Special Containment Procedures: Foundation operatives are to monitor any individuals, groups, governments, or institutions attempting to make astronomical observations of the area in which SCP-5934 is situated. In the case of a viewing of SCP-5934, Foundation testing has concluded that the administering of sufficiently powerful amnestics can prevent the creation of an SCP-5934-1 instance if administered within 14 hours of initial exposure.
The only known proof of the existence of SCP-5934 that can viewed safely.
All SCP-5934-1 instances are to be contained at Site-██ in a steel dome, coated inside and out with vantablack paint, and a diameter of at least 25 metres. These domes should always themselves be guarded by at least 4 security guards (who are to be amnesticized after every shift change), and repaired with a 4 inch layer of steel and vantablack paint bi-weekly. No sources of light more than 50 lumens are allowed in the containment hold for the domes, and no light sources at all during repair and testing processes.
Description: SCP-5934 is an entity currently in a retrograde orbit around the sun at a distance of 9.6 astronomical units, always visible from Earth, save for a collective 44 days out of every 700, where it is hidden behind the Sun, planets, or miscellaneous space objects. Though exact measurements or images cannot be acquired to due the nature of the anomaly, non-visible light reflected off SCP-5934 has been studied to ascertain the entity to be roughly 4400 km long, possess protusions or appendages approximately 1200km long, and sharp aspects to it, as is evident from the marks left in the moon Dione from contact with SCP-5934, the only known time SCP-5934 has made contact with a planet, moon, or dwarf planet.
Anyone who views SCP-5934 is infected with a cognitohazard that causes a violent, often fatal transformation of the base human form and psyche, and is able to be broken down into stages:
Stage 1, first 14 hours of infection: Within 5 minutes of first exposure to the cognitohazard, SCP-5934-1 will begin to suffer from paranoia, anxiety and act generally manic, often whispering expletives or expressions of shock and disbelief. Attempting to ask SCP-5934-1 about what they saw or what SCP-5934 looked like, even only immediately after exposure, will result in refusals to cooperate, and only seem to worsen symptoms of exposure. These symptoms will gradually worsen over the course of 14 hours, ending in a complete panic attack at the beginning of the 13th hour, during which SCP-5934-1 does not, or is not able to, respond to any outside stimuli, and will simply attempt to smash their head into a hard surface repeatedly and repeat a single word or phrase, such as "No", or "Don't look at me." Several subjects have died due to severe head trauma during this phase. It is during these 14 hours that amnestics administered to cause SCP-5934-1 to forget what it saw will prevent the progression to next stages of infection.
Stage 2, 15th hour to 3rd week: Any SCP-5934-1 instances that have reached this stage of infection are to be considered top priority for containment. As soon as the 14th hour of infection concludes, SCP-5934-1 suddenly stops experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and will stand up straight and stationary, and it is during this phase that physical symptoms begin. Over the course of three weeks SCP-5934-1's skin will discolour to a deep maroon-red, possibly due to the breakdown of blood vessels, allowing blood to seep into the skin and fester. The eyes will experience a similar discolouring, and will dissolve into the muscle of the face, eventually leading to SCP-5934-1 having no ocular functions at all.. The muscles, organs, and tissues of the infected will emaciate away, leaving the infected significantly underwieght, often leaving very little more than skin on bones. The hair of the subject, if present, will become brittle and stiff, with a consistency similar to that of dried hay. Subjects in this stage do not respond to stimuli at all. Vast majority of SCP-5934-1 instances die during this stage.
Stage 3, 4th week onward: Subjects stop emaciating, and regain the ability to move. How instances are able to locomote despite the loss of 85% of nerves, tendons, and musculature is not known. In spite of this degeneration, SCP-5934-1 instances that have reached this stage exhibit extreme strength, and are capable of manipulating the shape of their body to some extent, such as elongating their limbs or fingers, or forming new limbs from whatever rotted mass they contain, although it seems they can only exhibit these abilities when exposed to light. This is reason their containment spheres are coated in Vantablack paint, as SCP-5934-1 instances are seen to be subdued and calm in low light environments. Subjects that reach this stage can once again react to stimuli, but do not act as they did before exposure to SCP-5934. Viewing an SCP-5934-1 instance in this stage of infection causes a minor cognitohazard effect, causing those affected to suffer from paranoia and unusual levels of fear for several hours after being exposed. The effect is worse the longer they affected was exposed to SCP-5934-1. This congitohazardous effect has been studied, and does not seem to cause SCP-5934-1 infection. Due to the high mortality rate of the previous stage, only ██ SCP-5934-1 instances are currently in containment at Site-██.
The following is the first interview with a Stage 3 SCP-5934-1 instance, taken by Dr. Adeline Badwater, via a microphone placed within the containment sphere of the instance:
Interviewed: SCP-5934-1, formerly John Clancy, astrophysicist, NASA.
Interviewer: Dr. Adeline Badwater, head researcher in charge of SCP-5934 containment.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Adeline: Hello? Can you hear me?
SCP-5943-1: Ha, yes, I can hear you.
SCP-5934-1's speech is slurred, and it's voice sounds crackly, as though it were very ill.
Dr. Adeline: Do you understand what I'm saying?
SCP-5934-1: I do.
