SCP-3578 In site ████-██

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3578 is to be kept in a 4 m x 4 m x 4 m cell, directly in the center of the room on the floor. All surfaces in the room are backlit by 40 watt LEDs with their light facing 3578. If there is a loss of power two backup generators will be activated to avoid a security breach.

In the event that SCP-3578 is opened, broken, or cracked, a containment specialist team will enter the chamber to contain SCP-3578 and all instances of SCP-3578-2. Whenever the door is opened to the chamber, hallway lights in the containment block will be turned on to prevent shadows from entering the room and reaching 3578.

Due to 3578’s anomalous properties, the Observation chamber does not have a glass window, instead, it is equipped with motion, heat, and infrared sensors. Along each corner of the room, a standard security camera is also installed. In the case that SCP-3578-2 instances escape containment security personnel are to cover and obscure all windows, doors, and glass that SCP-3578-2 instances are able to pass through. Facility floodlights will be engaged until all instances have been neutralized.

Only personnel with security clearance 4 are able to access SCP-3578 for research purposes with the written permission of personnel with Security Clearance 5. Breaching any of these security measures can lead to termination.

Description:SCP-3578 resembles an ancient ceramic urn indigenous to West Africa during the pre-colonial period. However, when lab personal attempted to carbon date the object they had readings that dated 2 billion years ago. 3578 has a reddish-brown hue and it has been decorated humanoid head on the lid. 3578 is 35.56 cm tall and 16.28 cm wide and weighs 908 grams. SCP-3578 is highly breakable and must be handled with EXTREME care to avoid a security breach. In the event, SCP-3578 is dropped and shattered SCP-3578 is able to be reconstructed back to its original form. When reconstructing the shards seem to have magnetic attractive properties towards other shards, allowing for it to be “snapped” back together with relative ease. It has been noted however it does not share these attractive properties to any other objects.

When SCP-3578 is opened and a shadow is cast from the object SCP-3578-2 instances will be created. SCP-3578-2 resemble tall humanoids 2 meters long, wielding spears, similarly to ancient cave art of hunters of the prehistoric age. All instances of SCP-3578-2 have been observed to be highly hostile and life-threatening. While SCP staff does not know the highest amount of SCP-3578-2 instances that can exist at once, on average 15 instances will usually be created upon SCP-3578 breaking. SCP-3578-2 are shadows emitted from SCP-3578 even if there is no physical object that could cast shadows in the shape of the instances. 3578-2 are able to engage and interact with an object in the three-dimensional word by interacting with their shadows.

3578-2 is able to extend its range by having shadows cast upon 3578, giving a greater area for 3578-2 to traverse. SCP-3578-2 can only be neutralized by breaking the connection between SCP-3578-2 instances and SCP-3578. SCP-3578-2 instances behave physically like shadows cast by non-anomalous objects, they are able to pass through glass and other translucent objects and openings. This, therefore, poses a great threat to facility security.

Addendum: [Optional additional paragraphs]

Addendum #1: Item was recovered on █/█/20██ in Cote d'Ivoire, Africa, by Agent [REDACTED], while operating undercover, posing as an Archeologist for a privately funded dig site by [REDACTED]co. Agent was on site when the object was recovered from what was believed to have been the grounds of an ancient village.

The object was not known to be anomalous until the transport of SCP-3578 where the lid was lifted momentarily releasing an instance of 3578-2. 3578-2 was able to kill several dig site workers before the urn was resealed by Agent [REDACTED]. Item was transported back to Site █████ without further incident.

Addendum #2: All experiments are logged in file #3578-E.

Addendum #3: Personnel with Level 4 Clearance are required to read all containment procedures and XXXX’s description of anomalous its properties before interacting with 3578.

Experiment 3578-e-1

Name: Dr.██████ with Dr.████assisting.

Date █/██/████

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed in a secured test chamber containing SCP-3578. The test chamber is to be observed through the adjacent control room via cameras and microphones installed in the test chamber. D-class subject will be ordered various instructions through a microphone in the test chamber. D-class will report its observations until told otherwise.

Results: Subject D-24063(Female,25, no discernible mental abnormalities) is placed in the chamber and told to approach SCP-3578. Subject is not told of 3578’s anomalous properties. Subject is instructed to open SCP-3578 and place lid directly next to the container on the floor and to report their observations.

Subject complies and immediately recoils when instances of 3578-2 emerge from the opening of 3578. Subject backs up from SCP-3578 and 3578-2 instances, vocalizing their dislike for 3578-2. Subject is instructed to approach 3578-2. Subject does not respond to command. Subject is reminded that noncompliance can be grounds for termination. Subject then approaches 3578-2 instances.

When Subject is 2 Meters from 3578-2, 3578-2 instances turn to face subject and dash towards Subjects shadow and pierces subject’s shadow’s stomach with their spearlike protrusions. Subject stumbles back and collapses in heap on test chamber floor. Testing is ended and containment security team enters and contains all instances along with 3578 with no casualties. Subjects body is brought back for medical evaluation by medical staff. Medical team is unable to explain how the shadow was able to interact with the physical form of the Subject through the shadow.

Medical team notes that traces of flint(commonly used in the heads of prehistoric spears) and wood were found in the wound.

Notes: Dr. ██████ “Well this is certainly an interesting little object we have. However, we will need further testing to see how we can interact with those cave-painting entities..”

Experiment 3578-e-2

Name: Dr.██████ with Dr.████ assisting.

Date █/█/████

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed in secured test chamber containing SCP-3578. Subject is given a basic understanding of 3578’s anomalous properties. The test chamber is to be observed through the adjacent control room via cameras and microphones installed in the test chamber. D-class subject will be ordered various instructions through a microphone in the test chamber. D-class will report its observations until told otherwise.

Results: Subject D-74356(Male,37, no discernible mental abnormalities) is placed in the chamber with a crude stone spear and is instructed to open SCP-3578. Subject complies and opens 3578 and steps back. Approximately 10 seconds after opening two instances of XXXX-2 are created and emerge from the urn.

Subject is told to position himself so his shadow and spear may reach one of the instances. Subject approaches an instance of 3578-2 and thrusts spear shadow into the instance. The attack did no observable damage to SCP-3578-2, however, a loud screech measuring around 110 decibels was emitted and ten 3578-2 instances emerge from 3578 and proceed to swarm the subject's shadow.
Lacerations and stab wounds appear over the subjects eyes, throat, and torso. Testing is ended. Even after subject expires due to wounds from 3578-2 instances continued to mangle subjects corpse until containment team arrives and contains all instances.

Body was sent to medical research staff for evaluation. Similar wood and flint samples were found from experiment 3578-e-1.

Notes: Dr. ██████ “So it seems our own shadows cannot seem to interact with these shadow instances. We still have a lot to learn about these things. I guess we will have to test what kind of lights affect the instances.”

Experiment 3578-e-3

Name: Dr.██████ with Dr.████ assisting.

Date █/██/████

Procedure: Two D-class subject is to be placed in secured test chamber containing SCP-3578. Subjects are given a basic understanding of 3578’s anomalous properties. The test chamber is to be observed through the adjacent control room via cameras and microphones installed in the test chamber. D-class subjects will be ordered various instructions through a microphone in the test chamber. Several lights have been set up in the test chamber:

-650 mn Military Grade Laser
-40 Watt LED Light Strip
-32 Watt Black Light

These lights will be directed at 3578 and Instances of 3578-2. D-Class subjects will report observations until told otherwise.

Results: Subject D-82451(Male,20, no discernible mental abnormalities), and Subject D-2101(Female 38, no discernible mental abnormalities) are placed in the chamber with SCP-3578. For reference, D-82451 will be referenced as Subject A, and D-2101 will be referred to as Subject B.

Subject A is instructed to open SCP-3578 and to step back to the walls of the contained test chamber. Subjects are informed to wait for an instance of 3578-2 to appear. After 25 seconds of 3578 being opened an instance of 3578-2 materializes from 3578. Subject B is then instructed to turn on the 650 mn military grade laser and point it at the instance of 3578-2. Subject B complies. When the laser passed over the instance it displayed behaviors of pain and great discomfort. 3578 began emitting a loud screeching sound measuring around 110 decibels.

The instance sustained 10 more seconds of the laser before retreating back into 3578. Subject A and B were then instructed to turn off the laser and to prepare the LED light strips positioned around the room. Preparation went without incident. Once preparation was complete Subject A and B retreated to the corners of the room and to wait for an instance of 3578-2 to appear. After 188 seconds, 4 instances of SCP-3578-2 emerged from the urn. Subject A was then informed to activate the LEDs. Upon the immediate activation, instances showed immediate discomfort and recoiled at the light. 3578 continued to emit a screeching sound measuring 150 decibels. After 5 seconds of exposure, the instances returned to 3578.

Test subjects were instructed to then deactivate the LEDs and to turn on the 32 watt black light located on the far side of the test chamber. Blacklight was activated and pointed towards 3578. 3578 emitted low rumbling sounds and vibrated violently. Two instances of 3578-2 emerged from the urn after approximately 15 seconds of exposure. 3578-2 instances were noted to be much larger. Standing around 3.5 meters in the room.

Subjects voiced their displeasure for the larger instances and wished to turn off the black light. Subjects were given the “OK” and black light was deactivated and LED lights went on. The larger instances seem unfazed by the deactivation of the black light, but showed great anger towards the LED light strips. 3578-2 instances took notice of test subject and charged subjects. Subject B was thrown several feet in the air and across the test chamber. Subject A ran to test chamber door and demanded to be let out. Before subject could be instructed to back away from the door subject was expired due to subjects torso being torn out by an instance of 3578-2.

Testing was ended and containment team was sent in armed with 1000mn Lasers. 3578-2 instances were contained with heavy facility casualties. Of the 14 MTF units sent in 10 would expire due to wounds sustained from 3578-2. 3578 was successfully closed and all instances contained.

Notes: Dr. ██████ “Well I’m glad we know what kinds of lights can contain these things. The black light seemed to stXthen the powers of 3578 and her instances. Shame we lost so many facility in containing them. This testing has been conclusive however and I recommend no further testing is needed.
