Diego García: Mineral Tree

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be placed in a standard containment chamber with no vents and entirely covered in sound reducing panels. The entrance to the chamber should also be at a considerable distance of the chamber so as to keep any unexpected individuals from hearing SCP-XXXX. There should be one security camera constantly focused on the SCP-XXXX, which should be turned kept on at all times and has to be inspected for repair every time SCP-XXXX is its "taste" form. 3 individuals of class D personnel have to be sent to clean the chamber when SCP-XXXX is in its “taste” form. In the occasion that the effects of SCP-XXXX have taken place in the chamber, 4 individuals of class D personnel will enter to replace and/or fix the surfaces damaged by the effects when SCP-XXXX is in its “taste” form; the class D personnel will be assigned the proper tools for the repair and will also be escorted by 3 security officers so as to avoid any misuse of the tools.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a mineral structure with an apparition akin to a tree or bush, consisting of a cylindrical base of approximately 0.8 meters in length with several branch-like protrusions that rise out of the base’s top. The surface of SCP-XXXX is brittle and grainy in all forms and attempts to break or perforate the surface have proven futile; thus, SCP-XXXX has proven to be impervious to any kind of physical damage. SCP-XXXX will alter its appearance every 6 months and these appearances have so far been limited to 5 different forms, each seemingly linked to the 5 senses of the human being; all forms have the same chance of being taken by SCP-XXXX and a recognizable pattern regarding the transformations has not been established. These transformations are the only type of movement SCP-XXXX partakes in, all occurring while the subject remains stationary in the location it was placed in. Whether SCP-XXXX is sentient or alive is unknown, as it does not react to external stimulus.

The forms SCP-XXXX takes only affect the appearance of the “branches” that protrude from the base and the texture of the surface will remain mostly consistent in all transformations, with only some minor changes that come with each transformation. These forms each present different events in which all individuals must do certain things so as to avoid triggering the effects of SCP-XXXX. These forms are listed below in the order of discovery and are named after each of the 5 main human senses.

1. Taste- The branches of SCP-XXXX will straighten to random directions, with each branch facing a different area. The tips of these branches, however, will bend down to face the base of SCP-XXXX. Any holes or depressions that were present on the surface of SCP-XXXX due to previous transformations rapidly vanish. The coloration will change to a bronze-like hue with an array of yellow and black stripes. Individuals interacting with SCP-XXXX must not have eaten any type of food in the past 24 hours and cannot consume any food 24 hours after last interacting with SCP-XXXX if triggering the effects that follow is unwanted.

2. Smell- The base of SCP-XXXX will produce several craters on the surface and the color of said surface will shift into urine yellow with brownish stripes. The spines will remain in the same pose that the previous form had left them in. These craters will then expel an orange gas that will vanish in its entirety after 20 seconds in the air. This fume should not be inhaled if triggering the effects that follow is unwanted.

3. Hearing- The branches of SCP-XXXX will coil up and the tip will open, revealing a hole that runs down inside the branch up to the base, similar to a tube. The color of the surface will stay equal to the previous form taken, save for the branches that will turn red; holes or depressions of any kind will vanish. SCP-XXXX will then produce a sound from the branches, reaching around 60-70 dB and being comparable to the sound of a didgeridoo. The sound should not be directly heard if triggering the effects that follow is unwanted.

4. Sight- The base of SCP-XXXX will become 0.3 meters thinner and all the branches will stretch upwards, making a column of sorts. The surface color will turn into a lightly opaque orange with undulated sand green stripes. The branches will produce several thorns that usually reach 20 centimeters in length (any length lower than this is normal). SCP-XXXX can only be observed through surveillance cameras or still images. No individual should directly observe SCP-XXXX if triggering the effects that follow is unwanted.

5. Touch- The branches covering SCP-XXXX will twist at random directions, with two branches being able to intertwine. The surface will produce an array of depressions and thorns of 20 centimeters (if the last form was “sight”, the thorns will merely stay where they were), and the surface color will turn into a bright red with silver stripes and spots. SCP-XXXX should not be physically interacted with in any form whatsoever if triggering the effects that follow is unwanted.

Any individual that failed to take the required actions akin to each form will instantly experience the effects. The effect is the same for all forms but the result of the effects are different for each individual. After interacting improperly with SCP-XXXX, the individual’s organic composition will be altered. This results in the subject in question either fusing with any material that is making contact with the individual (but never SCP-XXXX); this includes any type of matter in any state. Other parts of the effect include the production of new matter from the subject’s body, be it organic, inorganic, or both. This process is extremely painful but rapid, resulting in the quick death of the individual moments after the effects finish taking place (after 10-50 minutes). Both the fusions and the matter production can occur simultaneously. Despite each result being entirely different, there have been several moments where certain results have been repeated. These include:

  • The individual fusing with the floor and/or his own clothing
  • The individual bleeding from orifices with the blood rapidly fusing with the skin
  • The individual growing their fingernails rapidly to an impressive length
  • The individual growing thorny roots that pierce out of the skin
  • The individual having limbs petrify and shrink
  • The individual’s teeth roots stretching
  • The individual melting into a pool of blood and skin
  • The individual growing keratin horns out of unexpected places
  • The individual's skin turning into metal and rusting
