Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
A stylized painting depicting one specimen of SCP-XXXX1. Recovered from an afflicted civilian.
Special Containment Procedures: Due to the nature of SCP-XXXX, any instances of this creature are to be kept in a small, airtight environment. SCP-XXXX requires composted soil and a quadri-hebdomadal supplementation of water to be distributed in amounts no greater than 125 milliliters. Unless imperative for controlled testing, SCP-XXXX is not to be dealt with without some sort of air-purifying respirator or nasal filter. If removed from containment, any space up to five meters in any direction from the location of contact are to be quarantined until thoroughly disinfected.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a type of botanical anomaly noted for releasing a constant stream of neurologically-damaging spores. Growing at an approximate exponential rate of 0.4 centimeters each year, natural cases of SCP-XXXX have a recorded maximum height of 18 centimeters; however, if kept in an ideal environment, researchers hypothesize that SCP-XXXX can reach 23 centimeters in height. This anomalous species tends to have a large bloom, as mature blossoms reach an approximate 28 centimeters before halting petal growth. Described as having an odor somewhat similar to Prunus persica2, this patterned botanical's appearance has been the inciting cause of many SCP-XXXX-related injuries.
As aforementioned, SCP-XXXX has evolved with a biological predator-repellent; the presence of neurally-targeting spores that, when inhaled nasally, ultimately result in cranial gangrene. This process of cerebellar rot has been divided into two stages: amygdaloid and encephalous decay.
Amygdaloid Decay
When initially inhaled, SCP-XXXX's spores will attack the amygdala- a structure in the brain that controls particularly strong emotions and memories. Early pathological decay targets emotions; however, as this stage transitions to encephalous decay, focus will often shift to the destruction of memories. Once making contact with the right amygdala, spores released by SCP-XXXX will administer short electrical discharges to the structure's surface. When repeated, these discharges slowly pick off flesh from the amygdala; and, as time progresses, kill the muscle itself. Victims in this stage will experience total loss of emotions and a decline in memory-based functions.
Encephalous Decay
Once the entirety of the amygdala is destroyed, these spores will spread and attack the rest of the brain indiscriminately. How SCP-XXXX accomplishes this is currently unknown. After entering this stage, victims will experience a slow, painless death- as sparks are continually produced by SCP-XXXX's spores, cranial tissue gradually rots away until all major functions are destroyed. Strangely, SCP-XXXX does not kill its target directly; most casualties induced by this species are caused by a malfunctioning cognitive system, such as forgetting to breathe and accidental self-harm.
