Item #: SCP-3982

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3982 is to be contained in a sealed 2m x 4m x 1.25m reinforced steel chamber and kept submerged in liquid nitrogen at all times. Temperature within the coolant chamber must not exceed -200°C except during testing. All security personnel assigned to the site must be equipped with X-███ "Cryo Cannon" liquid nitrogen launchers, with modernized M9-7 flamethrower weapons and M14 incendiary grenades on-site in case of a Class B containment breach. The containment chamber is to remain at Site ██ which has been specifically designed to prevent the spread of SCP-3982 (see Document 3982-1 for details).
Any requests to conduct testing on SCP-3982 must be O5 approved and requires two Level-4 personnel familiar with SCP-3982 present for the duration of the test.

Description: SCP-3982 is a highly contagious organism of unknown origins capable of absorbing biomass and rapidly shifting its physical form. Testing has revealed that this shape-shifting and assimilation is not supernatural, but is rather a result of an extremely complex and efficient biological composition in which all of its cells can quickly change form and function similar to human stem cells, as well as infect foreign cells with a copy of their genetic code. SCP-3982 actively seeks to infect and assimilate foreign biomass, but seems to prefer stealth and ambush to direct confrontation. Nonetheless, when cornered or attacked SCP-3982 is very aggressive and capable of complex and creative use of it's shape-shifting abilities for both offensive and defensive purposes (see Experiment Log 3982-1A).

When infecting a living target, SCP-3982 will non-lethally incapacitate the target and begin a brief "assimilation" period (3-6 minutes depending on SCP-3982's total biomass and the target's biomass) before SCP-3982 and the target separate. These operate as individual instances of SCP-3982 but have been observed to cooperate as well as recombine into a single instance. New instances of SCP-3982 have also shown some ability to communicate with the "original" instance, as well as retaining all of their host's memories (see Incident 3982-1A).

SCP-3982 initially came to Foundation attention after a search and rescue team was sent to Research Outpost ██ in ███ ██████ ██████ due to two weeks of radio silence following a lengthy snowstorm and record low temperatures. The search and rescue team discovered the Outpost had been severely damaged, with several deceased and frozen researchers located as well as a half-formed instance of SCP-3982 which was reported and drew Foundation attention. The search and rescue team was cleared for contamination and administered with a Class B amnesiac and the Foundation took control of the area. After a careful search, several documents and audio recordings were recovered, SCP-3982 was removed and the Research Outpost was destroyed with ████ ████████ incendiary weapons.

Addendum:

Memo to Site ██ Staff from Research Lead Dr. █████ ██████: We understand the risk that SCP-3982 represents for the world, there's a reason why we built Site ██ and the associated procedures. And we also understand why there have been so many of you who would rather just destroy the thing and get away from the paranoia surrounding Site ██. Unfortunately, we just can't do that. For one thing, what we've learned through experimentation on SCP-3982 has changed everything we thought we knew about biology. You can look at all the unkillable lizards and meat rooms you want, that's not going to help you cute cancer or grow new arms for amputees. This thing has a lot to teach us about the possibilities of carbon based life (and yes, SCP-3982 is carbon-based).

And secondly, we have absolutely no evidence that this is the only one of these things around. What if someone digs another one of these out of the ice somewhere in Canada, or one crawls out of a meteor? Having access to an instance of SCP-3982 in a controlled environment with the "detonate on-site warhead" button within easy reach is actually a lot safer than getting blindsided by an outbreak of these things and having to fight of thousands of shape-shifting aliens with no knowledge of their weaknesses.

I know it's not easy to work here, but it's for the good of mankind. We're going to test out some pocket-sized test kits and try and get those rolled out by the end of the month, hopefully this will decrease tensions around the staff while increasing security.

Stay on your toes and follow procedure.
-Dr. █████ ██████
