Farberto (Legend of the Foglight)
rating: 0+x

Item #: SCP-5645

Object Class: Keter (formerly Euclid)

Special Containment Procedures: Research indicates that Farberto is intelligent, and extremely difficult to harm. Local legend dictates that Silver is the only way to harm Farberto, however reports also back that the Beast will shy from Fire. Though it is not confirmed if Silver is the only way to harm the Beast, or this is just in line with traditional Werewolf lore. It is to be noted that SCP does not classify Farberto as a Werewolf, or Werebear, as his apparent genealogy would dictate, because the SCP can not confirm if Farberto was ever human. If and when captured, Farberto will be transferred to our "Were-animal" division none the less.

Description: An urban legend native to a small island off the east coast of Virginia, called Broy Island, Farberto is a creature that the SCP Foundation has been investigating for almost three decades. Farberto is currently believed to be at large, the SCP Foundation had previously dismissed the case as fraudulent superstition when last looked into in 1988, during the "Fall of 88' Massacre." However, a recent case of a missing boy on the Island has led to a reopened investigation nearly three decades later. Farberto is supposedly close to 500 years old, perhaps older, as sightings of Farberto go back to the 1700s. Farberto is described as a Bear with the spine of a man, large claws and grey eyes that glow in fog.

The eyes of Farberto are reported to glow in the dark, and shine off fog. This has led to a saying by island locals, to "Beware the Foglights." The SCP believes that the glowing silver or grey eye myth is the 500 years of cataracts on the Beasts eyes. Deaf, and nearly Blind, Farberto is said to have excellent smell. Once he decides to track his prey, he will never stop. Farberto is believed to go into hibernation for long stretch's of time. These stretches are based on the amount of food, bodies, he is able to store. If he has a bad harvest of human meat, basically if the island is not visited by anyone, he can go into absurdly long hibernations while he waits for food to arrive. This data is backed by population trends on the Island and also contributes to the difficulty SCP has had in locating Farberto. Broy Island is believed to be honeycombed with a deep cave network that was used by religious zealots back in the Colonial period, and bootleggers in the 20th century, and has not been fully mapped. Farberto is believed to have made his Den in these catacombs.

Sightings

Below are the only known contemporary sightings of Farberto. Note that most sightings are in the fall or winter, SCP believes there is a correlation to the Weather and Farberto, strongly tied to fog. Note the July 88 exception which SCP believes was caused by Farberto being awoken early from hibernation by accident, leading to the "Fall of 88' Massacre." Also note that sightings tend to be separated by long stretch's of time, making investigation difficult.

-December 1919: Islands namesake owners, Broyhills, move to build an Estate on the Island so that they can run the Lighthouse. During construction, several foreman go missing at night.

-September 1924: Family reports several sightings of a shadow in the fog with glowing silver eyes. Family dog goes missing.

-December 1924: Reported sights of shadow figure become more frequent. Family begins to sleep in their home made bootlegging panic room whenever heavy fog sets in. This ends sightings by the family for many years to come.

-November 1970: Local Fisherman, Jared Morrin age 53, reports to mainland papers that he see's a shadow figure shaped like an upright bear, walking through the fog when his boat passes the Island Lighthouse in the early morning.

-July 1988: T-Rex Utility Company reports missing Technician, Branden Karnell, sent to repair underground gas leak.

-October 1988: SCP Agent dispatched to Broy Island to observe and confirm Farberto after Utility Company incident becomes Public. Reported back negative sighting, but note that Agent did not arrive at pickup zone for extraction. Agent is listed as MIA.

-October 1988: Reports by a young Lighthouse Wickie, Name-Retracted, of a personal encounter with Farberto. This is the strongest testament currently of Farberto. She is the only living person to supposedly encounter the creature up-close, and leave the Island. Most current data on Farberto is built off her interview of questing by the SCP.

-December 1988: Island resident owner and caretaker, John Broyhill, is missing and nowhere to be found.

-November 2020: After three decades of vacancy, a new family moves into the Manor on Broy Island. A member of the Family, a young boy named Bo, was playing in the woods a month after the family moved in, and now is reported as missing. The Nany reported a large shadowy figure with glowing eyes in the fog and was able to get a picture with her cell phone. This incident sparked renewed investigation by the SCP.
