Item #: SCP-5916

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5916 is to be kept in a sealed plexiglass container measuring 1.5x1.5x5m, resting in a soundproof and windowless environment. The container is to be filled completely with mercury of at least 98% purity and kept at a temperature of 40℃, and is to be kept in darkness whenever possible. Draining of the mercury into a secondary chamber for observation and experimentation should only occur under explicit permission from Dr. Elliott or a member of the 05 Council. Under no circumstances should the container be exposed to white or red light, and all observations should be done under a blue, ultraviolet, or X-Ray light source. Any movement in the plexiglass chamber or destabilization in environmental readings should be responded to with swift incineration of SCP-5916, reaching at least 860℃ for 5 seconds.

Description: SCP-5916 is a cylindrical piece of an visibly normal tree of the genus Quercus, measuring around 1m diameter and 3m height. It has immense regenerative abilities, and its rate of photosynthesis is accelerated greatly. The tree’s leaves process 4403.56 parts per million of carbon dioxide gas, while tree growth remains normal. After undergoing this accelerated form of photosynthesis for about 30 minutes, however, a sentient humanoid being emerges within 6 seconds, hereby referred to as SCP-5916-1. It stands at 1.23 meters tall and has a wingspan of approximately 2.3 meters. Its exterior seems to be made of wood, but its ability to move its limbs and other appendages suggests otherwise. Attempts to test the composition of or take a sample from SCP-5916-1 have been unsuccessful. However, X-Ray radiography of SCP-5916 reveals SCP-5916-1 inside in a fetal position. Its head is featureless apart from a single elliptical hole of undetermined depth and a ~2.5 cm major axis diameter. SCP-5916-1 will engage any source of noise above 50 dB, instantaneously traveling to the source. It proceeds to extend a finger to touch the object, and the noise ceases. During this process, SCP-5916-1 will emit a sound of the same volume, greatly resembling the human "Shhh" noise. SCP-5916-1 promptly returns to its “dock” in the tree if all noise sources have been eliminated. Further examination of the noise making object reveal that its insides have been replaced with nutrient-rich soil.

SCP-5916 and 5916-1 were first encountered by employees of ██████ Logging LLC in Plot █ of the coniferous forests of ████,█, USA on 12/21/2012. After an ahead team and a Search and Rescue unit did not return, local authorities were contacted. At this time the Foundation was alerted and carried out all further operations.

Initial containment was unsuccessful, as any attempts to contain SCP-5916-1 while active proved fatal. During the 30 minute process of rejuvenation SCP-5916-1 must take periodically, its portion of SCP-5916 was removed and contained.

Upon removal of SCP-5916 from the soil, a corpse was discovered beneath, a male around 800 years old. Along with the corpse a number of relics, jewelery, and ornate weapons were also buried. All artifacts contain an image of a circle quadrasected by a cross.

Addendum 5916-01: The following is a log of two notable experiments done in order to determine the sentience of SCP-5916-1:

Remote operated speaker and camera with external memory device are placed in the containment area, and SCP-5915 is released from the plexiglass container, given sufficient red light, water, and other nutrients. After 34 minutes and 7 seconds, the shape of SCP-5915-1 begins to emerge from its host. 4 seconds after the first visible changes, SCP-5915-1 becomes a separate entity and stands completely still in the chamber. At this time, the speaker is activated, which plays at increasing volume (exponentially, at 1 dB/s) a pulsating sound of 100 Hz. When the speaker reached 43.6 dB, SCP-5916-1 turned its head towards the device, suggesting some type of ocular contact. At precisely 50 dB, the entity appeared, crouched, in front of the speaker, touched it with its index finger, shushed the device, and the speaker stopped casting. Its face turned to face the camera, but the entity did not engage. 29 minutes elapsed with no movement from SCP-5916-1, ending abruptly as it turned and walked to its dock in SCP-5916. The entity promptly disappeared, and X-Ray imaging confirmed it was back in the tree.

Conclusion: SCP-5916-1 is capable of responding to visual, physical, and auditory stimuli and demonstrates behavior that may indicate a thought process. Further experimentation is required.
