Item #: SCP-4035

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3821 is to be kept within a secured room with access being granted to personnel only after receiving written approval of Dr.█████ and Level 2 clearance. SCP-3821, while not being tested on, will remain in a standard issue locker and must never come into unauthorized possession of personnel. Any personnel attempting or succeeding in acquiring SCP-3821 without prior approval must be eliminated by all means necessary. After testing, any test subject that has been in contact with SCP-3821 must be put under permanent observation until either termination of said subject is required or it self-terminates. When transporting SCP-3821 it is not to be handled with bare hands or gloves. Any indirect means of transporting are advised.

Description: SCP-3821 is an antique bank note, with a worth of ten (10) Deutschmark (DEM) from 1948. Despite it's supposed age and against any expectations, the note itself appears to be freshly printed at all times, and does not show any signs of aging.

The item in question came to the Foundation's attention after a series of residents in the city Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany, acquired great wealth and later killed themselves for no apparent reason. Agent ███ was sent to investigate the residence of █████ ███, the latest death that occurred on said premise. The interior walls had been written on with graphite pencils and black markers, the text reading: “Where is it?” in different sizes several times. The only item found in the residence was a bank note on the floor, which has been taken to Site ██ by the Agent. After returning, the Agent had to be terminated.

The way SCP-3821's effects work have yet to be entirely understood. When attempting to use SCP-3821 as a manner of payment within a monetary transaction, the keeper of the store in question will treat it as the perfect amount of money requested, despite Deutschmark not being used anymore, as well as the worth of SCP-3821 exceeding or falling short the bought item's worth.
The bill given to the cashier will de-materialize when placed in a cash register or any container, however, attempting to observe SCP-3821 during this process has been proven ineffective, as the bill will abruptly disappear when stared at for an extended amount of time. Upon disappearing, the bill will instantly materialize within any pocket or other means of container on the subject's body or clothes. The same effect is observed when trying to dispatch of SCP-3821 by use of destructive means.

Subjects that are in possession of SCP-3821 will feel a rush of euphoria upon realization of it's effect and will attempt to buy as many items as possible, sometimes even depleting a store's entire stock of valuables (See Addendum #1, Document #143-L).
This rush persists until SCP-3821 is either misplaced or taken away from the subject. After that point, the subject will grow agitated and furious about not being in possession of the bill. Subjects may grow depressed and [DATA EXPUNGED]. In such cases, many of the subjects commit suicide. However, when in an agitated state, the subject gains extraordinary strength and will do anything to reclaim SC3821. (Request to test with that strength has been submitted, approval pending.)

Addendum #1:
Document #143-L: Test Logs of SCP-3821

Test log 1-A
Subject: D-9138
Researchers on site: Dr. Clint, Dr. Iden
Procedure: D-9138 will be given SCP-3821 and sent into a fake candy store built on site.
The store is run by Agent ██████ and Agent ████ (From now on referred to as Agent 1 and »Agent 2 respectively). Said agents have been instructed to, under no circumstance, accept SCP-»3821 as payment. D-91338 has been made aware of SCP-3821's effects. At this time, there was »knowledge of the side effects. D-91338 is asked to buy something from the store.

[BEGIN LOG: 14:53]

D-9138 enters the store with SCP-3821 in his hand.

D-9138:”Oh, sweet! A candy store! And you're asking me to just… buy anything I want?”

Dr. Iden:”Yes, please proceed.”

D-9138:”This is a dream come true!”

D-91338 grabs a basket provided by the store and walks through the store in haste, eyeing the »stock. Subject seems very excited about the fact, that this is a candy store.
Agent 1 and 2 are waiting at the cash register. D-91338 is approaching them with a basket full of »items.

Agent 1:”Is that everything?”

D-9138:”I wish it wasn't but the basket's full."

Subject places the full basket onto the counter, Agent 2 proceeds with scanning the items for their prize.

Agent 2:”That'll be 34.99.”

D-9138 grabs the bill from his pocket and looks confused.

D-9138:”You sure this works?”

Dr. Iden:”Please do not waste time. Proceed with the payment.”

D-91338 places the bill on the counter. Agent 2 takes the money without any questions, no attempt of interrupting by Agent 1 is made.

Dr.Clint:”Please inspect your pockets."

D-9138 is checking all of his pockets. From his left pocket, he pulls out a new instance of SCP-3821.
D-9138 leaves the store with the bought items and the Agents do not interfere.

[END LOG: 15:08]

Notes: When the Agents were asked why they accepted the bill, even though they were instructed not to, they answered with confusion and stated they didn't know why. D-9138 asked if he were able to buy more items and refused to return SCP-3821 to on-site staff. For further information, see Addendum #3, incident 3821-A.

Test Log 1-B
Subject: D-659871
Researchers on site: Dr. Iden, Dr. █████
Procedure: D-659871 will be given SCP-3821 and asked to buy something from the store built on site. The store is run by the same Agents as before, who have received the same instructions. D-659871 has not been made aware of SCP-3821's effects and it's influence on the mind. After removing SCP-3821 from the subject's possession, D-659871 will be put under surveillance for 48 hours.

[BEGIN LOG: 17:13]

D-659871 enters the store. He grabs a basket and browses the items in the store. Subject asks research staff if he may keep the items he buys, researcher Dr. █████ answers with confirmation. D-659871 shows gratitude and joy towards that answer and proceeds with selecting items from the store.
Subject approaches the counter and places the selected wares.

Agent 1:”23.89, please.”

D-659871 proceeds with the payment. Agent 1 takes the money, Agent 2 does not interrupt.

Dr. Iden:”You were instructed to refuse the payment. Return the money.”

Agent 1 and 2 do not respond.

Dr. Iden:”I repeat, return the money.”

No response. The transaction proceeds as normal.

Dr. Iden:”D-659871, please check your pockets.”

D-659871:”Why? What's the point of that?”

Dr. Iden:”Please, do as you are told.”

Subject proceeds to find SCP-3821 in the same pocket it was previously kept in and shows great excitement over it. D-659871 rushes to get two more baskets and fills them very quickly. Subject then runs back over to the cash register. This repeats for another five baskets of items. He was then rendered unconscious by on-site security personnel.

[END LOG: 17:49]

Notes: For information on the observation of the subject, refer to the Observation Logs in Addendum #2.

Test Log 1-C
Subjects: D-524211, D-37159
Researchers on site: Dr. Iden, Dr. Yeast
Procedure: D-37159 will be given SCP-3821 and asked to browse the shop. D-524211 will receive ten (10) US Dollars and be asked to buy something a few minutes after D-37159.

[BEGIN LOG: 10:04]

The subjects enter the store. Subject 1 (D-37159) is asked to grab a basket and browse the items while subject 2 (D-524211) is instructed to wait. After a few minutes, Subject 1 has bought an estimate of 25% of the store's stock. D-524211 is told to buy something themselves. The second the subject touches an item, D-37159 rushes over to them.

D-37159: excessively loud “Hey! Why are you taking this?! It's mine!”

D-524211:”Huh? I'm just taking this chocolate bar… I want to buy it…”

D-37159:”Give. It. Back.”

Dr. Yeast:”D-37159, do not bother him any further, please.”

No reply. After Subject 2 further refuses subject 1's request, subject 1 grows aggressive and attempts to take the chocolate bar by force. Subject has been rendered unconscious and SCP-3821 has been passed on to Subject 2. They were instructed to now go ahead and buy anything they want. The same state of euphoria is observed, when the subject realizes the effects of SCP-3821. While Subject 2 is browsing on their own, Subject 1 grows conscious again and aggressively asks where SCP-3821 is. After staff refused to give away that information, subject 1 grows furious and attacks the personnel. He pushes past on-site security staff and charges toward subject 2. Both of them start to engage in a fight for SCP-3821. Both subjects suffer great injuries throughout the fight and both had to be rendered unconscious.
[END LOG: 10:22]

Notes: Never, ever do that again. It took several security personnel and more than 10 minutes to take those two apart. I say, testing with multiple testing should be suspended entirely until the SCP's effects are better understood.
