Item #: SCP-3278
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3278 is to be held within a 1-hectare, self-sustaining, reinforced glass and carbon fiber biodome at Biological Site-66 with a variety of its preferred flora such as Asclepias incarnata (Swamp Milkweed), Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bee Balm), and Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud). Temperatures must remain at a level comfortable to both SCP-3278 as well as the flora within its ecosystem, ideally between 33°C and 35°C. Due to SCP-3278’s ability to deploy instances of SCP-3278-1 into neighboring ecosystems, the biodome must be airtight and maintenance crews must service the building at least once a week to ensure that a containment breach does not occur. No fauna outside of SCP-3278 and SCP-3278-1 instances may inhabit SCP-3278’s enclosure unless authorized by the site director, as any exposure of outside fauna (including humans) for longer than 3 hours will cause SCP-3278 to enter an aggressive state.
Additionally, the containment area at Biological Site-66 must be installed with a custom system to dispense a gaseous pheromone inhibitor should SCP-3278 become agitated and enter an aggressive state. This pheromone inhibitor will disturb the connection between SCP-3278 and SCP-3278-1 instances, de-escalating any actively hostile situation. Foundation biological researchers and specially hired apiarists are the only personnel allowed to enter SCP-3278’s enclosure outside of testing, to bi-annually analyze the health of the SCP-3278 entity and any contained SCP-3278-1 instances. Security staff assigned to SCP-3278 are to have basic knowledge of the Apis genus and relevant behavioral indicators. Any staff assigned to SCP-3278 are armed with repurposed L83A1 smoke grenades filled with a gaseous endothermic substance which will lower the temperature of a 10 meter x 10 meter area, causing SCP-3278 and affected SCP-3278-1 instances to become lethargic. Once the endothermic substance and the pheromone inhibitors have been activated, SCP-3278 and SCP-3278-1 instances will be rendered comatose and safe to handle (primarily utilized for transportation). After recovering from a lethargic or comatose state, SCP-3278 becomes extremely dangerous for a period of 48 hours, actively targeting any fauna (including humans) it can reach within 3 kilometers, stinging it to death with SCP-3278-1 instances.
Description: SCP-3278 is an entity with innate control over all species of the genus Apis (honey bees) which utilizes a combination of telepathic and pheromone communication with Apis individuals (designated SCP-3278-1) to direct actions. SCP-3278 itself resides within an antique Dutch beekeeping suit dated to 1956 AD, which is filled with SCP-3278-1 instances surrounding SCP-3278 as they would a queen bee. SCP-3278 floats approximately 20 centimeters off the ground and stands 2 meters tall, kept aloft by psychic power rather than any lift generated by flying SCP-3278-1 instances within the suit itself. This, along with communication with SCP-3278-1 instances, appears to be the extent of its psychic powers. SCP-3278-1 instances exit and return to the main SCP-3278 entity through the foot and hand openings in the bee suit.
During the spring and summer seasons, a viscous, slightly golden “honey” substance will exude periodically from the facemask of SCP-3278. While SCP-3278-1 instances do collect pollen as they would normally, it is unknown whether or not the “honey” substance is actually produced from the collected pollen. Attempts to take samples have been unsuccessful as of 5/27/2018.
While the “honey” substance is being produced by SCP-3278 it is considered active and will attract Apis species within a 10km radius to itself. Species attracted will be assimilated upon reaching SCP-3278, and will be considered new instances of SCP-3278-1. Should hormone disruptors be deployed during this process, notably less Apis individuals (approximately 10 times less) will reach SCP-3278. Newly assimilated individuals will return to their hive of origin and terminate their previous queen as well as any previous larvae. Thus, SCP-3278 has the potential to cause tremendous damage to local ecosystems by assimilating their native Apis species, then moving on. While SCP-3278 is active, it will enter a hostile state which it cannot be removed from until it becomes inactive again, naturally. SCP-3278 becomes increasingly active during times when it has a low number (50,000 or lower) of SCP-3278-1 instances at its disposal, and on-site populations of Apis species are bred specifically to supply SCP-3278 if necessary.

More details as to the abilities and true nature of SCP-3278 and the SCP-3278-1 abilities are being drafted elsewhere, along with things such as incident reports and capture logs, but I wanted some input from the SCP community before I go too much further.
Thank you!
