Item #: SCP-4437
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4437-1 is to be kept in a 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 meter containment cell with a ceiling composed of glass. A feed from 3 standard cameras and a hi-speed camera is to be watched constantly, with observers on rotations of 4-hour shifts. All requests from SCP-4437-1 require approval from at least 3 on-site members with level 3 clearance or higher. Any and all signs of plant life detected within forty meters of Biological Containment Site 37 are to be destroyed by incineration.
Should a request from SCP-4437-1 to go outside be approved, SCP-4437-1 is to be accompanied by two remote-operated drones, each armed with a small flamethrower. Any requests from SCP-4437-1 to be outside longer than twenty minutes are to be denied. Between the time of 1 week before the start of March and 1 week after the end of July, all signs plant life within 3 kilometers of containment are to be incinerated and all ventilation connected to SCP-4437-1's cell is to be heavily filtered and monitored for traces of pollen.
While testing is taking place outdoors, at least twelve trained guards armed with flamethrowers and terrariums of Reticulitermes flavipes are to be stationed in a circular pattern around SCP-4437-1 to prevent possible escape. In the case of a breach while SCP-4437-1 is indoors, Researcher Rachel Oak is to be given access to the Site’s intercom system immediately.
Description: SCP-4437 is an anomalous entity hive-minded disease that spreads through physical contact and affects all organic material. It has been deemed extremely contagious despite its current containment. This disease has proven to have many similarities to SCP-299. These include:
- Infected plant material becomes black and extremely resistant to impact.
- Plant material, especially trees, seem to be the easiest for SCP-4437 to completely infect.
- The easiest method of terminating infected instances of SCP-4437 is through incineration.
- SCP-4437-1 has been documented to sprout white flowers.
SCP-4437 is not widespread; It currently is limited to a single human host, designated SCP-4437-1, hereafter referred to as “Specimen.” Specimen is a human male of presumably Middle Eastern and/or Hispanic race, approximately 1.8 meters in height, and has proven to be sapient and perfectly capable of speech. Through unknown methods, its sclerae have become black, with irides an unnatural shade of brown. Specimen is presumably the last surviving animal host of SCP-4437; See Interview Log 1 for more details. Specimen has to date made no containment breach attempts following Test 4437.2-2[[footnote See Addendum 4437/3.[[/footnote]].
Addendum 4437/1: Specimen was captured by foundation personnel in ██████ Forest in California, on 9/██/20██. This caught the attention of The Foundation when footage of the fire showed the smoke to be thick and white, and the fire itself to be a vivid crimson. Specimen was caught attempting to escape the forest and apprehended 2 kilometers from the edge of the forest. Incident 4437.1 occured approximately 2 hours after Specimen was brought to Site 37.
Incident 4437.1: Specimen's first attempt to break containment. According to personnel, Specimen produced claw-like growths at the end of each finger and began to relentlessly slash at the door to its cell for 45 minutes. Though unsuccessful in its attempt, it led personnel to install a hi-speed camera for further examination of such transformations.
Interview Log 1: Interrogation immediately followed installation of the hi-speed cameras. Witnesses of Incident 4437.1 claim that Specimen was shouting and vocalizing frustration throughout its breach attempt, and Agent B█████ was tasked with interrogation.
Interviewed: SCP-4437-1/Specimen
Interviewer: Agent B█████
[Agent Oak approaches the door to the cell. The door has been modified with a shielded microphone and speaker for two-way communication.]
<Begin Log>
B█████: Can you hear me?
Specimen: Alone…
[Agent B█████ begins to take notes on a clipboard.]
B█████: Why did you attempt to breach containment?
Specimen: Dark… Sun… Need…
B█████: Can you understand what I’m saying?
Specimen: Yes…
B█████: Why did you attempt to breach containment?
Specimen: Fire… Lots of fire…
B█████: The forest was on fire when you were brought into containment, yes. Was that where you lived?
Specimen: Where We lived…
[Camera footage shows Specimen curled up on ground.]
B█████: “We”?
Specimen: *We** was before… Now after fire… Just me…
B█████: The rest of this “we” died in the fire?
Specimen: Yes… Gone…
[B█████ takes more notes on his clipboard.]
Specimen: Dark…
B█████: Were the trees part of this “We?”
Specimen: Yes… All the green was black… Rabbits, deer, the fish… All connected… Now alone…
B█████: The entire forest went up in flames. Was that white smoke from others like you?
Specimen: Yes… Fire is dangerous to me… [Specimen yawns loudly, shivering.] I need more…
B█████: More? More what?
Specimen: More sun! More US! Can’t be just me… Need… To spread… [Specimen falls silent, stands up and slowly walks to the wall opposite the door. After standing still, facing the door. 5 seconds pass.]
B█████: …Hello?…
[4 seconds pass. Specimen makes a sprint towards the door and throws its full weight at the door in attempt to escape.]
[B█████ jumps, startled.]
B█████: What are you doing!?
Specimen: Let me see the sun! Please! [Specimen shows signs of desperation as it bangs its fists on the door.]
B█████: [B█████ raises an eyebrow.] Permission to begin testing?
Specimen: What?…
<End Log>
Synopsis of Test 4437-1 Specimen was detained and brought outside into the sunlight. Specimen ceased attempts to struggle once outside, becoming visibly calmer and began presumably sleeping After approximately 20 minutes, Specimen “woke up” from this state and attempted to seize the nearest D-class personnel. Specimen was quickly brought back to its containment cell and the contaminated D-class was placed in quarantine to possibly reveal if Specimen Specimen and SCP-4437-2 Instances makes “more” through physical contact.
Discovery and Classification of SCP-4437-2: The quarantine of D-33927, was recorded and documented.
[00:05:14]
D-33: I’m starting to get sore…Ow…
[Agent Rachel Oak enters at 00:07:29]
Oak: Tell me what you’re feeling.
D-33: Besides this overbearing sense of loneliness? I’m feeling really bad. Not that you care, you’re just here to write it down.
Oak: I’m here to confirm that this is the method that SCP-4437 uses to infect. If it is, we’ll have to reclassify 4437 to the disease itself, and designate the Specimen as -1.
D-33: I couldn’t give less of a shit. My stomach feels like it’s being ripped apart…
Oak: Give as many details as possible, please.
D-33: [sarcastically] Ooooohh, well since you asked nicely! [D-33 groans and leans against the wall.]
Oak: Anything besides the stomach?
D-33: I feel like my bones are throbbing… My arms, my ribs… And I’m getting shooting pains in my fingers and toes.
Oak: Any pain in your eyes? Or skull?
D-33: No. Why, should I be?
Oak: We have no idea what should and shouldn’t be happening.
D-33: Fuck you. Leave me alone.
[Oak is instructed to leave the observation area. D-33927 was left alone for the remainder of observation.]
[00:34:16]
[D-33 begins to pace back and forth, tapping his fingers on the wall in to erratic rhythm.]
D-33: Oh god, I can’t take this much longer… I’m scared, guys… And lonely…
[D-33 continues to pace back and forth for 45 more minutes.]
[01:20:13]
D-33: Oh god. Okay, I’ve been able to handle the pain up until now, but this is too much…
[D-33 lays down on his back, groaning and wincing in pain. His eyes have become noticeably darker.]
[After approximately 30 minutes, D-33 groaning ceases and he falls completely silent. He stands to his feet.]
[01:50:40]
[D-33’s eyes are completely black.]
[01:54:36]
[Long, black shards of material extend from the tips of each finger. D-33927 is hereafter referred to as an instance of SCP-4437-2 (Any infected entity other than Specimen).]
[02:00:03]
[Researcher Oak reenters the observation area.]
Oak: …D-33, can you hear me?
At this point in the log, Specimen/SCP-4437-1 lifted its head (Specimen had previously been pacing around the containment cell), as if suddenly detecting the SCP-4437-2 instance. Specimen began to pound at the wall in the direction of SCP-4437-2. SCP-4437-2 turned towards the direction of Specimen and exhibited the same behavior. After approximately 8 minutes of this behavior, SCP-4437-2 began to show signs of desperation. SCP-4437-2 rapidly underwent a transformation similar to Specimen during Incident 4437-01 and began to claw at the walls, attempting to reach SCP-4437-1. With each slash at the walls, SCP-4437-2’s chipped and cracked. SCP-4437-2 had significantly less success than Specimen at damaging it's containment unit, despite the quarantine having weaker walls than a containment cell. SCP-4437-2 was incinerated.
Upon analysis of the broken shards from SCP-4437-2’s claws, the material was noticeably [REDACTED] and brittle. SCP-4437-2 was shouting, demanding that he “Go outside and see the sun.” It was at this point that parallels between SCP-4437 and SCP-229 began investigation. Research dedicated to the possible connection between these two anomalies is currently underway, with cross-testing pending approval. Approximately 1 week after Specimen’s initial containment, it was interviewed a second time upon request by Researcher Rachel Oak.
Interviewed: Specimen
Interviewer: Researcher Rachel Oak
<Begin Log>
[Specimen is seen at the start of the interview leaning against the wall to its containment chamber, facing where D-33 was quarantined and incinerated. Specimen is sobbing.]
[Researcher Oak approaches the containment chamber. Specimen gains awareness of her presence before she begins speaking.]
Specimen: Why did you burn him!? Just like all the others… Burned…
Oak: How did you know of D-99’s presence?
Specimen: I can sense others… Others that are like me…
Oak: But only when they’ve become completely infected.
Specimen: That makes them like me! You made me alone again!
Oak: How did you know D-99 was male?
Specimen: We connected. And now he’s dead. [Specimen kicks the wall when it says "dead."]
Oak: Which begs the question of how did you know he was burned?
Specimen: I can feel it, dammit! [Specimen slams his fist on the wall.] When the trees burn, I feel it! Everything that happens to us, we feel it! But there are none left! Only me!
Oak: You seemed excited when SCP-4437-2 manifested itself.
Specimen: I didn’t feel alone… I felt better! Less scared! Family… Comfort…
Oak: So you feel more calm with other infected instances around you.
Specimen: Yes! Do you not understand!? [Specimen presses body against the containment door.] I need to make US.
Oak: You semed reasonably calmer when D-99 became infected.
Specimen: Because I wasn't alone… When there are more, I feel safer…
<End Log>
Addendum 4437/2: Testing has shown a direct correlation between the presence of living SCP-4437-2 instances in Specimen’s vicinity and its behavior. Specimen becomes more “normal” when in the presence of more and more living SCP-4437-2 instances. As such, Specimen has been allowed to have 2 plants in its cell: One Echinocactus grusonii, and one Ranunculus asiaticus. This change to Specimen’s containment has yielded positive results. Since the addition of these two plants, which Specimen was permitted to infect, Specimen has shown to be significantly calmer, and even become contempt with his containment.
Addendum 4437/32.5: Over the course of containment, Specimen has begun to show signs of a sort of evolution. Skin has become darker, most likely due to integration of SCP-4437. Additionally, Specimen has begun to show a tendency to identify itself as not only a host, but as the disease itself; This has been noted as a rare instance of SCP-4437 not expressing what could be classified as “hive-minded tendencies.” These speculations were further supported when Specimen requested to “Have a name, like the others I talk to.” Given access to a small database of first names, Specimen chose a name it thought suitable. Specimen is to be personally addressed as “Corey.”
Addendum 4437/3: Several tests were performed to test infection of SCP-4437, including:
- D-70724, who only spoke Russian.
- A 15 x 15 x 15cm cube of birch wood.
- A pig (To compare test results with SCP-299).
- 2 red roses.
- A sheet of type C, double wall cardboard with width and length identical to a sheet of standard AA4 paper.
Testing Log 2
This is a culmination of seven tests that happened successively over the course of 5 days. Tests are numbered 4437.2-1 through 4437.2-7 to signify subsets over a single testing period dedicated to SCP-4437’s infection abilities of different organisms.
Test 2-1:
Subject: 1 D-class personnel. D-70724 was only capable of speaking Russian.
Results: When Subject became an instance of SCP-4437-2, Specimen expressed excitement and was permitted to converse. When the two were put in containment, Specimen tried to communicate with Subject, but was met with failure due to language barriers. Specimen made multiple attempts at vocal communication, and began experimenting with gestures and what could be described as “an improv sign language.” Both Specimen and Subject grew increasingly frustrated.
Notes: Specimen has shown that it must utilize the communication of its host, despite any anomalous perception of other SCP-4437 instances. -Researcher Oak
Test 2-2:
Subject: A cubical block of birch wood, measuring 6 inches on every edge. Termites were exposed to the wood to see if they would become instances of SCP-4437-2.
Results: See below.
Excerpt from Testing Log 2-2:
Oak: Okay Corey, infect the cube of wood.
Specimen: It was alive once…
[Specimen takes block of wood and holds it in its hands. The block quickly starts to become black. Once approximately half of the block is black on the exterior, the termites begin to crawl out of the block. None of them seemed to exhibit signs of infection.]
Specimen: TUNNELERS!
[Specimen throws the block to the ground and starts to wipe its arms in attempt to rid itself of the termites as it shouts expletives.]
Oak: They’re only termites, Corey. Calm down.
Specimen: Tunnelers! Termites! They bore themselves into me and make me weak! They consume my insides!
[Specimen begins to ███████ █████ █████ ████ ███ ████ and claw at the ground in attempt to exterminate the termites.]
Notes: It was decided that termites of any kind were to no longer be used in testing, and instead incorporated into containment procedures.
Test 2-3:
Subject: A pig (Sus domestica) (For the purpose of observing similarities to SCP-299.)
Results: Subject began to squeal and thrash uncontrollably for 4 minutes after exposure, until it fell to the ground and rolled onto its back and remained tense and unmoving. After 3 hours, subject began to relax and soon righted itself, becoming the first observation of what was later designated as an instance of SCP-4437-2B. The pig was non-hostile and immediately began to act as if Specimen had domesticated it.
Notes: It seems that SCP-4437 is able to subdue animals to minimize injury to the host before it it able to be reinforced with SCP-4437. This does not manifest in human subjects for currently unknown reasons. -Researcher Oak
Test 2-4:
Subject: A red rose, plucked less than 5 minutes before testing.
Results: The rose quickly became an instance of SCP-4437-2. Its petals turned a dark crimson, and the stem became black, with leaves doubling in size. Thorns on the stem had no distinct mutation and were infected the same as the stem.
Notes: SCP-4437 seems to infect different kingdoms of life in distinct ways. Requesting permission to create designations for different kingdoms when they become infected with SCP-4437. -Researcher Oak
Test 2-5:
Subject: A red rose, plucked and dried.
Results: Rose quickly became infected with a material nearly identical to what SCP-4437 uses to reinforce its hosts.
Notes: Corey referred to this material as “darkite.” While very unprofessional, I propose we use this term to refer to this solid that SCP-4437 creates. -Researcher Oak
Test 2-6:
Subject: A sheet of type C, double wall cardboard with dimensions identical to a sheet of size A4 paper.
Results: [REDACTED]
Notes: SCP-4437’s solid matter will now be referred to as darkite. Requesting further testing for possible use as ballistic resistance. -Site Director M█████
Addendum 4437/4: Proper and Full SCP-4437-2 Instance Denomination.
SCP-4437-2: The designation for any infected SCP-4437 instance other than Corey.
SCP-4437-2A: A plant-based host. These plants remain stationary unless acted upon by an outside force and show no signs of autonomy aside from normal growth and development associated with plant life. The larger the plant, the easier it is for SCP-4437-1 and -2B/C instances to detect at an increasing distance; most often trees exhibit this effect, however it can also be achieved by tight clusters of several smaller instances. SCP-4437-2A instances are stationary; They do not move on their own.
SCP-4437-2B: A non-human, animal host SCP-4437-2. Depending on the animal infected, SCP-4437-2B pose varying threats. Animals that are generally non-hostile will remain non-hostile, however all instances of SCP-4437-2B that were aggressive before infection will become hostile towards intelligent non-infected life. However, these tendencies will only trigger defensively.
SCP-4437-C: A human host, excluding Corey. SCP-4437-C have only been created thrice in testing. 2 times out of 3, SCP-4437-C will attempt to reach SCP-4437-1 by any means necessary. The one exception to this rule instead made an attempt to communicate with personnel. Instance was immediately incinerated for fear of a possible second instance of SCP-4437-1.
SCP-4437-2D: A fungal instance of SCP-4437-2. Similar to SCP-4437-2A, SCP-4437-2D makes no autonomous movement except for typical growth like any other fungus.
Addendum 4437/5: Throughout the course of containment, Corey has become increasingly trusting of Researcher Oak, now referring to her as a friend. Oak has been instructed to not reciprocate this affection, but also to not deny him this feeling of closeness and familiarity, as this idea of friendship has proven to be one of the most effective methods of containment. Oak has, however, voiced that she enjoys speaking and testing with Corey.
Addendum 4437/6: On 02/██/20██, Specimen began to alter its behavior. Overall motor functions slowed, and Specimen was observably calmer than normally documented. Upon examination, Specimen had begun to grow several thin vine-like structures along its scalp, dotted with small white flowers. For testing, Specimen was brought outside, where he [REDACTED], causing all involved personnel to be immediately put into quarantine. All those quarantined either were completely unaffected by the pollen, or exhibited symptoms typical with allergic reactions that were deemed non-anomalous. Investigation into whether Specimen utilizes plant-like asexual or animal-like sexual methods of reproduction has been denied.
