continue to believe they are their avatar from the program. The consciousness of the user is completely and irreversibly replaced by that of the avatar.

Addendum: The following are transcribed video logs found on the site of recovery:

[A man is seen sitting at a desk, facing the camera. He is of average height, and is slightly heavier than average. He has short-cut brown hair and a pale, clean-shaven face. The room is poorly lit, though enough light is coming from a doorway to see that it is rather decrepit, though well organized. There is an unpowered computer monitor, along with miscellaneous electrical components on an adjacent table.]

Doctor Preston: Video Log #1, 4/7/13. Doctor Preston, head engineer of the "NewLife" project.

I finally found a way out of this god forsaken city. I have the idea, the means, and the drive to make a better life for everyone… [Sigh] or at least for my daughters.

Now I just need the resources.

Whelp, time to get to work.

Doctor Preston: Video Log #2, 4/15/13. Doctor Preston, head engineer of the "NewLife" project.

Wait, why do I say "head?" I'm the only engineer.

Nevermind that, the important stuff! I got the things! [He holds up various objects] An old broken headset and a few salvageable motherboards. It's not much but it'll do. Now I just need a few extra construction materials, and I'll be good to go!

I'm telling you, this is going to be legendary! Isabelle will absolutely love this. They'll all love it.

[The room is dark. A digital clock on a table reads "12:14." A small figure is seen in the doorway.]

Doctor Preston: Video Log #6, 6/25/13. Doctor Preston of the "NewLife" Project.

Finally got the ecological section done. This is really difficult but it'll… [He turns to the doorway] Emily! What're you doing up so late? C'mere! Yeah, hop up on daddy's lap.

[The figure walks to Preston and sits on his thigh. It is a young girl with short, curly black hair and brown skin.]

Emily Preston: What're you doing daddy?

Doctor Preston: I'm working on something, sweetie. Something that will change the world!

Emily Preston: How's the computer gonna change the world?

Doctor Preston: Well… hmm… Do you remember where I told you we lived?

Emily Preston: The Brocks!

Doctor Preston: That's right, The Bronx! And what do you always call it?

Emily Preston: Dirty!

Doctor Preston: Yup! It's a bad, dirty place. But what I'm doing on the computer here will make a brand new place to live! It'll be clean, and bright, and colorful, and fun! You can play and learn, and live the best life you can live, safe from the dirtiness of the real world. Doesn't that sound neat?

Emily Preston: I guess…

Doctor Preston: You guess… That's ok, you'll love it when I'm done. Oh! Look at the time! You gotta get to bed missy! Go on now. I Love you!

Emily Preston: I love you too. Goodnight daddy.

[The girl leaves.]

Doctor Preston: [yawn] Goodnight… Goodni…

[He yawns again before ending the recording.]

Doctor Preston: Video Log #14 5/30/14. Doctor Preston of the "NewLife" Project.

[A tall, slim girl walks past the doorway with a stack of textbooks in her hands.]

Isabelle Preston: You're not a doctor, dad.

Doctor Preston: Well they don't know that! [he gestures towards the camera, then rolls his chair to the doorway.] Hey come on in, don't you want to see what I'm working on? Aw come on, don't give me that look. Alright, fine.

[He rolls back to the desk.] Anyway where was I? Right, the procedural learning.

I am excruciatingly close to finishing the "sweeper" intelligence. It'll scan thousands sources across the web for information, allowing for the machine to generate new environments, avatars, and experiences without manual input! No more long hours making different kinds of Aardvark. Worst week of my damn life.

The point is, this wild ride might soon be over! Now I just need to do some debugging. And I think I have the best test subjects on hand…

Doctor Preston: Video log #18 9/02/14. Doctor Preston of the "NewLife" Project.

Little Claire is finally here! She just couldn't wait to see the world; She popped out 2 weeks early. I finally have a kid with my eyes!

Luckily, Isabelle and Emily can still play around with the headset while Barbra and I are occupied with the baby. They both keep saying that it's not "immersive enough," though I think Emily is only saying that to act like her big sister. Isabelle has take interest in all sorts of subjects that I never would have guessed would fit her. Astronomy, painting, and yes, even computer programming. I'm so proud! Emily on the other hand, only likes being that pop-star she loves so much. I'm not disappointed or anything! It's just… I wish she'd branch out a bit more, that's all. Oh well! Feedback is feedback, and I'll try my best to make it as real as I can.

For them.

Doctor Preston: Video log #21 12/29/14. Doctor Preston of the "NewLife" Project.

This is test #1 of the new and improved immersion feature. I've given the AI a broader scope to search for information with, allowing it to look in areas that are… harder to access. Legality aside, some of these archives have data that are impossible to get anywhere else! This should give more info for the machine to work with. Anyway, here it goes! Are you ready Emily?

[He steps aside to reveal the the young girl standing in the middle of the room. She is wearing SCP-XXXX.]

Emily Preston: Ready!

Doctor Preston: Alright honey, go for it!

Emily Preston: Yeah, Let's hit it! ██████ █████!

[She drops to the floor, shaking violently. Preston attempts to hold her steady.]

Doctor Preston: Emily! Emily, what happened, are you alright? Oh no no no! [She sits up suddenly.] Ok… Ok… Oh thank god. Can you hear me, sweetie? What do you see? [Preston turns to the monitor, now displaying video] I can see you're playing at another concert, I know you're doing something in there! [Sigh] Alright I'll give you some time to have your fun.

[Preston sits in a chair and watches the monitor for approximately seven minutes.]

Doctor Preston: Ok that's enough for now, lets get you out. [He pulls the device off of Emily.]

How do you feel sweetheart?

Emily Preston: [She looks visibly shaken and confused.] Aaah! Whe- What th- Who the hell are you?

Doctor Preston: Video log #22 12/30/14. Doctor Preston of the "NewLife" Project.

This is absolutely incredible! Emily truly believes she is ██████ █████! She talks like her, thinks like her, and certainly acts like her. It took a bit of effort, but I think she's calmed down enough to accept her situation. The effects will probably be temporary anyway. This. Changes. Everything. If I could improve this, I could sell it and make a fortune! The government might be interested in this kind of tech… and they would dish out as much as I ask for! We won't have to live, laugh and love in a virtual world, we could do all of those thing in real life. One big happy family, in a big house, on a big hill, with big prospects for the future! I can see it now. So close, I can almost ta-

[A sudden scream can be heard from another room. Preston leaves the chair and moves to the doorway.]

Doctor Preston: Babe? What happened, are you ok? Wha- What? What are you talking about?

[Preston is slumped over at the desk. His hair is longer and unkempt, and his lower face is covered in patchy stubble.]

Doctor Preston: Video log #- Who gives a damn.

We don't know where she went. We hoped the police would help, but all they really did was tell us, "don't worry, she's only a kid, she couldn't have gone far. She'll turn up soon" Yeah, sure. Idiots. She's an eight year old but she can think like she's twenty five! She could gone anywhere!

It was supposed to be her birthday today, ya know? Goddamn police are no help and Barb isn't exactly making things super peachy 'round here either. She says it's my fault, that I made the girls help me.

[He turns to the doorway and shouts.]

Like I knew it would happen!

[A girl comes into the doorway.]

Isabelle Preston: It is your fault, you bastard! Unless you can fix this, you're dead to me. Mom? Oh don't cry mom… [She leaves.]

Doctor Preston: I can fix it… I need to fix it. I need my babies. I need… I need another drink…

[Preston stares at the camera blankly. His hair is now dirty and clumps of it have been removed. He has a full beard, and a bruise under his left eye. The room is in disarray, objects strewn about the floor.]

Doctor Preston: It's been two weeks. Barbra up and left. Took Isabelle and Claire too. Didn't even leave a note. Bitch… [Sobbing] I-I didn't mean for this! I just wanted a-a better life for all of us… for you! Please… God… I'll do anything, anything at all, to be with them again. I want to see them, to make it right! Please. Please!

[He lays his head in his hands and cries for 4 minutes.]

Wait…

I… I can be with them again… I just need to… to…

[He gets up from his chair, grabs SCP-XXXX, and moves to the center of the room before placing it on his head.]

I'm coming. Daddy's coming home…

Richard Preston!

[He falls to the floor, convulsing for several seconds before suddenly stopping. The recording stops after 13 hours, presumably due to lack of sufficient storage space.]

Additional note: On ██/██/2020, an adolescent girl, approximately 12-13 years of age, was incarcerated for the attempted murder of the singer ██████ █████ in her home. The girl is now being held and treated at a professional psychiatric hospital in the area. She is to be under constant surveillance until further notice.

EDIT: The following is a potential rewrite of the plot of the video logs. Needs crit and help.

Video log plot overview:

First Log: Dr. Richard Preston films himself in a dark room in the middle of the night as he frantically explains that he has an idea to better his life, an invention that will change the world, or at least make him a lot of money. He gives a vague explanation to make an expansive virtual world that is a replica of our own, allowing anyone to live their perfect life, whoever or whatever they want to be. (This takes place in 2013, when VR is not as mainstream)

Log 2: Preston, now calmed down from the previous night is starting to reel in his ambitions. He still believes it is a great idea, but starts tailoring it towards his two daughters. Thinking it could have more of an educational and exploratory purpose. Living in The Bronx has been hard on all of them, and he feels their futures are grim in their current state, so he hopes they can be educated and nurtured in a safer environment. He begins to look for materials, and wants to continue these logs.

Log 3: We jump ahead in time, and Preston is well into development at this point. He begins to express concern on the grand scheme of the work he is undertaking when his wife Barbara (35), and youngest child Emily (6) come in. Barbara expresses concern and barades him for working on one of his “projects,” suggesting this has happened in the past. He explains that this time will be different, he’s not doing anything dangerous, and his scope for the outreach is small, specifically making it for the kids; He is a different man now. Barbara agrees to let him continue, and Claire expresses interest in the device before they leave as Preston continues to work.

Log 4: Preston, fed up with the slow progress of creating environments and player avatars manually, begins working on an AI program that will do it for him, sweeping the internet and public access databases for information to develop new content. He ends the recording by remembering that it’s his turn to cook dinner, making homemade mac-and-cheese, Emily’s favorite.

Log 5: Preston is extremely impressed with what the AI is capable of, and hints of his greater ambitions begin to seep through, in the form of him dubbing the device “The NewLife Project,” though he attempts to not let it get the better of him. He is now confident it is ready to be shown to his family, nearing completion. He is very excited for their reactions.

Log 6: Preston is happy with the device, but his daughters had their criticisms. Isabelle (16) thinks it’s not immersive, and, while proud of her father, wishes he would focus on supporting them in more financial ways. Emily loves it very much, looking up to her father, though she similarly wants it to be more realistic, noting her favorite singer is incorrectly portrayed. Preston states he wants to make sure the program is complete; He doesn’t want his daughters to be dissapointed, but he also doesn’t want his time to end up wasted.

Log 7: Another late night for Preston. He begins to doubt the device and his abilities. He struggles with the fact that it won’t have the impact he wanted it to, even just in his family’s lives. Preston debates whether or not to double down on the invention, going back on his promise.

Log 8: Preston has a new daughter, Claire, which is a good reminder for Preston on why he’s doing this. He wants, needs to make a better life for them, and he’s willing to do anything to make that happen.

Log 9: Preston reveals he has improved the system. By updating the AI to run deeper searches into more restricted databases, it will output more refined content. He admits the information comes from shady sources, but insists that it’s harmless, and the data gathered is more than worth the risk. He’s tested it on himself and is astounded. It is more magnificent than anything he could imagine. Emily comes into the room wanting to play with the headset, and Preston promises it will be ready soon, ensuring her it will be better than ever before.

Log 10: Emily is seen wearing the headset, with Preston standing by, waiting eagerly to see her excitement. He gives her the go ahead, she says the name of her favorite singer, and falls to the floor. Preston rushes to help her, but she sits up straight moments later. He turns to a nearby monitor, seeing she is performing at a concert. Preston is relieved, but takes the device off to make sure she is completely alright. She expresses great fear and confusion, now having the consciousness of the singer.

Log 11: Preston is completely astounded by what he’s created, now completely absorbed by thoughts of the power he holds. He could sell it to any large government, corporation or group, or even keep it for himself for whatever he wants. He makes it clear he is concerned for Emily, though he notes that they have gotten her to calm down and that he’s sure the effects won’t last long. Preston continues to fantasize about his soon-to-be rich lifestyle when suddenly a deafening scream is heard from another room. Preston rushes out to see what is wrong, and comes back a minute later to stop the recording with a fearful look on his face.

Log 12: Preston sits dumbfounded in front of the camera. He explains how Emily has run away, and they have issued an official missing persons report. He is not hopeful that she will be found, thinking she is dead or miles away. He exasperatedly tries to plead his case to nobody in particular, rambling about how none of this was supposed to happen, that it’s not his fault.

Final Log: Preston is now in complete disarray. His hair is messy and has patches of it missing. He has alcohol, pills, papers, and electronics strewn about the room. He is breaking down, rambling about how his wife has left after an “incident.” He continues to deny that it’s his fault, and insists it can be fixed, despite not hearing anything from Emily. He eventually collapses, sobbing, begging for a way to fix it. In a sudden moment of morbid clarity, he grabs the device and places it upon his head. He says aloud that he can’t wait to see them before shouting his own name and collapsing, before sitting up straight a few moments later. The recording continues for several hours before a female figure enters. She sees Preston on the ground and calls someone, telling them of his state. She is told something, prompting her to hang up and walk to the camera, revealing it is Isabelle. She angles the camera down, and engraves the foundation logo and a second unknown symbol into the desk before leaving. The recording continues for several more hours before stopping due to lack of sufficient storage.

Addendum 1: Preston was found to have been expelled from Fordham University for excessive misuse of campus equipment, and nefarious dealing with undesirable groups.

Addendum 2: A young girl attempted to assassinate a famous singer, and was then admitted into a psychiatric center. She is now under Foundation surveillance.

Addendum 3: Isabelle Preston has no known birth records, and when Brabara Preston was questioned about Isabelle, she had no recollection of her existence.
