Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object class: keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept on a server at site-15 running a simulated version of the internet (IS-1a actual). Generators are to be kept at the ready in case of a powersurge, and have an assigned technician on standby at all times. Technicians may not carry equipment capable of accessing the internet while server maintenance is conducted. Should SCP-XXXX find out it is being trapped, protocol IS-4a is to immediately be enacted.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous instance of the popular website █████████, used to create what on the internet is called a meme. Attempts to take the website down has resulted in SCP-XXXX jumping to a different site with similar purpose.
SCP-XXXX will generate infohazardous memes spontaneously, designated SCP-XXXX-1. The Foundation currently believes that it is the origin of all such content. SCP-XXXX-1 contains a small part of its source code embedded within the pixels. These images will then be posted to various social media platforms using several sockpuppet and bot accounts. Subjects that view SCP-XXXX-1 feel a strong urge to save a copy of the image onto whatever device they are using, and spread it over the course of the next few days to weeks. Some of these accounts, designated SCP-XXXX-2 have been identified as ███████, █████ and ████. They have amassed a huge following and are regarded as the primary source of recreational memes. The Foundation have reached out to the media platforms where instances of SCP-XXXX-2 reside but have been unsuccessful in banning them (see addendum SCP-XXXX-A).
All instances of SCP-XXXX seem to be able to communicate with itself as long as internet access is provided and will continue to spread indefinitely. An individual that has been exposed to high levels of SCP-XXXX-1 is to be considered SCP-XXXX-3. When an individual reaches this state their mind have been deleted and replaced with the collective hive mind of SCP-XXXX. All instances of SCP-XXXX-3 are considered lost and are to be terminated whenever discovered.
Addendum SCP-XXXX-A:
The Foundation reached out to several social media sites that hosts anomalous accounts in an effort to have them terminated, with mixed results. The foundation has since ceased all termination attempts.
Addendum SCP-XXXX-B:
SCP-XXXX was discovered in 20██ on a website made for the purpose of creating memes. It came to the Foundations attention when reports were made about people suddenly and irrevocably stopped responding to stimulus. Amnestics were administered and MTF Gamma-5 (“Red Herrings”) were given special order to keep any reports of similar activity from reaching the public.
Eventually the source was tracked to ████████████.The website was promptly shut down. This did not stop the reports. It was discovered that SCP-XXXX had migrated to another server seconds before its deactivation.
SCP-XXXX was traced to the new site and transferred to a server at site-15, disconnected from the internet. During a unscheduled powersurge SCP-XXXX temporary lost power. As a consequence, all known SCP-XXXX-2 and SCP-XXXX-3 instances simultaneously began operating five times faster than previously reported. Within a few hours, a new anomalous website (SCP-XXXX-4) appeared. No domain name registrar reported having ever owned the web address. SCP-XXXX-4 is not indexable by any search engines and for twelve hours since its creation DNS lookups failed. Past this timeframe, the website appears to be functionally a copy of SCP-XXXX.
SCP-XXXX-4 was located and contained without issue, and uploaded to a subsimulation of IS-1a actual, called SIS-1b. It is crucial that additional SCP-XXXX-4 are not allowed to be created, as that would make the internet far too unpredictable and dangerous to use, as three copies of the entity would be strong enough to figure out it is not free. This would lead to additional SCP-XXXX-4 being created to replace the captured ones. This many SCP-XXXX-4 would be enough to infect the entire internet, and the cleanup would lead to a Lifted Veil event.
Addendum SCP-XXXX-C:
IS-4a: A containment breach is simulated using one of 200 (199) pre-recorded scenarios. Every scenario used is to be considered expired and is not to be used again. Common across all scenarios is that at some point, a port will open that SCP-XXXX can use to escape while the Foundation is busy containing the rest of the site. SCP-XXXX will emerge into SIS-1b while IS-1a actual is being rebooted. SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-4 are to be moved to IS-1a actual as soon as possible, since SIS-1b is not stable enough for two instances at the same time.
