Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: Item SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a modified room 9' x 21' room. Modifications include a ceiling mounted apparatus to hold the object, sand pit floor (of six(6)inches deep), and cloth curtains on far and side walls.
The object's rim will sit flush in the apparatus and it should never be removed except for special circumstances. Attached to the apparatus is a cloth blind to prevent the tester from seeing themselves through the object's opening. Apparatus tilt should be limited to no more than fifteen(15) degrees toward the far side of the room. The object is to remain covered at all times except for testing.
The cloth on the walls must be flush with the floor, and spaced five(5) inches from the wall to prevent the anomalous damage to surrounding structure. The sand pit performs a similar function to prevent permanent damage to the floor.
Do not photograph or record the object's opening. All surveillance of object and tester is positioned to the side or far side of the room.
Description: Item SCP-XXXX is a clear, glass bowl measuring sixteen(16) inches in diameter and five(5) inches deep. The only notable features in its design is the simple floral pattern engraved in the base. The bowl is extremely durable. Efforts to take samples of the glass failed.
The object was purchased from an antique shop in ██████ Tennessee, by one Martha ██████. Anomalous effects were discovered later when the bowl was filled with water. Mrs ██████ was questioned, given amnesiacs, and medical records were adjusted claiming she was deformed from birth. The antique shop only noted the object as a donation with an included letter (See addendum 1).
Anomalous effect occurs when a living creature looks into the opening of the bowl. Originally, the effect was thought to only occur when water was present inside the bowl. This was untrue (See addendum 2). Any perceived refraction of light resulting in visual distortion, of the view through the bowl, will physically take place. In example, water rippling in the bowl will cause the surface viewed through the bowl to ripple in a similar fashion. When visual contact is broken the effect sticks to the last perceived instant. The aforementioned ripple pattern will no longer move on the surface, but will be a static deformation. This deformation affects organic and inorganic materials.
Addendum: [Optional additional paragraphs]
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: The object is to be covered and hung on a central pillar, facing away from the door. The room is to be equipped with incinerators for breach events. The object will remained covered except for testing. Personal are not to look at the object. If personal are suspected to have seen the object, they must be quarantined and observed for influences from SCP-XXXX, for thirty days.
Description: Flat landscape painting. Notable features include bright moon and stars over flat plain.
The black used for the sky is unique. It reflects no wavelengths of light. All attempts to take a sample of the paint have failed. It behaves like a liquid, flowing off instruments and avoiding containers until its back on the canvas. Attempts to cut from the paint side resulted in cutting tool sinking into the paint far deeper than the painting's width. No effect on the canvas. Attempts to cut from behind the painting pierced canvas as expected. The tears would fix themselves as soon as the tool was removed.
On viewing, subjects show no immediate symptoms. Usually comment on the black coloration, and how uneasy they feel about it. Weeks later the subject shows lack of empathy, emotion, and sociability. Gains an interest in painting and an obsession for expressing "true lightless". Several attempts will be made to reproduce SCP-XXXX, all not representing the black well enough. Each failure makes the subject more frantic with the desire to visit SCP-XXXX again for "perfect inspiration". Subjects must not be allowed to return to SCP-XXXX.
Amnesiacs will return subject to a normal state for 1-2 weeks before the obsession for "true lightless" returns. They will try to replicate the painting even though they have no memory of the original and will begin searching for "perfect inspiration". Subjects act on an instinctual need to return to it.
Addendum: The one time someone was allowed to touch it: Subject was allowed entry to SCP-XXXX and approached it quickly. Subject looked the painting over for 33 minutes and approached it, touching the black paint. The subject mumbled " … making the perfect black …". Immediately, black paint poured from the subject's mouth. They did not move, sound, or react at all. Welts grew and opened on the subject's arms and legs. More black paint poured from the new wounds. The paint began to spread over the painting and along the floor. Breach procedures initialized, incinerators activated for five minutes. SCP-XXXX survived incineration, no change was detected. No evidence of black paint or the subject in the room.
