“You wanna know what sucks? Look at any skip where something catastrophic happens. Any of ‘em. The action report always says something along the lines of “through the timely use of personal flame units, the breach was halted” or “the arrival of a MTF team was sufficient to prevent further damage”. But is there any mention of how that stuff got there? How the MTF showed up so conveniently? Never!”
He paused in his rant to down a glass of something potent. He slammed the cup back onto the table, and sighed.
“Look, I’m not bitter, I just wish we got some acknowledgement. It’s not like we’re just working in a standard warehouse job… We just don’t get any respect from the rest of the facility.”
The onlookers, their badges and ID cards attesting to their status as Site-19 staff, looked at him with a mixture of emotions ranging from concern to amusement.
The speaker looked down at his own ID, and seemed to sober up a bit. He mumbled some excuses about the drink, the hour, and the change of location, and stumbled out of the canteen.
George Dweyer leaned back in his new chair, in his new office, and spoke to his new coworker: “So, Therie, gimmie the quick rundown on what I need to know here.”
Therie turned her head away from her spreadsheets and glanced at George, “Well, Site 19 isn’t much different from the average Site. Considerably bigger, but that’s why we have nine staff members instead of the standard four to five, and we alway have at least three on duty at any time. Combine that fact with the fact that most of the anomalies stored here are Euclid and Safe, and you have an ideal place to train new Active Loggers.”
“Like you”, she added.
“The facility is broken up into various wings and departments, which you will obviously need to memorize and familiarize yourself with.” Therie dropped a copy of the Site-19 directory onto George’s desk, “Alongside that, you’ll need to be familiar with all tactical resources stations,” another book landed on his desk, “this list of specialized Mobile Task Forces,” a thick binder was added to the pile, “the documentation for all communication standards within the foundation”, two stapled stacks of paper, “all Foundation medical supplies and their uses, including amnestics and mnsestics,” three more binders, “and all military technology the Foundation is capable of fielding, including anomalous and esoteric hardware.”
George laughed weakly, “Oh, is that all?”
“For now, yes.”

“It’s simple.”
“It really isn’t.”
“Well, the concept is. The execution isn’t, but that’s why we do it, and get paid well to do it.”
“It isn’t fair then.”
“It is. Loggers are better paid than most security staff, and better protected. Even the most badass MTF member knows that letting you get killed significantly decreases their chance of survival. You know what the mortality rate for the Foundation’s site personnel is? Five percent per year, twelve if you include stationed MTF units in that count. Loggers, however, lose less than one percent annually.”
“I still wish we got more respect.”
“I’ll take not dying over being respected.”
