ITEM #: SCP-4639 [Icy Hot]

OBJECT CLASS: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Item SCP-4639 is to be kept in a locked, airtight enclosure made of aluminum-containing no trace of any organic materials or any materials composed of any amount of Carbon. The enclosure is to be filled with helium and under no circumstances contain nitrogen or carbon-containing gasses, such as CO2 or N2 are to enter the room. The enclosure entry door must lead into a short, 2-meter hallway ending in a secondary door. The hallway must also be airtight.

Personnel entering the enclosure must enter the hallway in vermiculite proximity suits equipped with a self-contained breathing apparatus and remain in the sealed hallway until all air has been drained from it and replaced with helium. SCP-4639 is to be handled only while wearing the proximity suit. Personnel must not stare directly at SCP-4639 for more than 12 minutes. When exiting the enclosure, personnel must seal the enclosure door before opening the hallway door and/or exiting.

Due to the ineffectiveness of infrared devices to monitor SCP-4639, authorized personnel are to enter the enclosure on a biweekly basis to manually inspect SCP-4639 and collect temperature readings. Any changes in the temperatures of SCP-4639 are to be immediately reported to Dr.██████.

Description: SCP-4639 is an acrylic on canvas painting depicting a blue to dark orange gradient with black smears where the two colors meet. SCP-4639 is indetectable by infrared cameras and expresses temperatures as low as -273C on the bottom left corner of the blue side of the painting and as high as 3456C on the top right corner of the orange side of the painting. The temperatures of SCP-4639 do not seem to radiate. The hot side of SCP-4639 appears to only affect carbon-containing materials, causing these materials to immediately combust upon direct contact regardless of the flammability of the material. The hot side seems to only affect gasses within a 3-meter radius in the same way and under the same conditions. The cold side of SCP-4629 appears to only affect solid and liquid materials and nitrogen-containing gasses within a 5-meter radius, causing these materials to reach temperatures of -273C immediately upon direct contact with the cold side of SCP-4639. Materials affected by the cold side of SCP-4639 will remain at this temperature indefinitely, even when direct and/or intense heat is applied.

Personnel that have maintained line of sight with SCP-4639 for extended periods of time have reported sudden and unexplained panic, anxiety, senses of doom, depression, paranoia, irrational speech and behavior, and thoughts of suicide. All affected persons have either felt uncomfortably cold or unbearably hot and have shivered or broke into sweats. Examination of affected persons, however, yielded no changes to actual body temperatures. These effects have been known to last anywhere from 2 minutes to 14 hours. Any affected personnel are to be examined and taken to [DATA EXPUNGED]

Lives lost to SCP-4639 via direct contact: 0
Lives lost to SCP-4639 via prolonged eye contact: ██

Additional Notes: SCP-4639 was discovered in Antarctica on ██/██/████ at approximately -81.908303, -107.119093, 43 meters under the ice contained in a 3-meter by 4-meter chunk of solidified nitrogen. It is thought that SCP-4639 created this chunk by freezing a pocket of nitrogen gas trapped in the ice down to its solid form.

Addendum: As of ██/██/████, studies have shown that the psychological and physical effects of SCP-4639 via prolonged eye contact are highly dependant on the portion of SCP-4639 being viewed. Additional effects have been observed after test subject █████ observed the black "smears" portion of SCP-4639 (see Document 4639-1). The following are all the confirmed effects of SCP-4639 matched to the appropriate portion viewed. Research has shown no effects when SCP-4639 is viewed through photographic or video media.
