Object Class: Safe Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Site-9-40-L small scale lunar base and containment site was built around SCP-XXXX at the lunar coordinates of 3█° █′ █″ N, 15█° ██′ █″ E. Site-9-40-L has a dome of reinforced glass and filled with all-nitrogenous atmosphere (it was built around the object), a Foundation-standard laboratory, underground living spaces, a control tower and a landing site. On the site no lethal weapons are allowed due to the nature on the object.

Twice a week SCP-XXXX has to be connected to site's circuit for five hour. Also once a day SCP-XXXX needs at least one hour of speeking time with any of the site's crew via radio on the ██,█ kHz frequence to prevent changes in object's behavior. If needed, maintenance must be held.

Every personel entering containment dome of SCP-XXXX has to wear Type-87 light space suit.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a slightly modified German Type IXC/40 long-range diesel-electric attack submarine with no existing pennant number. Modifications include changing original anti-aircraft automatic guns to double-barreled ones, cut-outs from the conning tower and an unique dazzle paint between the deck gun and the heavy anti-aircraft gun's platform, including conning tower.

The submarine shows humanoid intelligence. It's able to make contact with humans via radio (using parts from German radio, newstreel and cinematic broadcastings from 192█ to 194█¹) and signal lamps (using international Morse-codes). SCP-XXXX refers to itself as "Grete Freiwald".

The object is able to sense it's ambience by "sensory organs": attack periscope resembles eyes, radio both resembles ears and provide her ability to communicate. There are no counterparts for the organs of tasting and smelling. However, the ship's sonars and radars are intact and could used as additional sensors.

In contrast with the being of a submarine, SCP-XXXX's behavior and reactions are pretty humanoid. Dr. Keller, her previous psychologist diagnosed a twisted personality. The effects of it could be reduced if the object is allowed to communicate with the crew of Site-9-40-L, also the crew is encouraged to do that. Because of this, SCP-XXXX's nature is one of the best known in the Foundation.

The object is harshly against wars. It doesn't want to go back to the Earth² because the wars on it and will sense lethal wepons in it's ambience, however, it's still unknown how does it's sense them.³ Also, shows no interest in containment breaching, but since it is a sapient object, it is in the Euclid category.

Addendum No.1

Discoverity and research of SCP-XXXX

After the World War Two, the Foundation, to prevent the USA and the Soviet Union from the acquire of the unknown anomalous objects that could be in the space, also started an own space program⁴.
The main milestones for the containing of SCP-XXXX were these:

• November 5th 1956: the Foundation's Canopus-1 experimental probe became the first human-made object in space, 11 months ahead of the Soviet Sputnik-1.
• December 17th 1957: Foundation's Antares-3 lunar fly-by probe was launched with the task of taking photos from the far side of the Moon. Three days later it began to transmit the photos;
• March 13th 1958: a large, cigar-shaped object was spotted on the No.████ photo of Antares-3 by Junior Researcher Julius K. Unzeitig. The photo was taken from the ██████ Crater and it's ambience.
• Januar 9th 1959: launch of Antares-9 lunar orbiting probe. This probe had large enough cameras to determine the nature of the "Object-58-6-L" which was unknown at that time. Antares-9 became the most succesful probe from the twelve of the Antares-series: it worked till 1968 (ultimately was destroyed by an asteroid) and the number of photos shot by it was over 17 000.
• April 3rd 1959: Object-58-6-L was confirmed as a Type IXC/40 submarine, also reclassified as SCP-XXXX.
• May 7th 1959: Junior Researcher Unzeitig was promoted to Researcher and also became the leader of Project Bachstelze (named after Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 Bachstelze rotary-wing kite used on Type IXC submarines). The goal of Project Bachstelze was to establish a lunar conatining site around SCP-XXXX.
• April 1st 1961: launch of Antares-12 contact probe, Betelgeuse-4 lunar landing probe and Kušuḫ-4 lunar rover (named after Hurrian lunar deity). After three days, Betelgeuse-4 landed with no problem, approximately 150 meters from SCP-XXXX. Although the rover broke down after 80 meters and was not able to reach the object, it provided enough information to confirm SCP-XXXX as Safe object.
• Between 1961 and 1966, only Antares-9, 11 and 12 observed SCP-XXXX. The object showed no activity.
• October 4th 1966: the Foundation's Máni-5 (named after the Norse god of Moon) spacecraft became the first manned lunar orbiting spacecraft.
• May 29th 1967: Máni-7's landing on the Moon, 13 months ahead of Apollo-11.
• January 6th 1968: Máni-9's landing module, the "Wagtail" has landed 60 meter from SCP-5XXX, achieving the first landing on the far side of the Moon. The crew, D-10783 (commander) and D-10672 (lunar module pilot) approached the object and inspected the state of it.

Taurus What is the state of the object?

D-10783: In two words: very sad. It looks like as if it had a crash-landing, or something like that… There are impact signs all around the bow and fore and there is a hellish big opening in the side, wide as my palm and around ten meter long.

The mesaurements showed no anomalous radiation around SCP-XXXX.

In 1975, Project Bachstelze's build-up started around the object. Along with it, more complex measurements occured. The measurement of electrical resistance was the main cause of the Incident XXXX-1.

After the "surrender" of SCP-XXXX, the object handled over all of it's ammunion and torpedos in exchange of the containment and overhaul. Since then, SCP-XXXX never tried to breach containment.

Timeline of Incident XXXX-1

The incident occured on 15th August 1975 and resulted in thirty-one (31) deaths. Further investigations and interviews with SCP-XXXX convinced the guilt of Researcher Hamvas about the measurement and the unnotification of rotating propeller. SCP-XXXX along with expressing regret about the deaths of Foundation-members stated that "she was scared when she woke up and tried to defend herself".

• 05:16 GMT 15th August 1975. Researcher Hamvas instructed D-12618 to connect electric cables to the fore and the stern of the ship.
• 05:40. Hamvas opened the low-transition hatch to test the system. The portboard propelled started to rotate with 3 degrees per seconds. It went unnoticed that time, was spotted later on video tapes.
• 05:43:20. After succesful testing, Hamvas raised the level to test electric resistance.
• 05:43:35. Rotate speed of portboard propelled raised to 25 degrees per seconds, also the leftover rudder started to flapping.
• 05:43:39. Attack periscope bursted out from it's place and made a full rotate in 5 seconds. Hamvas cut down the electricity, but it was too late.
• 05:43:52. Deck gun turned in the direction of control tower and opened fire. In less than a minute the tower collapsed, killing twenty-two (22) person, including Researchers Hamvas, Oller and Fowler and Agent Markusson.
• 05:44:00. Main alarm broke out after SCP-XXXX's anti-aircraft guns (two 2 cm Flak C/38 and one 3,7 cm Flak M42U automatic guns) started to fire on everything around. Additional five (5) personel died when several shots from the 3,7 cm autocannon struck a nearby Type 74 lunar crane which destroyed parts of the makeshift drydock around the object.
• 05:44:37. SCP-XXXX noticed an orbiting craft, the Nannar-9 (named after the Sumarian god of the Moon) and, as later explained, mistook it with a British bomber. It got several hits from the anti-aircraft guns and crashed 15 miles away, resulting in additional four (4) deaths, including Site-34-L's Vice Site Manager Dr. Blákovics.
• 05:47:00. After the destruction, SCP-XXXX ceased firing, restriction movement only for the periscopes.
• 06:12:37. Numerous distress signals (on radio, signal lamps and even signal flags) were received by surviving Foundation personel, stating that it was a misunderstanding and the object pleaded for forgiveness. The signaling continued for 67 minutes, after that SCP-XXXX run out of power and shut down.

Addendum No.2

Interview XXXX-1

Interviewed: SCP-XXXX, via radio frequency ██,█ kHz.⁶

Interviewer: Dr. Keller, psychologist.

Foreword: This is the first interview after the so-called surrender of SCP-XXXX. "She" asked for it. Since we don't know much about the nature of the object, we have to do further investigations in it's psychology.

<Begin Log, 10:00 GMT 26th September 1978>

Dr. Keller: SCP-XXXX, good morning. How do you feel yourself now?

SCP-XXXX: Hello, sir… Strange, very strange. I mean, thank you for my overhaul again, but I don't know how could I describe… Something like if I've got prostheses, I suppose. And what about you?

Dr. Keller: Fine, thank you. I would like to know some informations about you in beginning.

SCP-XXXX: Then go ahead.

Dr. Keller: First of all: what is your pennant number?

SCP-XXXX: (confused) Excuse me?

Dr. Keller: I mean, you are a Type IXC/40 large ocean-going diesel-electric attack submarine. You must had a pennant number back on Earth, for example U-505.

SCP-XXXX: (laugh) Oh, you got me wrong. Back on Earth I was not a submarine. Allow me to introduce myself: Grete Freiwald, born in 192█, died in 194█, both in ████. I don't know how I ended up here, but I'm totally sure I was human.

Dr. Keller: I see… You say you were a human. What happened with you?

SCP-XXXX: Since they said you are a psychologist, I have to tell you everything, right? So… I commited suicide in 194█. Not because the bombings. My groom, Karlhans (Karlhans Gustav von ███████, captain of U-███) disappeared on the Atlantic, at least they said that. I was really sad and I felt that he died, so I wanted to follow him into Heaven or Hell. I know that it's not a good solution, but I had no other choise.

Dr. Keller: How did you… reborn as a submarine?

SCP-XXXX: I have no idea: my first memories and for a long time the last ones as well were that I felt cold. I mean, really cold. And I felt like I'm falling. When I opened my eyes… periscopes, sorry, I was in a freefall - I think that I was resurrected on an orbit around the Moon. You can see from my… structural failures (laugh) that I had a pretty hard landing.

Dr. Keller: Thank you for the answering. Do you have any questions?

SCP-XXXX: Only one: did they found him?

Conclusion and aftermath: SCP-XXXX is well aware of her state and is in peace with it. "her" groom's submarine was never located, but the last picture depicting it showed the exact same pattern on the conning tower as SCP-XXXX's. The interior of the object was searched, but it was completely empty, as if it were brand new, freshly finished.
