SCP-XXXX instance in Brittany, France.
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
A closed 5km² security perimeter has been established around the building in which SCP-XXXX manifests. Due to its age and state of disrepair, regular maintenance of the building is conducted by trained personnel on a monthly basis. The security and maintenance personnel must be replaced every 6 months, to mitigate the gradual psychological effects of being around SCP-XXXX.
Due to the ability of SCP-XXXX to open new venues seemingly anywhere, due to alleged unpopularity of a venue, it is important to maintain Murder Mystery games on a regular basis. At least one game must be played every 5 years by D-Class personnel. The alleged new venue in China is not yet contained, but must be investigated immediately. If SCP-XXXX displays sustained ability to open new venues, or becomes expansionist with reasons beyond unpopularity or the destruction of a venue, the object class may be changed to Keter.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a phenomenom currently occuring inside a remote 19th century mansion in Brittany, France. Historically, SCP-XXXX manifested in a mansion in Kursk, Russia, but was allegedly destroyed in 1943 during the second world war. A new venue is supposedly being built in Lijiang, China. When a minimum of five (5) persons are present in the mansion, a game of 'Murder Mystery' begins. From this point, the persons inside the mansion are referred to as SCP-XXX-01, -02, and -03, and collectively known as 'participants'. The participants are heavily influenced by the memetic properties of SCP-XXXX, however have a degree of free will within the game. The memories of the participants is heavily affected, and they will not be aware that they are playing a game, even if briefed about it beforehand. This is not the case if they have read the Journal (See Addendum 4). The participants will become similar to characters or actors, acting with fake names, a fake personality and life story.
When the game begins, the mansion becomes empty. It is hypothesized that participants are taken to a pocket dimension, in which the game is played - it is plausible that the influence of SCP-XXXX is limited in this universe. It is impossible to contact participants once the game has begun - technology does indeed work, but contact (e.g. phone calls) between participants and external sources is impossible. Participants may not leave once a game has begun, and external players may not enter into a session that has already begun. When a game has begun, the anomalous properties of the physical site of SCP-XXXX are temporarily halted. Pets who are present within the mansion will also be part of the game, however will be very passive, and not interact with any of the participants. Pets will also not require any food or water for sustenance, however will interact with participants if engaged. For more information on pets, see Document 67-36-B.
The game always begins between 11PM and 3AM of the first night the mansion is inhabited. One of the participants, nicknamed 'the murderer', and referred to as SCP-XXXX-01, will be randomly selected to kill one or more participants. This is usually done with a convenient bladed weapon, such as a knife. For the next several days, the identity of the murderer will be investigated by the remaining participants. The ultimate goal of SCP-XXXX-01 is to eliminate and frame the other players.
SCP-XXXX-02 refers to one of the participants, which is selected at random, and nicknamed 'the sheriff'. The sheriff's task is to eliminate SCP-XXXX-01 instances. SCP-XXXX-02 always wields an old-fashioned revolver, usually a 1851 Colt Navy Revolver, which has anomalous properties. When alive, only SCP-XXXX-02 may shoot lethal rounds with the revolver; other participants appear to shoot blanks despite no visible mechanical change. When an instance of SCP-XXXX-02 dies, the first participant to pick up the revolver becomes SCP-XXXX-02, and is able to use the revolver. SCP-XXXX-01 may not become an instance of SCP-XXXX-02 at any time. SCP-XXXX-02 may also gift the task of sheriff to SCP-XXXX-03 instances, and become a SCP-XXXX-03 instance themselves. SCP-XXXX-03 instances cannot and will not harm SCP-XXXX-02 instances under any circumstances. Any damage caused by SCP-XXXX-02 to SCP-XXXX-01 and SCP-XXXX-03 instances is permanent, and cannot heal. Another anomalous property of the revolver is its seemingly infinite supply of ammunition, of which no reload is necessary.
SCP-XXXX-03 refers to the remaining participants of a Murder Mystery session. The task of SCP-XXX-03 instances is to investigate crime scenes, attempt to discover the identity of SCP-XXX-01, protect each other, and relay and information to the sheriff. Because of the lack of contact methods, one of the best strategies for participants is to keep together in groups. Instances of SCP-03 may effectively protect themselves. However, any damage caused to instances of SCP-01 by SCP-03 instances will be temporary, and will heal in time. The nature of SCP-XXXX-03 instances are also passive, and will not use deadly force against SCP-XXXX-01 instances. This means that SCP-XXXX-03 instances may not, for example, decapitate SCP-XXXX-01 instances, and then locate and inform the sheriff, when SCP-XXXX-01 is healing and unable to fight back.
The game terminates when SCP-XXXX-01 is eliminated by SCP-XXXX-02, or when SCP-XXXX-01 has eliminated all other participants. At this point, the winners are granted with gifts. If a winner loses the gift at any time, it is teleported near the person. If a winner breaks the gift at any time, a new copy appears near the person, and the broken copy vanishes. When a winner dies, their allocated gift disintegrates and vanishes. Winners cannot play another game of Murder Mystery, and are no longer affected by the effects of SCP-XXXX, bar the common psychological triggers of being around the mansion.
When SCP-XXXX-01 is eliminated, all remaining participants are returned to the real world. Participants who are killed will not return. They all retain memory of the event, though have all their memories returned as to prior the start of the game. SCP-XXXX-02 winners are gifted with a revolver coated in 24-karat gold. They are also gifted with a 24-karat gold sheriff 'star' badge. It has the anomalous property that only its lawful owner may lethally shoot it, and also has an infinite supply of ammunition. The revolver also has the ability to shoot incendiary rounds made of an unknown substance (possibly an unknown alloy of titanium). SCP-XXXX-03 winners are gifted with a 14-karat gold badge.
On the rarer event that SCP-XXXX-01 wins the game and all other participants, the participant will be gifted with a knife with an obsidian blade, and a diamond handle. The blade may become dull over time, however can periodically sharpen itself through anomalous means. Participants who are killed will also not return. SCP-XXXX-01 winners have permanent symptoms of irritability, anger and introversion which manifest themselves progressively within 5-10 years. They are also 50% more likely to commit murder.
To this date, 50 games have been played dating from 1871 to 2014. A log giving intricate details about each game, including the rules, events and strategies, is found on a large journal in the office of the mansion. The journal has anomalous properties - after each game, the journal appears to write in itself. Writing in the journal is impossible, as any writing vanishes shortly after the journal is closed.
The journal also has self-healing properties - when damaged in any way, it will heal itself. Removing the journal from the office is possible, although an identical copy will appear on the desk, effectively cloning itself.
SCP-XXXX has gradual psychological effects on subjects working in or around the mansion in which it manifests. For example, personnel working in maintenance have reported an increase in paranoia, nightmares and sleep paralysis after working for more than 6-8 months in the area affected. Personnel who have worked with SCP-XXXX, even if taking Amnestics, have an estimated 35% greater chance of being a victim of murder.
Addendum 1: Interview
Interviewed: James Hackney, D-Class, 45, SCP-XXXX-02 winner
Interviewer: Dr Hage
Foreword: Interview taken 2 days after winning a Murder Mystery session.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Hage: What do you remember about the game?
J. Hackney: You call that a game? Anyway, I was the sheriff. My goal was to eliminate the murderer. It took 4 days, I barely slept. I shot my friend, Charlie, in the face. It was horrifying.
Dr. Hage: When playing the game, did you have any memory of yourself? How did you feel?
J. Hackney: Nope. Looking back at it, we all gave ourself fake identities. Like we were in some sort of Hollywood film, you know? I was called John Belwick, a 28-year old mechanic. I sure as hell looked the same, but I couldn't for the life of me remember who I really was. I worked in retail all my life, never thought of being a mechanic.
Dr. Hage: What else do you remember about the game? Please be specific.
J. Hackney: Well, I had a revolver. One of those really old ones. It was pretty odd, I didn't have to reload it. No kidding. I was with the people I was introduced to before, but they all had different names. Karl, John, Max, you name it. Fake names, fake stories, and we all went along with it. As the days went on, everyone was more and more paranoid. People fed me information, I had to tell who was innocent and who was the murderer. It was so stressful. Eventually, the murderer, Charlie, was caught stabbing Emma in the chest. Her clothes were ripped and on the floor, so he must've raped her. Or something. Then without thinking, I shot him straight in the forehead.
Dr. Hage: I'm… very sorry. How do you feel now?
J. Hackney: Not the best. I guess I'm what you'd call traumatized. I've had a rough childhood, but this is pretty fucked up shit. Pardon my French. It'll take a long time to recover.
Dr. Hage: Indeed. Thank you for your time.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Subject was terminated at the end of the month. He seemed to progressively recover from the trauma of SCP-XXXX.
Addendum 2: Interview
Interviewed: Harry Marx, D-Class, 26, SCP-XXXX-03 winner
Interviewer: Dr. Hage
Foreword: Taken 2 days after winning a Murder Mystery session.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Hage: What do you remember about the game?
H. Marx: You call that a game?! Umm, well my goal was to help the sheriff, who was the guy with the revolver, to kill the murderer. I didn't really feel like myself, at all. I was given a fake name and all sorts. The murderer stabbed Emma, sorry, Emma's my girlfriend, he stabbed her throat right in front of me. I called the murderer and he shot him straight in the face. I've no idea how long I was in there.
Dr. Hage: How did you feel while playing the game?
H. Marx: Good question. Pardon my French, but absolute shit. I wasn't even myself, but I remember all of it. It's all like a really bad nightmare. If only I could snap my fingers and wake up.
Dr. Hage: And how do you feel now?
H. Marx: Better. I suppose. I wouldn't be surprised if this gave me PTSD or something, like my father had. He was in the military in Vietnam.
Dr. Hage: Thank you. No further questions.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Subject was terminated at the end of the month. He had severe trauma physical (bruises, cuts and one missing finger) and mental trauma from the game.
Adendum 3: Interview
Interviewed: Peter Smart, D-Class, 30, SCP-XXXX-01 winner
Interviewer: Dr. Hage
Foreword: Taken 2 days after winning a Murder Mystery session.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Hage: What do you remember about the game?
P. Smart: Oh gosh. Where to begin? For I think a whole week, I… killed everybody in all sorts of way. I couldn't control it! It felt like I was somebody else. In fact going by the name they gave me, I was definitely not under my conscientious control. I mean I was on death row for murder, but that was on a whole other level.
Dr. Hage: How did you feel while playing the game?
P. Smart: Increasingly stressed. I was worried that the others would find me. Eventually, they did on the last night. That was chaos… I had to eliminate one by one before they could get to the sheriff's mutilated corpse.
Dr. Hage: And how do you feel now?
P. Smart: Not my best. I feel angry, more than I did before. But I'm sure that'll heal in time.
Dr. Hage: Thank you, that'll be all.
P. Smart: My pleasure.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Subject was terminated at the end of the month. He was progressively aggressive, and stopped interaction with his peers for a few days before monthly termination

A GUIDE TO MURDER MYSTERY
Addendum 5: Discovery Log
SCP-XXXX was found in 1962, in Brittany, France by Foundation Agents, after reports that a group of teenagers had vanished after allegedly visiting and filming abandoned places for a Youtube blog. The channel has been subsequently shut down and relatives and friends questioned. A cover story has been written in the local media. The security perimeter was immediately set up, with a cover story of the area being used by the French and NATO military for field exercises.
