SCP-IQ376: The Intelligence

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Despite extensive research into the matter, all methods thus far postulated for the containment of SCP-IQ376 have proven unworkable. The foundation has determined that by its very nature, any attempted containment SCP-IQ376 is fundamentally impossible.

Description: The exact nature of the entity SCP-IQ376 is not currently known. Based on historical records and current research, the Foundation has classified IQ376 as a “Hazardous Non-Malevolent Esoteric Entity”.

Elements of IQ376 have been identified on every major land mass, often forming within continental substrata. These elements form the only known observed material presence of IQ376, and manifest themselves in the form of expansive networks of threaded Mycelium*, forming long complex subterranean systems. Tentative assessment suggests that these systems are in fact interconnected, and are linked at greater depths than can be currently explored. These networks appear to span throughout the entire subsurface of the planet.**

The exact nature of these threads has yet to be determined, however circumstantial evidence acquired during incident TS-RP67*** suggests the potential presence of a type of cognitive sentience within the greater network. However, whether SCP-IQ376 is truly conscious, or if it has any kind of awareness at all, has also yet to be determined.

Addendum IQ376-1a: The material tentatively designated “Mycelium”, due to it’s close resemblance to fungal hyphae, has been identified as a semi organic, semi-mechanical network of metallic micro threads. The material composite forming these threads is constructed into an ultra fine weave, and has demonstrated the capability of weaving through most any known substance.

Often forming sprawling matrices in rock stratum, it has only been observed to reach the surface in select areas. Although direct correlation is impossible to determine with any degree of confidence, all areas where Mycelium reaches within four meters of ground level appear to display heightened levels of plant growth. Analysis of samples taken indicate the presence of minor to moderate genetic modifications within these localised flora outcroppings.

Ongoing research into Mycelium has been hampered by the materials tendency to rapidly decay when severed from the network. It has been observed that entire matrices have been seemingly severed from the greater system whenever Foundation contact teams attempt to collect samples. This is believed to be a defence mechanism, however the full intricacies of this mechanism are not yet understood.

Thus far the material has been observed at seventeen separate sites administered by the foundation. In addition a compiled list of potential historical records relating to contact with the material has been compiled and made available in attachment IQ376-R2.

Addendum IQ376-1b: The full depth that individual systems of Mycelium are capable of reaching is a continuing strain of ongoing research within the Foundation. This research includes an investigation to try and establish whether a potential connection to any kind of centralised point of origin exists within the larger network.

Recent seismic surveys taken while investigating SCP-PL68308, have revealed the presence of an object within the mantle previously believed to be a crystalline geode. Data collected from tracing attempts of Mycelium networks however seem to suggest this object as a potential source point of the entire global network. This source however sits some thirteen hundred kilometres below the surface of the planet which consequently rendered more detailed study impossible.
