Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX currently resides whithin the Garamba National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. SCP agents have been inserted within the park security and upper administration staff in order to reduce public interaction with and poaching attempts of SCP-XXXX.
Any victims of an SCP-XXXX-A event are to be collected and appropriately dealt with by Foundation agents embedded within park staff.
Plans to humanly capture and transport SCP-XXXX are being developed. See Addendum XXXX-1
Attempts to establish meaningful communication with SCP-XXXX-1, in an effort to convince SCP-XXXX to enter containment are ongoing. See Addendum XXXX-2
Mobile task force 9TP (Ivory Towers) is to maintain a covert force around SCP-XXXX and direct Foundation agents embedded within park staff to intercept any civilian crews and poaching team. Use of deadly force and amnestics are authorized on a case by case basis.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a herd of Loxodonta africana (African bush elephant) within the Garamba National Park. With the exception of SCP-XXXX-1 and the connection to the SCP-XXXX-A event, all individual subjects of SCP-XXXX seem non-anomalous.
SCP-XXXX was first brought to the attention of The Foundation in 19██ when park staff reported a group of poachers found dead due to exhaustion near within the park. The report indicated that the individuals were well supplied and in close proximity to an abandoned camp site. No ammunition had been spent and no signs of attack by wildlife prior to death was apparent. A Foundation agent working in the country at the time received word of the report, but took note that several locals seemed unsurprised. When pressed, these locals invariably stated that "Everyone knows you don't try to hunt elephants around there." Further information could not be gathered from these individuals and a research team was dispatched. Upon arrival, the staff members who made the report were interviewed and it was determined that the only possible target for poachers at the time of the report was SCP-XXXX. Surveillance of SCP-XXXX was then ordered.
Several weeks later no anomalous behavior or reactions to researchers had been observed. However researchers became aware of a new group of poachers tracking SCP-XXXX and the decision was made to allow them to proceed. What followed was the first observed instance of an SCP-XXXX-A event.
Event SCP-XXXX-A is triggered when any individual begins to take hostile action against take hostile action against or attempt to capture any member of SCP-XXXX. The individual and all members of their team will suddenly become motionless and docile. Shortly after, all effected will will drop all objects being held and turn in the direction of SCP-XXXX-1. Subjects will then fall to the ground and begin uncontrollably weeping. Subjects will be unresponsive and the state of emotional distress continues until death for varying lengths of time dependent on intent, up to and including death. Upon the triggering of an SCP-XXXX-A event SCP-XXXX-1 will turn in the direction of the individual that caused the event and all other members of SCP-XXXX will begin to move move away from the area. Once all members of SCP-XXXX have left the general area, SCP-XXXX-1 turn and follow them.
SCP-XXXX-1 is a large, elderly female elephant. Despite the clear signs of advanced age when discovered, no further signs of physical deterioration have been observed in the decades following.
Addendum XXXX-1: As a measure to both contain SCP-XXXX and to prevent further exposure and potential discovery, a non-lethal capture procedure was devised. Enough shipping containers designed for transporting elephants were placed in an area likely to be passed by SCP-XXXX. Fruits and other food known to be enticing to elephants were placed in the containers in an effort to coax the animals inside. When SCP-XXXX entered the immediate area of the containment sight the order was given to open the container doors. At that time, all members of the containment team underwent an SCP-XXXX-A event. A backup team, designated the task of assisting the members of the containment team if this event took place moved in. Containment team members were administered mild amnestics with negative results. The containment team was loaded on to vehicles and driven away from SCP-XXXX with the hope that distance might negate the effects. Members of the containment team became responsive and emotionally balanced, though exhausted, at differing intervals after this, ranging from several minuets to several hours. When a secondary attempt was made using live feed cameras and remote controls from a near by headquarters yielded similar results, it was concluded that attempts to capture SCP-XXXX resulted in a non-leathal form of SCP-XXXX-A. Mobile task force 9TP was then assigned the mission of preventing asmuch human contact with SCP-XXXX as possible, until a more secure containment procedure could be established.
Addendum XXXX-2: Upon hearing a news report of a group of rhino poachers killing each other after successfully downing large rhino in Kenya, Dr. ██████ began to suspect that effects similar to SCP-XXXX may be spreading to other endangered species. Dr. ██████ sent a request to her superior explaining that the telepathic nature of the SCP-XXXX-A event may mean that communication with SCP-XXXX-1 was possible. At her request, she was allowed to approach SCP-XXXX-1 and attempt to communicate with it. Below is a transcription of the interaction Dr. ██████ had with SCP-XXXX-1. Dr. ██████ spoke aloud during the interaction and recorded any mental images or feelings that could have been from an outside source, and provided situational examples to help convey the interactions where appropriate.
Dr. ██████ approached SCP-XXXX-1 slowly and noted that SCP-XXXX-1 turned to face her, watching her approach until she felt she was within range to speak.
Dr. ██████: Hello.
No response
Dr. ██████: Can you understand me?
A feeling of humorous indifference. Dr. ██████ notes that it was the same feeling she had when a loved one realized they were doing something to upset her that she hadn't actually told them was bothering her.
Dr. ██████: How old are you?
A feeling of utter exhaustion.
Dr. ██████: You understand we want to help you?
A feeling of condescending rejection. Similar to the emotion felt when frustrated with a task and offered help from someone incapable of assisting.
Dr. ██████: We will not force you to accept our help. We know we can't. Are there others like you?
A feeling of familiarity or deja vu.
Dr. ██████: Is there anything we can do to make you believe we can and will help?
SCP-XXXX-1 lets out a low rumble and turns away to continue grazing. Dr. ██████ reports a sense of sorrowful disbelief, similar to when a loved one promises repeatedly to change harmful behavior.
This interaction made it clear that some level of communication is possible with SCP-XXXX-1 and Dr. ██████ has requested further sessions as she believes that it may be possible to convince SCP-XXXX to enter containment. These requests as well as proposals to identify similar anomalous entities is under reveiw.
