SCP-XXXX in stage 1 while in containment.

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Elucid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be placed 11m off the ground in the geometric centre of a 22*22*22 meter containment chamber. Except for during testing, any partial and/or complete 3D human analogues1 (regardless of size) and D-Class personnel with any biomedical implants are not allowed within SCP-XXXX’s containment chamber. Staff with any biomedical implants are forbidden from entering SCP-XXXX’s containment chamber. Any unneeded instances of SCP-XXXX-a and are to be incinerated at the conclusion of testing or otherwise. Staff are advised not to attempt to wear SCP-XXXX except under testing circumstances. When removing SCP-XXXX from test subjects, all instances of SCP-XXXX-a and under its effects must be moved to outside of a 10m radius of SCP-XXXX.

Any staff conducting testing with SCP-XXXX in stage 2+ are required to restrain test subjects to prevent damage to SCP-XXXX. If SCP-XXXX enters stage 3, it must be allowed to progress to stage 4 in order to prevent damage to SCP-XXXX. Any personnel wishing to handle SCP-XXXX should be wearing fine cotton gloves and a full fine cotton face mask to prevent any damage to SCP-XXXX. Staff are reminded that SCP-XXXX is over 600 years old and should be handled accordingly.

Description:
SCP-XXXX is a mask from the Japanese Muromachi2 period constructed from brass with human hair being used in the construction of a beard and eyebrows. The Mask depicts the traditional Noh theatre character “Okina” or “The happy old man”. Symbols resembling Japanese kanji line the entire inner surface of the mask. Translation efforts are currently ongoing.
SCP-XXXX’s anomalous effects manifest in XYZ stages:
Stage 1: SCP-XXXX’s idle stage. Stage 1 occurs whenever there are no full or partial human analogues within a 10 meter radius of it. In this stage SCP-XXXX is effectively a 600 year old mask.
Stage 2: Occurs whenever any full or partial human analogues enter within a 10m radius of SCP-XXXX. Analogues (henceforth known as instances of SCP-XXXX-a) attempt to locomote towards SCP-XXXX regardless of ability to reach it, or obstruction to SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX-a can manifest anywhere in a 10m radius of SCP-XXXX. Instances of SCP-XXXX-a will continue this behaviour until they are moved to a displacement of 10m away from SCP-XXXX.
Stage 3: Occurs whenever instances of SCP-XXXX-a should attain SCP-XXXX. All Instances of SCP-XXXX-a will violently attempt to place the mask on the nearest available living human being. Instances of SCP-XXXX-a have been observed to exert forces in excess of 1500N in stage 3, if this is above the material strength that the instances of SCP-XXXX-a are constructed from this will make them incur damage.
Stage 4 : Occurs whenever SCP-XXXX is worn by a live human (henceforth referred to SCP-XXXX-b). It should be noted that stage 4 of SCP-XXXX’s manifestation can be reached without having to enter stages 2-3. When SCP-XXXX reaches stage 4 a single, seemingly random, instance of SCP-XXXX-a will continue anomalous function while all other instances will immediately cease function. The instance of SCP-XXXX-b will lose any conscious control of their body and instead the instance of SCP-XXXX-b will be able to control the one remaining instance of SCP-XXXX-a as it if were his/her own body. In stage 4, the instance of SCP-XXXX-a can operate at any distance from SCP-XXXX.

Since the properties of SCP-XXXX in stage 4 are desirable for various foundation containment efforts, it has been proposed for use in research and containment of SCP-3008, SCP-015, SCP-093 and various other Keter class SCPs.

Addendum: The play that the mask is from, Okina, has 2 masks used in its performance (the Okina Mask, and the Sanba-sō mask) however only the Okina mask has been found. Efforts to locate the Sanba-sō mask are ongoing.

Recovery: SCP-XXXX was discovered by lost hikers who activated their emergency beacon after becoming trapped in a previously undiscovered cave residence on Mt. Yarigatake. The residence is quite substantial, being estimated to have been able to house over 120 persons. Before the discovery of SCP-XXXX the residence was an archeological site, however the difficulty in translating any of the texts located at the site (they are written in the same symbols as that on the inside of the mask), the uncharacteristically high number of pacemaker failures and one archeologists prosthetic leg manifesting SCP-XXXX-a properties, caught the attention of foundation agents working at the university administering the dig site. Class A amnesiacs were administered and a misinformation campaign was started.

Through the use of sonar imaging, a hidden chamber was discovered underneath a Noh theatre stage located at the south eastern edge of the cavern. Inside were a collection of 5 crude mannequins dressed in almost completely degraded traditional japanese silk attire and 2 carved stone pedestals with SCP-XXXX resting upon the right pedistal and the second pedestal bare.
