Item #: SCP-4XXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Ten specimens of SCP-4XXX-1 are to be contained in an air-tight botanical containment unit which is to be kept at a temperate climate. No personnel are permitted to open this container at any time, outside of testing approved by any Level 3 researcher with 4XXX clearance. When specimens are to be moved for testing or transport, one personnel is to enter the habit while wearing a hazmat suit. SCP-4XXX-1 specimens should be placed in portable biohazard containers which are designed to prevent the escape of odors.
Locations found to support SCP-4XXX-1 specimens are to be destroyed by incineration delivered at a distance of no less than 3 kilometers from the area. These actions are to be attributed to forest fires.
Anyone who has detected the odor of SCP-4XXX-1 is considered to be lost.
Description: SCP-4XXX refers to two items. SCP-4XXX-1 is a previously undiscovered species of tropical plant that measure on average 4 centimeters tall and 3 centimeters wide. SCP-4XXX resemble members of the Rafflesia genus, although much smaller, and appear green in color.
SCP-4XXX-1 continuously exude an odor described as similar to coffee grounds which, when detected by humans, manifests agitates anomalous entities referred to as SCP-4XXX-2.
SCP-4XXX-2 instances resemble large arachnid like creatures which stand about 2 meters in height and have blue and red colored patterns across their carapace.
When a subject has detected the odor of SCP-4XXX-1, an instance of SCP-4XXX-2 will make itself visible to the subject when no other humans or cameras are observing it. The instance will then silently observe the subject until a time when another person begins to look over in their direction, or when a camera is about to be turned on. It is unknown how SCP-4XXX-2 instances can detect when these events are occurring and how they appear is not well understood.
As of 6/██/2016, SCP-4XXX-1 specimens have been found growing on several islands in the pacific ocean with temperate climates. All of these islands had little to no human occupation.
Addendum 4XXX.1: It has become evident that instances of SCP-4XXX-2 do not “manifest” when a human subject detects the odor of SCP-4XXX-1 as it has been shown that one instance of SCP-4XXX-2 is always present in the vicinity of one SCP-4XXX-1 speciman.
Experiment Log 4XXX.A-6: All tests were run in the same 7 meter by 7 meter by 9 meter testing room. In this particular test, a camera capable of capturing 360 degree footage was installed in the ceiling.
Test #: 4XXX.A-6
Objective: Observe SCP-4XXX-2 instance via video or photographic evidence.
Subject: D-2091
Description: SCP-4XXX-1 specimen was placed in the center of the testing room by containment staff and D-2091 was instructed to enter the room. D-2091 was equipped with a disposable camera. D-2091 was instructed to approach the SCP-4XXX-1 specimen and quickly noted it’s odor. After 2 minutes, a camera in the room was turned off and research staff turned to face away from the observation window.
AUDIO LOG - TEST #4XXX.A6
Dr. Boise: D-2091, please look around the room.
D-2091: Um, okay whatever you- FUCK!
D-2091 falls from his stance and begins hyper-ventilating on the floor.
D-2091: What the fuck is that?
Dr. Boise: Please describe what you see.
D-2091: I- I don’t know some kind of… big fucking spider.
Dr. Boise: Describe it please.
D-2091: Oh fuck.. Okay, it’s fucking huge. It’s taller than. I-It’s covered in red and blue, and-
D-2091 begins losing coherence and begins cursing quietly.
Dr. Boise: D-2091, what is it doing right now.
D-2091: It’s just fucking standing there! It hasn’t moved since I saw it! But it’s fucking eyes are following me! I know they are.
Dr. Boise: Please use the camera to take a photo of the entity.
D-2091 trembles for 21 seconds before composing himself and taking a photo of the SCP-4XXX-2 instance with the camera.
Dr. Boise: Report D-2091. How did the entity react to the camera flash?
D-2091: It didn’t doc. It just keeps fuckin watching me.
Dr. Boise: Okay. Place the camera on the floor near the door and stand by.
D-2091 slowly moves to the locked door of the testing chamber and places the camera on the floor in front of it.
D-2091: I swear to god doc, you need to get me out of this fucking ro-
The research team begins to turn around to the observation window. Once they did, no sign of D-2091 or the SCP-4XXX-2 entity were observed.
VIDEO LOG - TEST #4XXX.A6
00:00:00 - Camera is turned on 5 minutes prior to the start of the test.
00:02:21 - Containment team enters wearing hazmat suits. They push a cart with a botanical containment unit housing an SCP-4XXX-1 specimen. And truck it to the center of the room.
00:03:13 - Containment team finishes unloading the SCP-4XXX-1 specimen and begins the leave.
00:03:42 - Before the airlock is shut, a smear of light is seen coming from the door above the containment team as they pass through the hallway. Later analysis of this footage in slow motion reveals this to be an instance of SCP-4XXX-2.
00:03:43 - An instance of SCP-4XXX-2 is seen perched in the upper right, back corner of the room, remaining motionless.
00:05:00 - D-2091 enters through the airlock which shuts behind him.
00:05:42 - Before D-2091 is to approach the SCP-4XXX-1 specimen, D-2091 looks up at the observation window. The SCP-4XXX-2 instance moves at almost unobservable speed to a position under the window but below D-2091’s line of sight. As D-2091 looks down slightly and begins to turn, the SCP-4XXX-2 instance moves back to its original spot.
00:06:21 - Camera is turned off as research staff turn around to avoid observation of the test.
END LOG.
Comments: This test was revealing and has changed the way we’ve been thinking about SCP-4XXX.
Before we assumed smelling the aroma of SCP-4XXX-1 apparated beings via an anomalous cognito-hazard. But this doesn’t appear to be the case.
While the scent of SCP-4XXX-1 does not appear to be itself anomalous, the spiders are.It seems that they don’t just pop in and out of existence, but instead are masters at stealth and can move anomalously quickly.
It appears too that, while the spiders do try to avoid the sight of those who aren’t it’s target as well as recording equipment, if no option to avoid recording equipment exists, it will follow the SCP-4XXX-1 instance no matter what. This implies that SCP-4XXX-2 instances are always present where SCP-4XXX-1 instances are, just out of view. There are likely some waiting right in the facility where we have nine more of the plants locked up. I’ve been in there everyday for the past year, while these things have been watching my every move. It’s a frightening thought.
-Senior Researcher, Doctor Richard Boise
Incident 4XXX.1:
On 7/██/2019, instance of SCP-4XXX-1 were found to be growing in dense and secluded parts of the Amazon Rainforest. Containment procedures have been enacted, and burning of several large parts of the forest have been approved.
