Session #1 - 07/01/2020

T1: Dr. Jonah Verdante
C1: Leah Wander

T1: Hello, I am— yeah take a seat over there. I am Doctor Jonah, you must be Leah.

C1: Uh— yeah, nice to meet you.

T1: Now then, we have half an hour together, and I really don't know what we will be able to make of it but uh— I hope we can make something of it. I'd be glad to know whatever concerns you.

C1: Um… well the main thing is that I— I'm sorry, do you like— record these sessions?

T1: Not that I know of (laughs).

C1: Uh— alright… (smiles) I have been working on some new projects, got assigned to some and I don't know— I thought I'd be— gone by now…

T1: What do you mean by that?

C1: I uh— I messed up last time. Didn't think— Uhm… didn't do a good job, lost some frien— coworkers…

T1: I see… don't have to tell me what happened if you don't want to. It's fine either way.

C1: No— no, it's fine. I just… (laughs) you're right, I don't really want to talk about it.

T1: That's sometimes the case when you go to a therapist, it's normal.

C1: So… I don't— I don't really know what to talk about…

T1: I can ask you some questions if you'd like.

C1: O— ok.

T1: (checks notes) I see here that you requested to see a doctor. What were you feeling at the time, that made you consider to do this?

C1: Uh— (slight pause) like shit?

T1: (smiles) Alright, that's a start.

C1: I just— I don't really know. It's very hard for me to put it into words… when I joined the Foundation I was so— so happy. I was excited that I got to work on something that mattered… but, then it stopped— the excitement— I mean.

T1: Mhmm, it seems like you've gotten used to working here. You've only been with us for— a year? If I remember correctly?

C1: Yeah.

T1: This type of burnout normally takes longer to manifest.

C1: Uh—

T1: I don't mean that in a bad way, don't worry. Do continue.

C1: (brief pause) I— hmm— I don't feel good… about that. I want to be excited again, my work with SCP-███ and the research with John… I felt like— good about it— you know? I was at the top of my game… but then I fucked up— I fucked up once and everything's shit now (slight pause) I feel like such a brat, here I am, working on my dream job and I'm here complaining that I feel sad.

T1: This is much more common than you think.

C1: I don't even know why I'm here.

T1: I think you're here because you— these are new feelings you have never encountered, and you don't know how to deal with them. I can help you figure it out, if you'd have me.

C1: What— what do I do?

T1: I would love to be able to answer that right now.

C1: I was afraid you would say that (laughs).

T1: You mention that you think that you shouldn't feel this way— like— you're not entitled to. Why do you think this is?

C1: (10-second pause) Everything… isn't actually shit. I got assigned to new projects, someone told me that they are considering me for a new position. I don't— I don't understand why…

T1: I don't think you have to understand why. This is overall pretty good, you're right about that. I would— I'd recommend that you take a little bit of a break from your new duties, they seem to be stressing you out too much, instead of motivating you, does that make sense?

C1: I— uh, yeah… Hmm… I'll think about it.

T1: Well Leah, I think this has been a good first session. We have run out of time, I'm afraid.

C1: Oh—

T1: Time flies, right? For next time— uh— I want you to write down how you're feeling for the next few days. We'll go over them together, try and piece it all together. Does that sound good?

C1: I suppose so.

T1: See you next time, Leah.
