Visual rendition of SCP-XXXX

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The nature of SCP-XXXX makes containment impossible. SCP-XXXX sightings are often written off by the public as hallucinations caused by fatigue, making SCP-XXXX somewhat naturally contained. In some cases, SCP-XXXX has become an urban legend within the locals, with small communities of secluded people claiming its existence. These secluded communities are often small fishing villages near the coast. The SCP Foundation sees no need to intervene within these small communities.

Description: SCP-XXXX manifests as a figure in a mid-1950's dive suit. The dive suit is made of a black shiny metal with gold highlights. It has a very worn appearance with many dents and scratches visible. SCP-XXXX's head and body is covered in plant life, with the body being much more heavily covered.

SCP-XXXX will only appear if the subject is no less than 5 kilometers from shore and visibility is less than 30 meters. There must be no lighthouse or other means of navigation present (compass, map, etc.) It is unknown how far out from the coast SCP-XXXX can manifest, but upwards of 80 kilometers has been recorded. Subject must only have access to paddles or oars of some sort. While a motor can be present at the time of the manifestation, it must not be functional (a motor that's had a mechanical error causing non-functionality or a motor out of power/fuel are some examples.) There is no recorded sighting of SCP-XXXX with more than one person present. The event can take place at day or night as long as all previous parameters are met.

SCP-XXXX will rise from the waters approximately 1 to 2 meters from the subject. Its porthole will emit a dim light, enough to make itself visible to the subject. SCP-XXXX will attempt to guide the subject back to shore by continuously submerging and reemerging while pointing in a single direction. Sightings can occur as often as every minute, though average about 15 to 20 minutes.

SCP-XXXX may have a very minor hypnotic or behavior altering effect. It seems to make people trust it. This is not proven, though. The actions carried out by subjects might be induced by other emotions and not induced by SCP-XXXX itself. Such an effect would be hard to test given the parameters, thus data is inconclusive.

This phenomenon was brought to the Foundation's attention in the late 1990’s after researcher ███████ had dug up 37 news reports, book snippets and other written sightings of SCP-XXXX. All descriptions of SCP-XXXX sightings match to near perfect detail with one another. Many reports claim they had their motor fail or they had run out of fuel. Some claiming they had been taken far out to sea by a riptide. No matter the cause, this effect seems to span across the entire globe.

D-class Testing Log

Date: 2/12/1998

Conducted by: Dr. ████

Foreword: For 3 months, weather conditions were very closely observed off the coast of █████. On February 12th, 1998, a heavy fog had rolled in and testing was commenced. D-4784 is put under anesthesia, making him unconscious for about half an hour. He is dropped 22 kilometers from shore, visibility is 10 to 15 meters on average. D-4784 is not seen for the next 5 hours, until being spotted trying to pull his boat ashore. D-4784 is taken back into foundation custody and is interviewed.

<Begin log>

Dr. ████: D-4784, what happened out there?

D 4784: Well, uh… I woke up and heard the calm sounds of splashing water. I was looking upwards since I was on my back and felt myself rocking. I had no clue where the hell I was. I sat up and couldn't see shit. It was like midnight I think. A bit of moonlight was all there was, I could tell it was foggy. Man, I couldn't remember what I was doing before I ended up there. It was all so blurry.

Dr. ████: What did you do first?

D-4784: I grabbed the oars and started rowing, probably got 3 meters and stopped. I was confused as hell I didn't want to get more lost. I sat there for uh… I don't know… maybe 5 minutes. Scared shitless that's for sure. Screamed for a bit, looked around the boat. All I had were damned oars. Then I saw something in the water

Dr. ████: Go on.

D-4784: It was a light, like way deep down. I was really worried at first, thought I was done for. Maybe some ancient curse was gonna come up and kill me dead, right then and there. shit was creepy. Then it emerged. It looked like a man. A man in a suit. One of those really old ones though. You know, with big metal helmets.

Dr. ████: What did it look like? Explain in detail the best you can, please.

D-4784: Well its helmet was black, like a shiny black metal. Its portholes and stuff were all gold. It looked pretty beat up too. Big dent on the head, bunch of scratches. It was also covered in seaweed. Not too much on the helmet but I could barely see the body. After it had emerged I could see the light was coming from its porthole. It was enough light to illuminate around me too.

Dr. ████: Did it do anything to you?

D-4784: Nah, it just pointed.

Dr. ████: Pointed?

D-4784: Yea it just pointed off into the fog. I stared for a few seconds in confusion. It lifted its other arm and motioned me to follow. I grabbed my oars and started rowing.

Dr. ████: Wait, why would you follow it?

D-4784: I'm not sure, It seemed nice.

Dr. ████: Ok… what happened next?

D-4784: I got maybe a meter or so and it sank back down. Just like that, I was alone again, with only the faint light of the moon to keep me company. Maybe 10 minutes passed and I started getting really scared again. Then I saw it. It came back up, pointed, and went back down. that repeated for a while. The times varied, sometimes I saw it a lot. Sometimes it felt like hours in between. Every time I saw it though, it was like a sigh of relief.

Dr. ████: Did its actions ever vary between sightings? Any voices or other motions?

D-4784: It was always very quiet, rose from the waters very gently. You'd only really notice it because of the light. Only time it did something other than point was when it waved me to follow.

Dr. ████: Did you try to make any other contact with it?

D-4784: Nope. just kept rowing.

Dr. ████: You were found on the shore, how did you get there?

D-4784: It guided me there. I just kept rowing. I hadn't seen it for at least half an hour when I felt my boat strike something. It was ground, I was finally back on land and safe again. I hopped into the water and dragged my boat in. Then I saw a bunch of men with guns and shit. they walked up to me and it all came back to me, hit me like a ton of bricks. This was all one of your weird tests on those weird things you talked about in the training videos.

Dr. ████: Is there anything else you have to add to this interview?

D-4784: No, I think that's pretty much it. It was nice seeing a friendly face out there though. I think I'll miss him.

Interview is ended and test is marked as concluded
