Item #: SCP-4789
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4789 is contained at Site-20 in a locked transparent soundproof case with the only key secured in a safe in Security Room 64. The only time this key should be accessed and the case opened is when testing SCP-4789.
Description: SCP-4789 is a Sony Walkman TPS-L2, including headphones, that has a intricate painting of an oak tree encircling the front and back of the unit. SCP-4789 contains a unlabeled cassette tape which has been designated SCP-4789-A. SCP-4789 when used in conjunction with SCP-4789-A plays the song "After the Love Has Gone" by Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Upon any individual(s) hearing this song, their skin has runes of an as yet unknown language, believed to be Latin in origin, appear on it as well as a hallucination where a man in a grey suit1 appears in the room with the individual(s). Viewing this hallucination causes all individuals who have runes on them to begin to display signs of a severe panic attack. The hallucination cannot be interacted with, nor does it attempt to interact with any individuals who can see it. Subjects describe feeling an aura of disapproval from the hallucination towards them during all interaction with the hallucination. Upon removal of the tape, unplugging of the headphones or pushing of the pause or stop button this hallucination ceases to exist.
When containing any cassette tape other than SCP-4789-A, SCP-4789 acts as intended and does not display any anomalous properties, the same is true if SCP-4789-A is played in any other cassette player other than SCP-4789. SCP-4789 is powered through interaction with any individual upon which SCP-4789 has placed runes and must be provided with two AA batteries before commencing testing with any individual that has not previously interacted with SCP-4789.
SCP-4789 was obtained along with SCP-4789-A by Foundation agents on 02/17/1997 in Boring, Oregon from the former residence of Mary Nobody2. Foundation agents were dispatched after a 911 call was placed and a post was made online by the current residents of the property claiming they discovered a Walkman that "drove their son crazy". Upon arrival the Foundation agents delivered Class-C Amnestics to the family and officers on scene. The individual who was exposed to the anomalous effects of SCP-4789 was taken into custody along with SCP-4789 and SCP-4789-A, this individual was deemed SCP-4789-1 and was interviewed upon delivery to Site-20.
