Item #: SCP-6234
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: The containing cell for SCP-6234 has a wall that consists of two glass panels with a gap between them of no less than 4 inches. That gap must be a vacuum. The glass must be monitored at all times via a security camera. If a crack appears in either panes of glass, a blast door must be lowered over the glass, and the glass must be replaced while wearing specialised hazmat suits.
Description: SCP-6234, codenamed Gaslit, is a collection of a gas burning lights of varying size and colour, and extensive tests have shown the lights can not be turned off or put out. Gaslit was found in an abandoned house in █████████. Interviews with the neighbours reveal that the house was owned by a family of 3 before they disappeared 2 weeks and 4 days before the collection team arrived. It was also revealed that prior to their disappearance, there was yelling coming from the house, and the police were called under the premise of domestic violence. When the police arrived the house was empty and there was no evidence of a domestic disturbance.
It has been noted that SCP-6234 not only produces light, but some people report it produces the smell of burning gas. Those who can smell the gas all had pre-existing medical conditions and those who have reported smelling the burning gas produced by Gaslit also report a list of other symptoms. Those symptoms include a feeling of euphoria, the feeling of floating and a numbness in the toes and fingers. Medical tests ran on those who were exposed to the smell produced by SCP-6234 showed that the people who could smell it all suffered from medical issues that were then cured after coming into contact with the smell. A member of the collection team was cured of the common cold, another was cured of stage 2 colon cancer and a member of the original testing team's pinkie finger on their left hand regrew.
30 minutes after the initial contact with the smell Gaslit produces, a new list of symptoms accurse in the exposed. This list contains being quick to anger, a want to pick up and carry a part of SCP-6234 and the ability to detect medical problems in those they talk to. Those affected call their ability to detect medical problems as "smelling imperfection". Over the 2 days after their initial exposure to the smell, the symptoms become worse. Those exposed show near superhuman levels of aggressiveness and strength when attempting to acquire a part of SCP-6234 to hold. A member of the test team who were exposed to the gas manage to punch a hole in the panelling of SCP-6234's original container, which lead to Gaslit being moved into its current holding cell. 2 days after the initial contact with the smell cause by SCP-6234, those affected die of asphyxiation. The bodies then turn to ash, as if burning. Keeping the body in a vacuum or other environments in which fire should not sustain itself does not prevent the body from turning to ash. Once the body has turned to ash, a new gas light becomes part of SCP-6234. A test was carried out to see if holding a member of SCP-6234 would prevent the affected person's death, this was not successful and the affected person still died of asphyxiation.
SCP-6234 has been classed as safe to examine due to the preventable conditions that must be met before being able to smell SCP-6234. Scientists believe that if SCP-6234 is to be reverse engineered it could hold cures to previously uncurbable diseases, but attempts to deconstruct a member of Gaslit shows that they are resistant to all attempts to damage or deconstruct them. Observing SCP-6234 through the glass from the observation room is safe, as the vacuum prevents the smell from getting out of the room. Anyone who wishes to enter the room with SCP-6234 must undergo a full medical scan to detect any medical issues. If no issues are found then access is granted to the holding cell. As an extra safety measure, a hazmat suit designed to filter air and remove smells is provided in case the scan missed a medical issue.
Addendum: An Interview with a Member of the Collection Team
Interviewed: Member of the Collection Team that retrieved SCP-6234 (codenamed Member 5)
