Description- SCP-4968 is a pataphysical area. It is located everywhere and nowhere in our universe.
Special Containment Procedures- SCP-4986 cannot be contained.
History- SCP-4968 originated before the existence of time. Upon the beginning of time and defined space, it was separated from regulated defined reality by its pataphysical superposition, which is not bound by defined existence.
On a date estimated to be between twelve billion and thirteen billion years ago, it spawned the prime universe.
Following this event, superphysical fields appeared in the prime universe. The fields varied in shapes and sizes, and the fields often adhered to the shape of objects which they originated from.
Approximately two to three thousand years (2000-3000) before the common era, an anomalous entity that referred to itself as the Guardian appeared and began to gather a following. The Guardian stated that it was responsible for maintaining regulated physics in the prime universe.
An occult organisation formed around the anomalous entity known as the Guardian between 1500-1900 years before the common era, as evidenced by a rudimentary containment facility, and contained anomalies within.
Thirty-three (33) anomalies presumed to previously maintain life functions were found without continuing life functions. The other five hundred and twenty three (523) anomalies remained where they were found, and the site of the anomalous artefacts became a Foundation containment facility.
The entity referred to as the Guardian appeared in Site-██ on the 31st December, 2018, and asked to be interviewed “by a member of the occupying organisation for anomalous effect minimalization.”Doctor ██ ██████ performed the interview. Below is a transcript.
Doctor ██ ██████- So, who are you?
The Guardian- I am the one responsible for maintaining what you would refer to as normalcy.
Doctor ██ ██████- Regular laws of physics, regular entropic time, regulated universe existence?
The Guardian- I don’t maintain those. I created them, with other gods, and they abandoned me after life originated on this planet you call home. They wished to be revered and worshipped.
Doctor ██ ██████- You created the laws of physics?
The Guardian- Yes. I wished to see regulated existence. An existence that was the very opposite of me.
Doctor ██ ██████- Presumably, then, you are unregulated?
The Guardian- Yes.
Doctor ██ ██████- That’s impossible. It can’t happen.
The Guardian- You used to be in the Department of Pataphysics. You should know it isn’t. I am one of the few anomalies that has a consciousness-based superphysical field, and the only one with a pataphysical field.
Doctor ██ ██████- Like an electromagnetic field?
The Guardian- Exactly.
Doctor ██ ██████- Then, what exactly is a consciousness-based pataphysical field?
The Guardian- You might refer to it as being all-powerful and all-knowing. I am capable of anything, because pataphysics allows anything, and my localised field of pataphysics is controlled consciously.
Doctor ██ ██████- You are-
The Guardian- Some call me God. Others call me the Great Spirit. Some yet worship the other gods, the ones with consciousness-based defined superphysical fields.
(Silence for 23 seconds)
Doctor ██ ██████- The other gods are who?
The Guardian- Horus, Quetzalcoatl- All of them, really. They all have limited amounts of power,
imposed randomly on them by the pataphysical space.
Doctor ██ ██████- All the human gods?
The Guardian- And ever more.
Doctor ██ ██████- So the amount of gods increases?
The Guardian- Yes. I sense you are curious about how this works.
Doctor ██ ██████- Yeah.
The Guardian- We begin where all tales ultimately find their origin. The nothing that existed before Something existed. That’s Something with a capital ‘S’ by the way. In the nothing, there were no laws of physics.
Doctor ██ ██████- Why were there not?
The Guardian- If you didn’t interrupt, we could get there a tiny bit faster. But it’s a reasonable interruption, I suppose. To answer your question, there were no laws of physics because there was no reason for there to be.
Doctor ██ ██████- Can you prove this claim? Just out of curiosity.
The Guardian- All right. Before there was anything, there was nothing, right? But if there were laws of physics, nothing would exist.
Doctor ██ ██████- Because of the law of conservation of mass, right?
The Guardian- Yes. If there were laws of physics, there would be nothing to regulate, but there would be a regulated nothing. But existence prevailed. Therefore, there were no laws of physics.
Doctor ██ ██████- What does-
The Guardian- I’m not done. The pataphysics mechanic creates the anomalies. The gods, the ones you were curious about, are limited by the pataphysical mechanic that created them. I am the only one who isn’t, by sheer dumb luck.
Doctor ██ ██████- You mean that the pataphysical space is the reason behind all of this?
The Guardian- Yes, it is. It is the origin of the anomalies. It is the prime anomaly. And it is inescapable. It is transcendent logic. No matter where you go, there was nothing there once, and that nothing had no laws of physics. Even if this reality is all a simulation, there are anomalies. The SCPs, as you call them, are not bound to just this reality. They are in every reality.
Doctor ██ ██████- What if there’s a place out there where there are no anomalies? How would you explain that?
The Guardian- I guess there’s a version of me doing a better job than I am. Regulating properly, missing nothing. Leaving only a regulated universe.
Doctor ██ ██████- Could I ask you something?
The Guardian- I can’t grant your request. If I get rid of the anomalies, you don’t know what humanity will become. There are anomalies that have spread through humanity, anomalies that I allowed to be there. Anomalies that you call kindness, empathy, intelligence. Hell, even souls. Without them, there is no goodness in humanity. So if the events of Quiet Days come to pass-
Doctor ██ ██████- What?
The Guardian- There are stories set in this universe, in another universe. There must be, in an infinite set of universes. Quiet Days is a story, one of many conflicting and contradictory stories, that set the scene for our universe.
Doctor ██ ██████- And what of it?
The Guardian- The reality of that situation is that the anomalies stop being anomalous. Humans devolve into the animals they are supposed to be. The gods stop existing, because they, too, are anomalous. I will be alone. Only I, alone in my pataphysical, intrinsically impossible existence, will be left. I will not ruin this universe which I so carefully crafted. No.
Doctor ██ ██████- Thank you for-
(The Guardian disappears.)
Doctor ██ ██████- Your time.
(A note appears. It reads 'How dare you speak to the great and mighty Guardian. I shall destroy you for it.
