Item #: SCP-

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP- is to be contained within a locked steel safe protected by both electronic and physical combination and password locks, the passwords and combinations of which are to be changed on a weekly basis, or immediately if any suspicion of containment breach is deemed a threat by any level 3 or level 4 personnel assigned to SCP-. This safe must be contained within a room of any size with only one entrance, guarded by no fewer than three armed guards. All testing is to be carried out with all personnel who are not active test subjects in the adjacent research room containing camera feeds from each corner of the room. If, for some reason, it becomes necessary to enter the containment area, blindfolds are to be applied, and not removed for any reason.

All personnel assigned to SCP- will undergo mandatory psychological evaluations every two weeks, and are to be reassigned if they present any signs of obsessive behavior related to the object, including becoming obsessed with effective containment. Any personnel tasked with containment of SCP- who present new ideas for "more effective" containment solutions are to be detained, questioned, and reassigned. The only personnel whose "suggestions" may even be considered are level 4 personnel who have been working with this object for over one year and have retained stable mental conditions throughout the entire period. No changes to these containment procedures are to be made without approval from at least two O5 council members and the current lead researcher of this object.

All essential personnel who become instances of SCP-████-1 are to be observed at all times by at least 3 personnel. If D class personnel are used, there must always be at least one armed guard with them to ensure they do not become violent towards the subject. Terminations of these D class may be delayed, at the request of the subject, if they show exceptional obedience and are not likely to attempt to harm the subject.

Description: SCP- is an obsidian tablet, upon which is carved an elaborate design which appears to depict several religious figures from an unknown culture engaging in what appears to be a ritual, though the nature of this is unknown. It was discovered following reports of a cult living in the mountainous region surrounding █████████, Canada, with Foundation agents being prompted to investigate after rumors in the town about instantaneous death at the hands of these cultists.

The object's anomalous effects manifest when any human subject looks directly at SCP- for any amount of time. At that point, the human subject becomes an instance of SCP-████-1. Instances of SCP-████-1 do not suffer any immediate effects(unless they were alone when viewing SCP-), but the next time they are unobserved by a human subject, they instantly(See Addendum ████-B) suffer massive bodily trauma that is fatal in almost all cases(see Addendum -A). This trauma includes but is not limited to, complete and instant exsanguination, the breaking of several to all bones in the body, the removal of one to all of the internal organs, or the complete removal of the skin. The latter has occurred in approximately █% of cases.

An SCP-████-1 looking at him or herself in a mirror will not prevent the effects of SCP-. However, any other human observer will prevent the death of the SCP-████-1 instance. Blinking does not cause the death of the SCP-████-1, however, an observer(if only one is present) intentionally closing their eyes does. There are currently █ Foundation personnel who are instances of SCP-████-1 being kept alive due to their value to the Foundation.

An SCP-████-1 instance seems to be vaguely aware of the nature of their condition, preferring to be in the company of others, and growing apprehensive and urgent when an observer appears to be either about to leave or cease observing them. While they are not aware of what will happen when they are left unobserved, they do not want it to occur and will even become violent to prevent it. This awareness, coupled with the likelihood to still be in close proximity to SCP-, can become dangerous, as observers are likely to be exposed to the object as well.

SCP- appears to have a psychological effect on some of those around it. It appears to result in a growing compulsion to view the object. It has been determined that this effect is memetic in nature, and not simply a result of curiosity. Those affected are compelled to attempt to gain access to the containment chamber of SCP- and view it. They may hide their efforts under the guise of "revising" containment procedures.

SCP-████-2 are the entities presumed responsible for the deaths of SCP-████-1 instances. Interviews with SCP-████-1 instances after their events provide a rough description of SCP-████-2(See Interviews -A-C). SCP-████-2 is said to be several humanoid entities, described as being over 3m tall, with arms from their shoulders to the ground. They appear pure black, even in a well-lit area, with no distinguishing features other than those mentioned.

The remains of SCP-████-1 instances are non-anomalous and may be disposed of according to standard protocol.

Note that recordings and photographs of SCP-████ are non-anomalous and can be safely viewed.

Addendum -A: Of the estimated ███ SCP-████-1 instances, only two have survived the event. Both occurred in Foundation custody, however, the first, former Agent ███████ █████ went into shock, followed by a coma, and remains comatose in the medical wing of Site-██. However, the second remained alive until her scheduled termination(pushed back two months to continue monitoring before it was determined that she was non-anomalous after the initial event occurred). See Interview -A for a transcript of an interview with the subject after she stabilized.

Interview ████-A:

Interviewer: Dr. █████

Interviewee: D-48579, former SCP-████-1

Dr. █████: Good morning, D-48579. This interview will be conducted in order for us to gain some knowledge of your experience with SCP-████.

D-48579: You mean that hell hole? Those creatures? Do you have any idea what they did to me?

Dr. █████: We have… some idea, yes. (Pause) What can you tell us about what happened to you?

D-48579: You had me look at that fucked up carving, and I felt fine, but the other D… you made him leave. And I was screaming and begging and pleading and I didn't know why but you didn't listen, and you made me suffer through hours and hours and… and… (D-48579 gets up apparently with violent intent, and is restrained)

Dr. █████: Can this interview continue?

D-48579: (Spits on the floor) Don't act as if I have a choice, you [REDACTED], and oh boy, then I'd love to [REDACTED] scared? Gonna cry? Good. That's nothing compared to what I went through, you [REDACTED] your fucking feet.

Dr. █████: If you refuse to cooperate, you will be terminated.

D-48579: (Laughs) Trust me, if you'd been through what I have, you'd want to be killed.

Dr. █████: I never said we won't do it again. Now, you can cooperate, or you can go through it all over again.

D-48579: (Silent for 43 seconds, when speaking resumes, it is done quietly and meekly) What do you need to know?

Dr. █████: You need to recount as much of your experience as possible.

D-48579: O-okay. As soon as the other D couldn't see me, I was just instantly somewhere else. And I'm not sure how to describe it. It was bright, and dry, and flat, and red. But I couldn't pay a lot of attention to that. For what felt like a half hour, these things assaulted me. They were tall, like 9 feet tall. They had these long arms, really long. And they were all black. It was bright but they were pitch black. And they broke bones, they tore skin, they hurt me in places I didn't even know could hurt. But then something stopped them. There was [DATA EXPUNGED] showed up back on the floor of that testing room. I know they meant to kill me.

Dr. █████: Thank you. That's all for today.

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Addendum ████-B: It has been discovered that the injuries sustained are not instantaneous. Due to the claims made in Interview ████-A, several D class personnel were exposed to SCP-████ and then left unobserved while wearing watches. In the first █ tests, the watches were broken upon recovery, but in the last 2 tests , the watches displayed a time elapsed of ██ and ██ minutes.

Note: For the record, I'd be willing to check this out, because I'd retain my memories, but the O5s told me "What if they take 963? You're an idiot, Bright." Blah blah blah. Whatever. I still think it was a clever idea.
